First thing to get straight: the name lies about the size. The actual size of a 4x6 lumber board in the U.S. construction industry is 3 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. That difference is due to the standard milling process where the board is reduced to ensure smoothness, consistency, and dimensional stability. If you lay out a header or calculate a span off the nominal number, you’ll be off by half an inch each direction. That matters.
The wood itself is softwood run through a pressure cycle. Treated 4x6 lumber is softwood, typically Southern Yellow Pine, pressure-infused with preservatives to resist rot, fungi, and insects. Some yards run a Hemlock/Fir mix instead — both species take treatment well and both show up in 4x6 stock.
One thing nobody warns first-timers about: the weight. Two choices make or break a treated 4x6 job. Exposure rating, and grade. Get either wrong and you’ve either built something that rots in five years or overpaid for wood you didn’t need.
Exposure rating comes down to where the wood lives. Ground contact for anything buried or near soil. Above-ground for elevated framing that drains and dries. Ground contact treated lumber meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance and is an ideal choice for a variety of exterior projects including decks, fences, and retaining walls, suitable for above or below contact exterior projects. The chemistry has changed for the better. The 4x6 earns its keep across a wide range of work.
