A switch or outlet cover plate does two jobs: it hides the box and wiring, and it keeps fingers off live components. Also known as wall plates or faceplates, these covers serve as protective enclosures for electrical switches, outlets, and wiring, concealing and safeguarding those components from accidental contact to minimize the risk of electric shock or fire. Picking the right one isn’t complicated, but getting it wrong means a plate that won’t sit flush, won’t mount, or leaves an ugly gap around the box.
Three things drive the choice. Match the plate opening to the device type. Get the gang count right. Then pick a size that fits both the box and the wall around it. Nail those three and the rest is just material and finish.
This is where most people trip up — buying a plate whose cutout doesn’t fit what’s actually in the box. There are a handful of device families, and each needs its matching opening.
Toggle is the traditional flip switch. Duplex covers the standard two-receptacle outlet. Duplex devices have two receptacles or toggle switches on a single mounting, and fit double 1-11/32” W x 1-1/8” H plate openings that are rounded on the sides and flat on top and bottom.
Then there’s the rectangular designer style. Decora is a newer style of device, and all Decora devices fit into the same shape opening — a large rectangle roughly 1.312” x 2.625”. Decora devices are alternately known as decorator, designer, rocker, paddle, flat, or wide switches. The term “Decora” is trademarked by Leviton, a major manufacturer of electrical devices.
GFCI outlets get their own mention because they look like a Decora device but with a button in the middle. GFCI receptacles are usually shaped like a Decora outlet with a reset button in the middle. They detect current leakage and break the circuit if it exceeds a certain level, and are required in locations near water sources. A standard Decora plate covers a GFCI fine.
On the outlet side, you’ve got options. Power outlets, or receptacles, come in many shapes including Decora, duplex, Despard, and round in various diameters, and are available in different amp ratings — typically 15A and 20A for most residential or commercial applications.

Gang count is just how many devices sit side by side in one box. One switch, one gang. Three switches, three gangs. Buy the wrong count and the plate won’t line up with the screws — simple as that.
Size is the second half of the decision. Standard fits most new work where the drywall is clean and cut tight. Step up to midsize or jumbo when you’ve got a problem to hide. When choosing covers, consider the dimensions of the electrical box and the switch or outlet’s shape and size, assess material options like plastic, metal, or wood weighing durability and maintenance, and make sure the configuration matches the wiring devices you’re installing.

Standard single-gang plates run 2.73”–2.94” wide, midsize 3.09”–3.15”, and jumbo 3.50” × 5.25”. Double-gang standard plates run 4.50”–4.75” wide with jumbo at 5.31” × 5.25”, three-gang standard 6.37”–6.56” wide, and four-gang standard 8.19” wide.
Material comes down to where the plate lives and how hard the room is on it.
Thermoplastic switch plates provide a lightweight, cost-effective option with good impact resistance and are preferred for hospital, industrial, and other high-abuse applications. A stainless steel switch plate offers durability, corrosion resistance, and a modern appearance. Nylon is the one to know for fire resistance — many nylon switch plates are designed to be self-extinguishing, meaning they resist combustion without an external ignition source. The plate itself never conducts: covers are crafted from non-conductive materials such as plastic, metal, or polycarbonate thermoplastic, selected for their ability to impede the flow of electricity, and metal covers maintain non-conductivity through insulating linings.
Outdoor is where Montana makes the call for you. Rain, snow, freeze-thaw, humidity — an unprotected exterior outlet doesn’t last. Outdoor outlets need covers to protect them from the elements, including rain, snow, or high humidity exposure, and these boxes provide watertight covers that protect the outlet even when a cord is plugged in. The code backs this up. Most local building codes require following the National Electrical Code, which says any receptacle exposed to potentially wet conditions and weather must have a cover that seals the interior of the box both when a cord is plugged in and when it isn’t.
Skip the cover and you’re asking for trouble. Outlets without a cover eventually fail from moisture and water exposure — they might short circuit or start an electrical fire, and if moisture reaches the wiring and metal parts inside, those parts begin to rust and corrode, causing a poor connection and intermittent performance.
For the box material itself: outdoor boxes consist of either PVC, which can withstand all kinds of weather and some impacts, or aluminum, which is impact-resistant and resistant to corrosion when exposed to weather. Pair that weatherproof cover with a GFCI outdoors. Installing an outdoor outlet calls for GFCI outlets in addition to covers — the GFCI design automatically trips to cut off electrical flow, preventing fire and the possibility of shock. And not just any GFCI: special GFCIs are necessary for outdoor installations, hardened against temperature fluctuations and slight exposures to moisture. That hardening matters in a climate that swings hard between seasons.
Installation is short and the safety step is non-negotiable. Over time covers can become discolored, cracked, or loose, compromising their ability to provide protection — so a replacement now and then is normal. Kill the power at the breaker first. Pull the old plate, clean the surface, set the new cover, and snug the screws. Don’t crank them down — overtightening cracks the plate, especially the rigid plastic ones. For a box that’s no longer in use, a blank cover does the job, but only after the wiring is properly terminated and capped with wire nuts. What’s the difference between a Decora plate and a standard toggle plate? A toggle plate has a small slot for a traditional flip switch. A Decora plate has a large rectangular opening — about 1.312” × 2.625” — for the wide rocker-style paddle. When should I use a jumbo or oversize plate? When you need to hide a problem. Oversize and jumbo plates cover ragged drywall cuts, mismatched paint lines, and damage around the box. A standard single-gang runs 2.73”–2.94” wide; a jumbo jumps to 3.50” × 5.25”, giving you the extra reach to bury those flaws.
Do I really need a special cover on an outdoor outlet? Yes. The NEC requires any receptacle exposed to wet conditions and weather to have a cover that seals the box when a cord is plugged in and when it isn’t. A while-in-use weatherproof cover keeps the outlet watertight even with a cord running to it. In a freeze-thaw climate, that’s the difference between an outlet that lasts and one that corrodes out.
What material should I pick for a high-traffic or shop space? Thermoplastic is the workhorse — lightweight, affordable, and good impact resistance, which is why it’s the pick for industrial and other high-abuse settings. If fire resistance is the priority, nylon plates are often self-extinguishing. For a clean modern look that shrugs off corrosion, stainless steel holds up.
Can I just put a blank plate over a box I’m not using? Yes, but finish the wiring first. A blank cover goes over an abandoned box only after the wiring is properly terminated and capped with wire nuts. Never cover live, loose conductors.
