How to Match the Material to the Hazard

Rubber matting rolls are continuous lengths of rubber used for durable, cost-effective flooring, categorized by compound and thickness to suit specific hazards and traffic levels. Get those two decisions right — compound and thickness — and the matting does its job for years. Get them wrong and it swells, wears thin, or shifts underfoot.

The compound is the single decision that determines whether matting survives where it’s installed. Each rubber type handles a different enemy.

The trap people fall into: laying SBR where oil sits. SBR is the cheap, all-purpose option, but oil and fuel break it down. That’s where nitrile earns its keep.
For anything that lives outdoors in Montana — ramps, rooftop walkways, exposed entries — EPDM is the call. The intense summer sun, the freeze-thaw cycling, the color-fade from UV at elevation all chew through rubber that isn’t built for it. EPDM stays color-stable and holds up to the weather.
PVC is the other outdoor player worth knowing. A heavy-duty looped “spaghetti” PVC construction with UV resistance prevents discoloration, is reversible, offers anti-slip protection, and works as walkway or ground cover on construction and industrial sites — usable indoors and out, and brandable with logos or warning text. It’s a solid fit for construction, engineering, and industrial environments, indoor or outdoor.
Thickness drives durability and safety both. Spec too thin and it wears out under the load. Spec too thick for a light-traffic walkway and money’s wasted.

A barn aisle takes a different mat than a forklift lane. Stable and equestrian matting trends thicker because animals are hard on it — agricultural and stable matting combines high strength with resistance to animal waste and cleaning chemicals, with durability a key factor because animals can pull up and split the matting, so it has to withstand daily wear and tear.
Most of this material gets bought for one reason: keeping people on their feet. Prioritize R-rated slip resistance in the R10–R13 range, and use ribbed patterns to channel liquids or studded patterns for multi-directional grip.
The pattern isn’t cosmetic. Fine ribbed matting provides anti-slip properties in both wet and dry environments, and its construction lets it withstand deterioration from high-footfall applications. Studded works differently — the “coin” or studded design provides grip on almost all footwear types in wet and dry conditions, in a low-maintenance format.
Certifications worth looking for on a product spec sheet include DIN 51130 R-ratings, ASTM F1677 coefficient-of-friction numbers, and NFSI high-traction certification. One entrance product, for example, carries certified slip resistance to DIN 51130 R11 and ASTM 1677 at 0.6/0.6 dry/wet, with excellent drainage rated DIN 51130 V10. For hazard zones, high-visibility red and yellow and embedded safety messaging are options — safety messaging belongs on the floor where eyes focus, and warnings or instructions can be embedded right into the covering.
Anti-slip rolls come in grit grades too. One geomembrane system offers four grit options: Coarse, Fine, Extra Fine, or Super Fine. The grade maps to use: Coarse for industrial, Fine for commercial, Extra Fine for residential, Super Fine for barefoot.
The advantage of roll goods over pre-cut mats or tiles is flexibility — buy the length you need and trim the rest. Roll formats vary by product:
Cutting on site is straightforward on the lighter material. One adhesive-backed product installs in four steps: the floor must be clean and dry, measure to length with a cutting board beneath the cut line, use a safety knife to cut, position and smooth into place, then cut the corners at a 45-degree angle.

How it’s fixed down decides whether it stays put. Three approaches, depending on whether the install is temporary or permanent.
Prep comes first regardless of method. The substrate must be clean, dry, and level, and the rubber should be acclimatized by standing the roll upright for 24–48 hours. Skip the acclimatization and the mat fights you while it relaxes into shape.
Loose-lay leans on the material’s own weight. It’s suitable for commercial environments where the rubber’s weight provides stability, with edges secured using double-sided tape if necessary.
Adhesive is the permanent route. For permanent, heavy-duty applications, apply a rubber-compatible contact adhesive to both the floor and the matting, allow it to become tacky, then press firmly with a floor roller to remove air pockets.
Mechanical fasteners suit anti-slip covers over hard substrates. These install over wood, steel, and concrete — grating is not recommended. Outdoors, build in room to move: to compensate for expansion and contraction over outdoor substrates, use a drill bit 1/8” larger than recommended, and leave a small space — approximately 1/4 inch — between sheets when assembling them end to end. That expansion gap matters more here than in mild climates, where the temperature swing between a July afternoon and a January night is enormous.
For entrance mats, watch the transition height. To meet ADA requirements, there cannot be more than a ¼” height transition between the permanent floor and the mat, with tapered edges on surface-mounted versions.
Which rubber compound should go in a garage or workshop? Nitrile. It’s essential for resistance to oils, fuels, and chemicals — the conditions that break down general-purpose SBR. Where oil and fuel are present, SBR swells and degrades, so it’s the wrong material for a bay floor.
What thickness handles forklift traffic? The heavy grades. 15–22mm and up is built for forklift traffic and heavy impact areas. Lighter mats in that lane wear through fast.
What’s the best matting for an outdoor walkway in harsh sun and cold? EPDM rubber. It’s required for outdoor use because of its UV and weather resistance. UV-resistant PVC looped matting is another self-draining outdoor option. Both hold color and resist the breakdown that intense sun and freeze-thaw cycling cause.
Can these rolls be cut on site? Yes — that’s the main advantage of buying by the roll. Lighter material cuts with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. Clean and dry the floor, measure and cut with a board beneath the cut line, position and press into place, then trim the corners at 45 degrees.
Loose-lay or glue it down? Depends on permanence. Loose-lay works in commercial settings where the rubber’s weight holds it stable — secure edges with double-sided tape if needed. For a permanent, heavy-duty install, contact adhesive on both surfaces and a floor roller to press out air pockets is the way.
What slip rating should be specified? Prioritize R-rated slip resistance in the R10–R13 range. Ribbed patterns channel liquids away; studded and coin patterns give grip from any direction.
