How to Pick the Right Grade, Rating, and Length

The single most important decision with treated 2x6 isn’t the grade or the length. It’s matching the treatment rating to the exposure. Get that wrong, and the board rots out years early. Get it right, and pair it with the correct fasteners, and you’ve got framing that outlasts the workmanship that put it up.

Treated 2x6 is softwood — typically Southern Yellow Pine, pressure-infused with preservatives to resist rot, fungal decay, and termite attack, even when buried or in direct contact with the earth. The actual dimensions matter for layout: despite its nominal 2-by-6 label, the actual size is 1.5 by 5.5 inches, because lumber is milled, planed, and dried, which removes material from the original cut log. This distinction is essential for structural calculations, framing applications, and material planning.

Most treated 2x6 comes surfaced on four sides and can be painted or stained once it dries out. More on the drying issue below — it’s a bigger deal in Montana than most folks expect.

Treatment Ratings: Ground Contact Is the Call That Matters

This is where money gets wasted or saved. Wood is treated with different loadings of preservative for different applications. Labels will designate Above Ground, Ground Contact, or Ground Contact Heavy Duty, which refer to intended use.

Here’s the rule. Anything touching soil or staying wet needs Ground Contact. Treated to a Ground Contact retention level, boards are specifically designed to withstand constant moisture and soil exposure without rotting. In Montana, where spring snowmelt keeps the ground line saturated for weeks and freeze-thaw cycling never quits, Ground Contact is the safe default for fence posts, retaining walls, and anything close to grade. Above Ground rating is for lighter exterior use that drains and dries.

Go up a level for the heavy stuff. For multi-level structures or screened porches with roofs, posts may be required to be treated to AWPA UC4B — Ground Contact Heavy Duty. Check local building code during the permit process before construction.

Want to confirm what you’re buying? Read the tag. Reference to either AWPA U1 or ICC-ES ESR 1721 or ESR 1477 will indicate the product has been produced to accepted requirements and inspected. Modern preservatives have moved toward micronized copper azole (MCA) or similar preservatives that protect against fungal decay and termite attack.

Grades, Span, and the Sizes to Order

Grade drives strength. No. 1 Common has few knots and is suitable for framing and beams. No. 2 Common has some knots and is used in general construction. No. 3 Common has more knots and blemishes, often used for rough framing and temporary structures. Plenty of treated stock sells as a #1 & #2 mix, which ensures a balance of structural integrity and aesthetic quality — the strength of high-grade timber with a natural wood appearance.

Applications run the gamut. Treated 2x6 handles deck joists, beams, and ledger boards, and is building code approved for use in decking in above-ground or ground contact applications, plus sill plates, decks, docks, ramps and other outdoor applications. On the structural side, a 2x6 is commonly used in load-bearing walls to provide greater strength and insulation space, and roof rafters and trusses frequently use 2x6 boards, providing better load distribution for snow, wind, and weight-bearing capacity. That snow-load point is the one that matters at elevation in Montana — span and grade selection aren’t optional where the roof carries a winter’s worth of accumulation.

Span limits depend on species and spacing. For Southern Pine:

For load-bearing applications, always follow local building codes and consult an engineer if needed. Don’t treat that table as gospel against your snow load — verify it.

Fasteners and Installation — Where the Failures Happen

Treatment chemistry eats ordinary metal. This is non-negotiable. Fasteners should be hot-dipped galvanized meeting ASTM A153 or equally protected material. Connectors should be made from galvanized steel sheet conforming to ASTM A653 class G185. Fasteners not meeting or exceeding these requirements could result in premature failures of fasteners and degradation of treated wood. Stainless works too. Cheap zinc screws will rust through and stain your boards.

Nailing pattern: use two nails across a 2x4 and three across a 2x6. Drive nails at a slight angle toward each other. Use 3¼-inch nails on nominal decking and 3-inch nails for 5/4 decking. Pre-drill near ends to keep dense Southern Pine from splitting.

Every cut exposes untreated wood. Seal it. Liberally coat all cut ends, holes, or other intrusions into the wood with a suitable wood preservative product containing a minimum of 0.675% copper as oxine copper or 1% copper as copper naphthenate. When you set posts, orient supporting posts so the original factory-treated ends are in ground contact.

Now the Montana-specific headache: moisture. Treated lumber shows up heavy and wet. Treated wood is often wet when delivered. Let the wood air-dry before applying stains or sealers for the best finish. That moisture means shrinkage, so plan your gaps accordingly. If heavy and wet, separate deck boards no more than 1/16 inch, as some shrinkage will occur. If light and dry, separate boards about 1/4 inch to allow for swelling.

And the wood keeps moving long after install. Protection is required to maintain the wood’s appearance against weather. Sun and rain cycles cause stresses in lumber and result in swelling, shrinking, warping, and cracking. The fix is simple and cheap: apply an effective surface water repellent as soon as the project is finished, and reapply every year or two. In a climate that runs from -15°F winters to 80°F-plus summers, that yearly coat is what keeps treated boards from checking and cupping.
