How to Pick the Right One for the Job
Building MaterialsGrab the wrong filter and you’ve got a false sense of safety. That’s the whole ballgame here. A respirator only protects you against the hazard its filter is built to stop — and no matter how well made your respirator is, it can’t filter out hazards that it’s not designed for.

This guide is for the contractor, remodeler, or serious DIY builder who already owns a half- or full-face respirator and needs replacement media for a specific task. Sanding lead paint. Pulling mold. Spraying finish. Each job calls for a different answer.
The single decision that matters most: match the filter to the actual airborne hazard, then confirm it mates to your exact facepiece brand. Get those two things right and the rest is detail.
Two different tools for two different problems. People mix them up constantly.
Particulate filters trap solid and liquid particles — dust, mists, fumes, smoke, mold. Filters capture particles through the mechanisms of impaction, interception and diffusion, and these filters are enhanced with electrostatically charged fibers to help trap particulates within the filter media. What they don’t do is stop gases or vapors.
Gas and vapor cartridges work the opposite way. These cartridges utilize sorbent material to filter the gas or vapor molecules. Typically the sorbent is activated carbon. Different chemical treatments get added to the carbon to grab different gases. The catch: a cartridge fills up. When the cartridges reach their capacity, the gases or vapors start to come through the cartridge to the user. This is called “breakthrough.”
Combination cartridge/filters handle both. 3M Combination Cartridge/Filters filter particles, gases and vapors. This is the stack you want for spray painting, where you’re breathing vapor and mist at the same time. Here’s the part people miss — if your hazard contains both, you’d require a double-stacked or combination filter cartridge, manufactured with a P100 filter attached to a multi-gas charcoal cartridge. A bare gas cartridge won’t catch the mist on its own.
So before you buy anything, figure out what’s actually in the air. If your hazard is a dust, fiber, fume, or mist, the P100 filter should be your go to filter. If it’s solvent vapor, you need a chemical cartridge matched to the chemical. Both present? Combination.
Once you can read the letter-number code on a particulate filter, guessing stops.
The letter tells you oil resistance. Under 42 CFR part 84, N is for non-oil aerosols, R includes oil aerosols and may have a time use restriction when oil aerosols are present, and P includes oil aerosols used according to the manufacturer’s time use restrictions when oil aerosols are present.
The number tells you minimum efficiency — 95%, 99%, or 99.97% (that last one gets rounded to “100”). Put them together and NIOSH has nine classifications for particulate filters based on minimum filtration efficiency and the type of aerosol — N95, R95, P95, N99, R99, P99, N100, R100, and P100.
For the high-risk stuff, P100 is the standard. N95 blocks 95% of non-oil-based particulates; P100 blocks 99.97% of particulates, including oil-based ones. On a Montana job site that means silica, lead, asbestos, welding fumes, fiberglass. The universal color for the P100 filter is purple, and P100 filters provide protection from lead and asbestos particles, welding fumes and mists, fiberglass dust, and assorted other dusts, fibers, fumes, or mists.

Cartridge color coding is standardized across every brand, which makes the chemical side easier to read. NIOSH uses a classification system to identify the different types of contaminants these treated carbon grains will capture.

This standard coding is used across all manufacturers, ensuring that cartridges with the same color provide the same type of protection, regardless of brand.
Color coding crosses brands. The physical connection does not. This trips people up.
It’s essential to use cartridges specifically designed for your respirator. If you have a Moldex respirator, you must use Moldex cartridges. Cartridges are not interchangeable between brands. A 3M cartridge will not fit a Moldex mask, and vice versa. Same goes for Honeywell — Honeywell filters and cartridges use threaded “N-Series” or “S-Series” connections and should only be used with compatible Honeywell North or Honeywell reusable facepieces, because using mismatched brands can lead to improper fit and significantly compromise your respiratory protection.
3M alone runs more than one connection style. 3M’s Bayonet Connection makes a filter compatible with the 6000, 6500 and 7500 series facepieces. Their newer line works differently — the Secure Click filters are compatible with the FF-800 and HF-800 series; you simply align the connections and push until you hear a click. A bayonet filter won’t fit a Secure Click mask. Know your series before you buy.
Common replacement connections include the R6001 cartridge/filter, a Pro respirator cartridge (60923HA1), and a 3M OV/P95 replacement filter two-pack with prefilter — so check which mount your facepiece takes before matching any of them.
Installation is straightforward once you’ve got the right part. Align the connection and seat it — bayonet filters twist on, Secure Click filters push until they click. But a properly seated filter still doesn’t protect you if the mask leaks at your face. A real seal requires a fit test, and OSHA requires a clean-shaven face where the respirator contacts skin.
Builders think in tasks, not hazard categories. Here’s the translation.
Sanding, mold, lead paint, woodworking, fiberglass → P100. This is the bread-and-butter scenario. The 3M 7093 is built exactly for it — a NIOSH-approved P100 that provides at least 99.97% filtration efficiency against solids and liquid aerosols as well as oil-based particulates, intended for professional removal of mold, sanding/scraping of lead-based paints, woodworking and working with fiberglass insulation. Renovating older Montana homes pulls you straight into lead and mold territory, and it should be used in accordance with all applicable respiratory protection requirements including OSHA Lead Standard and US-EPA Guidelines for mold.
Grinding, welding, metal fab → P100. The Secure Click D3091 may be used in grinding, sanding and welding, including metal fumes produced from welding, brazing, cutting and other operations involving heating of metals. It also can be used for asbestos.
Solvents, paint vapors, gases → matched chemical cartridge. Black organic-vapor for most solvents. Pick the color that matches your contaminant.
Spray painting → combination stack. Vapor plus mist means you need both. A gas cartridge alone leaves the mist coming through.
One rule above all the task lists: as long as the amount of the hazard is below the threshold outlined by NIOSH, check your safety data sheet. The SDS for whatever you’re working with tells you what’s in the air. Read it before you buy.
A word on limits — P100 filters are not for every environment. The D3091 is not for use in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), sandblasting, or in environments that contain hazardous levels of organic vapors and/or acid gases. Particulate filters stop particles. They don’t stop gas.
When do I replace a particulate filter? When it gets hard to breathe through, or when it’s dirty or damaged. Replace 3M particulate filters when it becomes difficult to breathe comfortably (this varies from individual to individual) or when the filter becomes dirty or physical damage occurs. There’s a hard limit in oily air: if used in environments containing only oil aerosols, replace the filters after 40 hours of use or 30 days, whichever is first.
How do I know when a gas cartridge is used up? You can’t see it, which is the danger. Replace gas and vapor cartridges in accordance with your established change schedule or government regulation, or sooner if the contaminant can be detected inside the respirator by smell or taste. Smell or taste the contaminant — that’s breakthrough. If at any time you smell or taste the contaminant or irritation is detected, leave the contaminated area immediately and try adjusting your respirator and/or change the respirator cartridges. A smart habit: write the date on the cartridges when first removed from the pack.
How long do unopened cartridges last on the shelf? About five years. Provided they are stored unopened in the original packaging and away from direct sunlight, humidity and sources of high temperature, cartridges will last five years from manufacture date. Check the “use by” date on the package.
How should I store filters and cartridges between jobs? Clean, cool, dry, and sealed off from the air. Prior to first use and when not in use, your respirator, cartridges and filters should be kept clean, cool and dry, away from contaminated atmospheres to avoid deterioration. Ambient contamination can quietly use up a cartridge sitting in an open toolbox.
Can I use a gas cartridge by itself for spray painting? No. Spraying throws both vapor and fine mist. Filters trap solid and liquid particulates such as dust, soot, or lead; if you are working in an environment with both, such as spray painting, which involves both vapors and fine mists, you should use a combination cartridge or a filter/cartridge stack.
Will a P100 filter protect me from solvent fumes? No. A particulate filter stops particles only. For vapors you need a chemical cartridge — generally, you protect against particulate hazards with a filter and against gas and vapors with a cartridge.
