How to Pick the Right Species, Grade, and Length

A 1x6 tongue and groove board is nominal lumber that actually measures 3/4 inch by 5-1/2 inches, milled with an interlocking edge — a tongue on one side that seats into a groove on the next board. That nominal-versus-actual gap is where most buyers trip up. You order on the label, but you cover on the face. Stack height — the visible coverage — runs about 5 inches once the tongue is engaged, and you convert square footage to lineal feet using a factor of 2.4. A 1,000 square foot ceiling needs roughly 2,400 lineal feet. Miss that math and you’re short a bundle on a Saturday with the framing crew standing around.

The single decision that drives everything — cost, durability, how the job holds up over a decade of Montana winters — is matching species and grade to where the board’s going. Pine for heated interiors. Cedar, cypress, or thermally modified wood when moisture’s in play. Get that right first, then worry about the rest.

Species and Grade — Match the Wood to the Job

Grade describes appearance, not strength. Grades range from Select (clear, knot-free) to #2 Common (rustic, knotty). A knotty board carries the same load as a clear one — you’re paying for looks, not structure.

Pine is the workhorse for interiors. Lightweight, takes paint and stain without a fight, easy to nail and cut. #2 White Pine is lightweight and can be painted or stained with ease. Common interior grades you’ll see include #2 White Pine and SPIB “D” Grade Southern Yellow Pine, kiln-dried. Pine works outside too, but only if it’s sealed and maintained — it should be properly sealed, stained, or painted to protect it from moisture, UV, and temperature swings. Without treatment, it weathers over time and ongoing maintenance is required.

Cedar and cypress are the call when the board’s exposed to weather or sits in a damp space. Cypress is ideal for both interior and exterior installation — used for decking, siding, ceilings, floors, and moldings — and is naturally resistant to decay, harsh weather, and insects. That resistance isn’t a coating; it comes from the naturally occurring Cypressene oil found in the heartwood. Cypress runs NHLA #2 Common grade with a 5-1/4 inch stack height. Left alone, cypress will weather over time to a silvery-gray.

Thermally modified pine is the chemical-free option for indoor/outdoor duty. The wood is transformed using only heat and steam in an oxygen-free vacuum chamber, converting the sugars that would otherwise attract decay-causing organisms — the result retains the natural beauty of wood without harsh chemicals. It’s rated for both indoor and outdoor applications, suitable for siding, decking, and ceilings.

Most of these boards are reversible, which gives you two looks from one purchase. Tongue and groove pieces click into place, and the board is reversible with a V-joint in the center of one side. Pine commonly ships with a V-Joint on one face and a penny/nickel gap on the other.

Sizes, Coverage, and Calculating Your Order

Lengths typically run 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet, though not every species comes in every length — some pine grades come in 12-foot and 16-foot only. For a 16-foot board, figure 6.32 square feet of coverage per piece with an actual exposure of 4-3/4 inches.

Don’t order tight. Add roughly 5 to 10 percent waste for walls and 15 to 25 percent for gable ends depending on roof angle. The steeper the gable, the more you cut, the more you throw away.

If you can get end-matched boards, take them. End-matching lets boards connect securely at any point, not just over a stud or joist — which reduces the need to discard offcuts and maximizes every board. For ceilings that matters even more: end-matching eliminates the need for continuous framing to support the board ends, which is useful on vaulted ceilings or spaces with exposed beams.

A layout tip that separates clean jobs from sloppy ones — figure the math before the first nail. You don’t want to end up with a 2-inch strip at one end and a full board at the other. Add that leftover width to a full board and divide by two, so your starting and ending boards match.

Acclimation, Moisture, and Installation

This is where callbacks come from. In Montana, with dry interior winters and humid summer swings, skipping acclimation is how you get cupping and gapping six months after the job’s done.

Acclimate first. Acclimate inside with the heating or AC already running, stack with sticks or spacers between every layer in the room where it’ll be installed — 2 to 3 days normally. Push that longer in extremes: in a far more humid or far less humid area, give it 7 days or more. Hold the room between 60 and 80 degrees F and 30 to 50 percent relative humidity while the wood acclimates. The target moisture content matters: install at a moisture content matching the local climate as closely as possible — if the region keeps wood at 8 to 13 percent annually, install within that range, stored and stickered for a week to ten days first.

Store it right. Until installed, tongue and groove needs protection from sunlight, water saturation, snow, ice, and dirt — stored flat and off the ground with a vapor barrier so moisture isn’t absorbed through the bottom boards. And don’t shrink-wrap it tight — good air circulation is required to prevent blue stain or molding. That’s plain common sense in country where lumber left outside in winter comes out crooked in spring.

Seal before you hang it. Prime or stain both sides of the boards to prevent them from cupping later. For exterior work, prime the ends too. In wet rooms — kitchens, bathrooms, and porches — pre-seal or pre-prime front and back before installing, then apply at least 3 top coats after.

Fastening. Use at least 2-inch nails for 3/4-inch T&G — either 6d finishing nails or 15 to 16 gauge brads. The technique is blind nailing: insert the groove of the next board onto the tongue of the previous one, seat it fully, and nail at a 45-degree angle through the tongue to hide the nail. When boards fight you, tap them together using a scrap block. That sacrificial block saves the tongue from hammer damage. Drive fasteners about every 16 inches, hitting plywood, lath strips, or studs.

Leave room to move. Leave a 1/4-inch gap around the edges of the wall or ceiling. Wood moves across its width with humidity, and a board pinned tight to the trim on both ends has nowhere to go but up. Stagger your lengths, and use crooked or bowed pieces for the shorter cuts.

For substrate, the boards want something solid behind them. Studs should be 16 inches apart and the T&G should run perpendicular to them. Running the other direction? Install 1/2-inch plywood, 7/16-inch OSB, or 1x3 battens every 16 inches over the studs first.

The angled nail also goes through the thicker part of the board rather than just the tongue, fastening it more securely.

Should I finish the boards before or after installation? Finish both sides before you hang them. Priming or staining both sides prevents cupping later, and coating all sides before installation reduces humidity effects and helps disguise any gaps that appear when the wood eventually shrinks. For staining specifically, it’s easiest to apply the stain before installation.
