A Buyer's Guide for Decking, Roofs, and Exposed Ceilings

Boards run nominally 1.5 inches thick by 5.5 inches wide, milled with a tongue on one edge and a groove on the opposite edge to create a seamless surface when installed. The decking spans between rafters or trusses and does double duty — structure plus a finished face you can leave exposed.
Here’s the thing most buyers miss. This isn’t plain framing lumber. The product is intended to be installed with the V-Groove face exposed. The backside is a tight butt T&G. That V-groove side is your finished ceiling. The back gets covered. In theory it can be left as is for a floor, but often it’s finished over with a formal layer of subfloor and flooring, or sheathing and roofing.
Where does it go? Common applications for 2x6 roof decking include patio, foyer, porch, and outdoor living room ceilings. Roof decking, loft floors, exposed structural ceilings. One board, three jobs. And it pulls a little weight on the energy side — it brings an added insulation value of about 1.9 R.
One ordering note before anything else. Allow approximately 5 to 10 percent cutting waste for this product. Tongue-and-groove eats more on the ends than you’d expect.
The profile is the same across the board. What changes everything is the wood underneath.
Douglas Fir is the workhorse for exposed work. As one of the hardest and densest of the softwood species, Douglas Fir makes a practical addition to a home. Frequently used for loft flooring and roof decking, its straight grain and reddish-orange color provide eye-catching appeal. The span is where it earns its keep. With a higher structural value over other softwoods, Douglas Fir is able to span further — perfect for those who need longer lengths for exposed beams, exterior siding, building frames, or flooring.
For Montana snow country, the stability matters as much as the span. Douglas Fir is a great combination of strength and workability. You’ll get long spans and great load tables with it. It’s also very dimensionally stable and won’t bow, twist, or crook as much as some other wood species. And if you’re staining an exposed ceiling, Douglas Fir stains and finishes the best. You’ll be making an investment in this product, and you want it to look as good as possible. It takes stains and finishes extremely well, leaving a professional, polished look.
SPF / Lodgepole Pine-Engelmann Spruce is the budget play. Made from Lodgepole Pine/Engelmann Spruce from out west, it’s a construction-grade product that comes dried, V-edged, center-matched, and ready to finish in the paint or stain of your choice. The smart feature here is the dual-side grading. It is graded on two sides, allowing dual-purpose use as ceiling and floor decking without the hassle of sanding the floor side.
Pressure-treated is your call for anything touching weather or soil. Treated lumber has been treated with preservative chemicals to last longer than untreated wood, protecting wood fibers against structural degradation, decay fungi, termites, and other hazards. Look for ground-contact rating where it matters — 2x6 #2 T&G treated with MCA-C is suitable for structural framing and woodworking where moisture exposure is a concern, such as exterior framing, decks, sheds, and other outdoor projects, with ground-contact-rated treatment for durability in damp or soil-contact environments.
Redwood skips the chemicals entirely. Naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage, redwood eliminates the need for chemical treatments. Its natural oils provide built-in protection while highlighting rich color tones and grain patterns. For Montana’s wet-then-frozen swing, the milling helps too — a precision kerf cut on the underside relieves internal stress within the wood, significantly reducing the risk of warping, cupping, or twisting over time, even when exposed to fluctuating moisture and temperature conditions.
On grade: Select Structural and No. 1 carry the most load. No. 2 is the everyday standard. The Western Building Center stock list carries the #2 white wood decking in 12-foot and 16-foot lengths. Whatever you buy, get it dry. Kiln-dried lumber holds its shape; verify the moisture content before it goes up.

This is the safety-critical number. The span is the unsupported distance between rafters or joists, and you do not exceed it.
For a 2x6, the working range is modest. A simple span of 6 to 8 feet is easily achievable with 2x6. Simple spans up to 14 feet are achievable with 3x6 Select Dex — but always check with local designs, engineers, and load factors before installing. Under tighter, real-world conditions the number drops further. In many installations, 2x6 T&G boards span roughly 4 to 6 feet between supports, depending on species, grade, and load. Heavier snow loads or poorer species can reduce the span toward 4 feet.
That snow-load line is the whole story for Montana. Dead load and live load directly affect span. Higher snow areas shorten allowable spans. The state minimum ground snow load is 30 psf, but local values run far higher depending on elevation and exposure. Don’t lean on moderate-climate rules of thumb. Pull a site-specific number from the MSU snow load tool at snowload.montana.edu and check it against the span table for your exact species and grade.
Species sets the ceiling on that range. At 16-inch on-center spacing under moderate snow:

Pitch helps a little. Some tables provide separate columns for common pitches such as 4/12, 6/12, and 8/12. Higher pitches can influence how decking behaves under wind, gravity, and thermal effects. Steeper roofs generally read higher in the tables than low-slope.
Load assumptions matter when you read those tables. Residential roof decks typically assume a 20 psf live load and a small dead load contribution. If a higher live load is anticipated, such as for snow areas, spans will shorten accordingly.
What if your run is too long? Don’t fudge it. The span is the maximum unsupported length between supports. Do not exceed this length; if you exceed it, add intermediate supports such as rafters or blocking per table guidance. Or step up the lumber — for longer spans or more demanding roofs, builders often upgrade to 2x8 or 2x10 decking, or use engineered tongue-and-groove panels designed for greater span.
Tongue-and-groove punishes sloppy storage. Boards that go up at the wrong moisture content cup, gap, and shrink — and on an exposed ceiling, you stare at that mistake every day.
The rule comes straight from the millwork people. According to WWPA, to minimize dimensional change after installation, install tongue and groove at a moisture content that matches the local climate as closely as possible. If a region keeps wood at 8 to 13 percent moisture content annually, the ideal board is installed within that range, stored, stickered, and protected for a week to ten days prior to application.
Store it flat and dry. Prior to installation, all tongue and groove needs protection from direct sunlight, water saturation, snow, ice, dirt, and other elements. Ideally store it in an enclosed building such as a garage. It’s best to store it flat and off the ground with a vapor barrier so moisture isn’t absorbed through the bottom boards.
One counterintuitive piece — don’t wrap it airtight. If stored outside, protect it with a waterproof covering elevated in the center so water doesn’t pool on the cover. Don’t completely seal the bundle, as good air circulation is required to prevent blue stain or molding.
When you go to finish it, watch for mill glaze. On occasion the tongue and groove may have a mill glaze produced when the material runs through the planer. When that occurs, remove it by sanding prior to staining or clear-coating. And finish everything, ends included. With any unfinished interior wood, applying a quality finish to all surfaces including the ends is recommended. An interior finish protects the wood from moisture absorption and UV degradation.
A few install basics carry over from good practice: acclimate boards before they go up, leave room for seasonal movement, and use corrosion-resistant fasteners. Use the recommended nails or screws with the correct spacing. Avoid overdriving nails, which can cause decking to crack or warp.

Treated 2x6 with a ground-contact rating handles soil and damp exposure.
Can I buy it pre-finished? Generally no for the structural roof-decking products. These are sold as raw timber only. Pre-finishing sounds great in theory, but there’s a lot of jobsite work during installation that’s messy and rough on the product. Over the years it’s proven best to finish on site. Budget pine decking does come ready to take paint or stain.
Why pick Douglas Fir over pine or SPF? Three reasons stack up. Douglas Fir is a great combination of strength and workability — you get long spans and great load tables, and it’s very dimensionally stable, won’t bow, twist, or crook as much as other species. On top of that, it stains and finishes the best, taking stains and finishes extremely well for a professional, polished look. For a snow-load roof deck that’s also your finished ceiling, that combination is hard to beat.
