Building MaterialsA torn screen job starts with two decisions. First, which mesh material fits the opening — fiberglass, aluminum, pet-resistant polyester, no-see-um fine mesh, or solar. Second, whether the damage warrants a patch, a re-screen, or a full frame replacement. Get those two right and the rest is just rolling spline into a channel.
Most homeowners overthink the first decision and skip the second. Repair patches handle small holes, while rescreening kits cover larger damage. And re-screening — putting fresh mesh in a frame that’s still straight — is an under-an-hour job with three tools. No professional install required.
This guide breaks down the mesh types, when to patch versus re-screen versus replace, and how the spline-and-roller method actually works.
Five mesh types cover nearly every window and door. Each trades visibility, toughness, and protection differently.
Fiberglass is the default. Standard fiberglass screening will not shrink, rust, or dent, and it’s resilient, easy to use, and long lasting — recommended for windows and doors. It’s flexible and won’t crease. Good visibility, good airflow. The catch: it gets brittle with age and tears easier than metal once it’s been through enough seasons.
Aluminum trades flexibility for durability. Aluminum is recognized for its long-life properties — tough and durable, with protective finishes that prevent corrosion, rust, or mildew. It holds shape and resists sagging, which makes it the pick for high-traffic openings and doors that get bumped. The downside is that aluminum can crease and dent where fiberglass would flex back.
Pet screen is the heavy hitter. It’s a vinyl-coated polyester that is pet and tear resistant while still protecting against insects. Western Building Center carries it in a 36x84” black vinyl-coated panel. Worth it for any door a dog leans on.
No-see-um fine mesh uses a tighter weave for the tiny stuff. The 20x20 fine mesh is proven effective in areas that need extra protection from tiny insects commonly called sand flies or “no-see-ums,” with heavy gauge construction that allows use in patio enclosures as well as windows and doors. Tighter weave means slightly less airflow. Fair trade if gnats and midges are getting through.
Solar screen is the heat-and-glare option. Energy-saving solar shade helps lower cooling costs and protects furniture, carpets, and draperies from fading — Solar Shade blocks out 75% of the sun’s heat and glare without sacrificing outward visibility. A heavier weave bumps that protection further. A 40x40 solar screen offers the highest level of protection from the sun’s rays. Put it on south- and west-facing glass that bakes through long summer daylight.

A Montana note on material choice: aluminum and pet-resistant polyester both shrug off the sag and degradation that catch up to aging fiberglass cycling through wide seasonal temperature swings. Older fiberglass goes brittle and tears easy. Spring — before bug season — is the practical window to look every screen over and re-mesh what’s failing.
Here’s the decision rule that saves time both directions.
Patch small damage. Adhesive or non-adhesive patch kits handle holes under about two inches. Overlap the patch at least half an inch past the tear. For a door or anywhere that takes abuse, a double-sided sandwich — patch on both faces — holds better than a single layer.
Re-screen when the frame is sound but the mesh is shot. If the frame is still straight and square and the only problem is torn or sagging mesh, pull the old material and roll in new. This is the most common fix. Western Building Center stocks the mesh by the panel — fiberglass charcoal in 24x84”, 36x84”, and 48x84”, bright aluminum in 24x84” and 30x84” — so you cut to the frame you’ve got.
Replace the whole screen when the frame itself has failed. Bent or warped rails, broken corners, or mesh that sags no matter how fresh the spline goes in — that’s a frame past saving. Mesh that won’t tension up means the material is permanently degraded. Screens pushing 15 to 20 years are usually replacement candidates anyway.
One middle path before you toss a frame: broken corners and worn hardware often swap out individually. Western Building Center carries screen clips, window screen clips in 5/16” mill, and a bronze 4-foot aluminum frame kit. A cracked corner doesn’t condemn the whole screen.
The job comes down to matching parts and rolling mesh into a channel. Here’s what matters.
Match the spline to the mesh. This is the single most common mistake. Use spline size .165 for aluminum mesh and .185 for fiberglass mesh. Wrong spline and the mesh either won’t seat or bows the frame.
Know your frame profile. Aluminum screen frames come in 5/16”, 3/8”, and 7/16” profiles at .020 gauge, in white and bronze or mill finishes, typically in 72” lengths. Western Building Center carries a 3/4 x 5/16 x 5-foot white frame kit and a bronze 4-foot aluminum frame kit. For square-cut frame pieces, 5/16” x 3/4” plastic corners join the rails.
The tool that does the work is a spline roller. The oval edge roller is used for inserting the screen into the frame, and the concave roller is used to set the spline. Western Building Center stocks a plastic screening tool. You also want a utility knife and a flathead screwdriver to lift old spline.
Hardware lives in kits. A typical frame accessory kit includes two of each: screen hangers, loop latches, pull tabs, side tension springs, crossbar connectors, and spring plungers, made of aluminum and plastic for 5/16” frames in black, white, and mill colors. Packaged window screen hardware comes with bail latches and screws plus jiffy hangers with nails.
The sequence:
When measuring for a replacement screen, measure width and height at three points each and use the smallest reading. Round to the nearest 1/16”. A frame that’s racked even slightly will read different across its span, and the small number is the one that fits.
What spline size do I need? Match it to the mesh. Use .165 spline for aluminum mesh and .185 for fiberglass mesh. Using the wrong size either leaves the mesh loose or forces it so tight the frame bows.
Can I just patch a torn screen instead of re-screening? For small holes under about two inches, yes — a patch kit works. Overlap the patch at least half an inch around the tear. For doors or high-traffic spots, a patch on both sides holds better. Larger tears or sagging mesh call for a full re-screen.
How do I know if the frame needs replacing instead of new mesh? If the frame is straight and the only problem is the mesh, re-screen it. Replace the whole screen when rails are bent or warped, corners are broken beyond a corner-piece swap, or fresh spline still leaves the mesh sagging. That last one means the material is permanently degraded.
Which mesh is best for a house with pets? Pet screen — a vinyl-coated polyester that resists claws and tears while still keeping insects out. It comes in a 14x10 mesh and stands up to abuse that would shred standard fiberglass.
What does solar screen actually do? It blocks roughly 75% of the sun’s heat and glare while keeping outward visibility, which lowers cooling costs and protects furniture, carpet, and drapes from fading. Heavier weaves push that protection higher. Best used on south- and west-facing windows.
How long does re-screening take? Once you’ve got mesh, the right spline, and a spline roller, a single screen runs under an hour. The work is removing old spline, rolling in new mesh, and trimming — straightforward once you’ve done one.
Can I reuse broken corner pieces or do I need a whole new screen? Corners, tabs, and clips usually replace individually. A cracked plastic corner or a worn latch doesn’t mean scrapping the screen — swap the part and re-tension the mesh if needed.
