How to Pick the Right Seal for Every Opening

Run a bead of caulk across a door bottom and the door won’t close right. Match the product to whether the part moves or stays put.
Why bother sealing at all? Sealing your home against air leakage can be one of the simplest upgrades to increase comfort and reduce energy bills. Sealing can also help with reducing excessive noise, small debris, and bug intrusion. Four problems, one fix — when you pick the right material for each spot.
The whole game is matching material type and size to the gap and the kind of movement at that location. Get it right, drafts stop. Get it wrong and the door binds, the window won’t slide, or the seal wears out by next winter. Here’s how the choices break down.
Each material trades off cost, durability, and how well it handles moisture and friction. The cheap stuff has its place — just not everywhere.
Felt and open-cell foams tend to be inexpensive, susceptible to weather, visible, and inefficient at blocking airflow. However, the ease of applying these materials may make them valuable in low-traffic areas. Step up a notch and vinyl, which is slightly more expensive, holds up well and resists moisture. For the long haul, metals — bronze, copper, stainless steel, and aluminum — last for years and are affordable. Metal weatherstripping can also provide a nice touch to older homes where vinyl might seem out of place.
One warning the felt crowd needs to hear: do not use it where exposed to moisture or where there is friction or abrasion. That rules out door bottoms and exterior thresholds in any climate that sees snow and freeze-thaw at the ground line. Vinyl and metal earn their keep there.

For anything that slides, pile is the answer. Woven pile weatherstripping is a low-friction seal ideal for windows and doors in sliding, folding, and compression applications. The density of the pile provides resistance to air, water, noise, and smoke, while polypropylene yarn is flexible enough to allow free movement. Pile comes in three flavors, and the choice hinges on wind and water exposure. Standard pile is generally used in applications subject to lower-level wind and compression. Finned pile is generally used in applications subject to higher-level wind as well as water and acoustics. Fringe pile is generally used where a basic barrier or sweep is required — such as a bug strip.
Quality pile carries two features that matter in a climate with hard sun and wide swings: silicone impregnated to repel water and UV stable. The yarn itself is extremely durable and highly resistant to abrasion, ozone, and biological attack.
For rubber and silicone seals more broadly, the common materials are EPDM rubber, silicone, neoprene, and PVC — combining flexibility and durability to maintain effective seals over long service life, with UV and ozone resistance being the traits that decide how they hold up outdoors.
This is where most jobs go sideways. Too thin and it won’t seal; too thick and the door fights you every time.
Measure first. Measure the widest part of the gap using a ruler or feeler gauge. Then match the thickness:

The location dictates the type as much as the gap dictates the size. Weatherstripping applied to a door bottom or threshold could drag on carpet or erode from foot traffic. Window sash weatherstripping must accommodate the sliding of panes — up and down, sideways, or out. The product should seal well when closed but allow the door or window to open freely.
Don’t over-spec the height. With pile especially, avoid using a higher weather seal pile than you need, because if it’s too high your panels might bind in the middle or require excessive force to operate. Same logic applies to bulb and foam — more compression isn’t better if it stops the door from latching.
For sliding pile, the base width is usually decided for you. The base width is generally predetermined by the groove dimension in the window or door. A 4.8mm base width is typically used in windows and the 6.9mm base in doors.
A lot of buyers aren’t sealing a whole house — they’re replacing one worn component. These come in standard configurations, and matching the mounting style is half the battle.
The categories sort out into door sweeps, thresholds, top-and-sides door seals, under-door seals, and window seals. Top-and-sides seals show up in several mounting styles: kerf/channel, screw-on, self-adhesive, and magnetic strips — the magnetic version made for steel doors. Under-door seals come in standard 36-inch configurations, including U-shape and L-shape screw-on versions, many with replaceable vinyl inserts so you swap the worn part instead of the whole assembly.

On the tape and strip side, the range runs across foam, vinyl, and rubber. Foam tapes come in a spread of profiles — 3/16 x 3/8, 1/4 x 1/2, 3/8 x 1/2, and 1/2 x 3/4 — in gray and brown, which lines up with the gap-size chart above. There’s V-flex strip in 7/8 x 17 ft, self-adhesive EPDM and rubber rolls in 10-foot lengths, a gasket weatherstrip at 1/2 x 17 ft, garage door weatherstrip in 18-foot black, and AC unit foam. EPDM auto tape comes in several sizes — 1/4 x 1/2, 3/8 x 1/2, and 3/8 x 3/4 — for spots that need rubber’s moisture resistance. Backer rod in 1/2 and 5/8-inch and a gray caulking cord round out the gap-filling side, and Quanex Q-Lon weatherstrip is available by the piece.

Cold-climate installers need to watch the thermometer. Ensure surfaces are clean and dry, and apply in temperatures above 20°F (-7°C). That’s a real constraint when a cold snap rolls through during the fall close-in rush — adhesive-backed products won’t grab on a frozen, frosty surface. Plan the work for a mild stretch.

Will self-adhesive weatherstripping stick to a metal door? Often not. Self-adhesive on pliable vinyl may not adhere to metal. For steel and aluminum doors, a screw-on kit or a magnetic strip seal made for steel doors is the more reliable choice.
