How to Pick the Right Grade, Size, and Rating Before You Buy
Building MaterialsA treated 2x8 is the workhorse joist of residential deck framing. The nominal size of 2x8 lumber refers to its size before it has been dried and planed; the actual size after finishing measures approximately 1.5 inches thick by 7.25 inches wide. Call it a 2x8, but lay it out at 7.25 inches. Every span calculation, every blocking measurement, runs off the real number.
Here’s the one thing that matters most. Read the end tag and buy ground-contact stock for anything structural. For deck framing — joists, ledgers, beams, posts — you want UC4A. The AWPA classifies deck joists and ledger boards as UC4A applications because deck framing sits close to grade, has poor ventilation, and accumulates moisture. Then pair it with the right hardware, because the wrong fasteners are what kill decks before the wood ever rots.
Western Building Center’s treated 2x8 line runs #2 grade copper azole (CA-C) at a .15 retention, in 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16-foot lengths. That covers the bulk of deck joist work.
Pressure treatment isn’t a coating. It’s a process that forces wood preservatives into the wood, considered the best and most effective method to extend and preserve timber life. Inside the cylinder, an industrial vacuum pump removes air from the wood, then the cylinder is flooded with preservative solution and pressure forces the preservatives deep into the wood cells. That’s why treated wood holds up outdoors when bare framing lumber wouldn’t last a few seasons.
The arsenic-based stuff is long gone from residential work. Before December 31, 2003, nearly all residential pressure-treated Southern Pine used Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA). The problem: it contained arsenic. After the EPA announced a voluntary phase-out, the industry transitioned to new preservatives by January 2004. Today’s residential standard is Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), with Copper Azole (CA) as another common option. Both are copper-based and contain no arsenic. Micronized Copper Azole shows up too — MCA is a copper-based wood preservative used in pressure treated lumber allowing for residential installations above ground, ground contact, or freshwater contact.
Species depends on where you are. About 85% of pressure-treated lumber sold in the US is Southern Yellow Pine. SYP’s open grain structure absorbs preservative readily under pressure, and it grows close to treatment facilities in the Southeast. West of the Rockies, you’ll find Douglas Fir and Hem-Fir instead. Both work for deck framing; SYP is generally denser and stiffer. That matters for Montana builders running span tables — SYP numbers don’t transfer cleanly to a Doug Fir or Hem-Fir board. Use actual dimensions for all layout and span calculations, and confirm species off the tag.
One more thing about weight. Fresh from the treatment plant, boards carry considerably more water. Pressure treatment forces approximately 4 gallons into each cubic foot of wood. A 12-foot 2x8 fresh off the truck can weigh close to 30 lbs. Plan your handling and your fastening around green, heavy stock.
The end tag is the whole story. End tags are applied to every piece of lumber to denote the plant name and location, application and its abbreviation, the preservative name or its abbreviation, the retention level of the preservative retained in the wood indicated in pounds per cubic foot, and the trademark of the approved third-party inspection agency.
The Use Category tells you where a board belongs. The American Wood Protection Association’s Use Category system tells you how much preservative is in a board and where it’s rated for use. The UC designation appears on the end tag of every piece of treated lumber.

The trap is grabbing above-ground stock for framing. UC3B isn’t the right spec for structural framing. Check the tag before you buy. If it reads UC3B, it’s for fascia and trim — not joists. The board is rated for above-ground use only. Set it aside and find the UC4A stack.
Grade is the second call. The #2 grade meets code for deck joists and is the default at most lumberyards. For exposed beams where appearance matters, specify #1 or Select Structural.

Don’t overpay to hide a board. The #2 grade meets code for deck joists, and roughly 80% of residential framing in the US uses #2 lumber. Save the #1 and Select Structural for the beams people actually see — as a #1 Grade board, it offers a superior appearance with fewer and smaller knots compared to standard #2 grade lumber, making it the ideal choice for projects where both strength and aesthetics matter.
For a Southern Yellow Pine 2x8, here’s the working span at standard deck loads:

At 16-inch on-center spacing, a #2-grade 2x8 spans up to 11’2”. That covers most residential deck projects. Those figures assume typical residential numbers — live 40 psf plus dead 10 psf, total 50 psf, deflection L/360. Montana’s high-snow jurisdictions stack more load on top of that, so always verify with local building codes or span tables for final structural approval. When a run pushes past what a 2x8 carries, step up to a 2x10 rather than fight deflection.
Now the part that fails decks. The most common installation mistake is using the wrong fasteners. Modern ACQ treatment corrodes standard galvanized hardware. You need hot-dipped G185 galvanized or stainless steel. This isn’t optional caution — ACQ-treated wood is approximately 10 times more corrosive to standard galvanized fasteners than CCA was. The screws and hangers that held up a deck built in 1995 will rust out in modern lumber. Always use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners to prevent corrosion.
Every cut breaks the treatment envelope. To keep the integrity of the pressure treatment, coat all cuts and holes which expose untreated wood with an end-cut preservative before installation. That’s where rot starts on a Montana deck — an unsealed joist end sitting near grade through every freeze-thaw cycle.
Finishing comes later, after the water works its way out. Treated 2x8s benefit from finishing with paint or stain, allowing the lumber to dry (up to several weeks) after purchase before staining, then applying water-repellent sealer annually for decks. Or, in plain shop terms — for the longest lifespan, apply a high-quality water repellent or exterior stain once the wood is “dry to the touch” to minimize checking and warping.
Done right, it lasts. With proper installation and maintenance, treated 2x8 framing can last 40+ years.
What’s the actual size of a 2x8? A 2x8 measures 1.5 inches thick and 7.25 inches wide, not 2 by 8. The nominal size reflects the rough-cut dimensions before the lumber is dried and surfaced. Every piece of dimensional lumber works this way: a 2x4 is actually 1.5” × 3.5”, a 2x10 is 1.5” × 9.25”.

How far can a treated 2x8 span? At 16-inch on-center spacing, a #2-grade 2x8 spans up to 11’2” for Southern Yellow Pine under standard residential deck loads. Tighten to 12” on-center and it reaches about 12 feet; open up to 24” and it drops to roughly 9’4”. Snow-heavy jurisdictions add load, so confirm with the local building department before sizing a frame.

Do I have to seal the cut ends? Yes. To keep the integrity of the pressure treatment, coat all cuts and holes which expose untreated wood with an end-cut preservative before installation. The factory treatment doesn’t reach the core of the board, so every fresh cut exposes wood that’s no longer protected.
When should I jump to a 2x10? When the run outstrips the 2x8. A 2x8 covers most residential decks, but once a span passes what the table allows at your spacing and load — or you want a stiffer floor on a longer run — step up to the next size.
Can I paint or stain treated lumber? Yes, once it dries. Allow the lumber to dry (up to several weeks) after purchase before staining, then apply water-repellent sealer annually for decks. Green treated stock won’t hold a finish until the moisture works out.
