The filter you slide into your furnace does two jobs: it protects the HVAC equipment from dust and lint, and it cleans the air your family breathes. Pick the wrong one and you get problems on both ends — a filter too weak to catch what you care about, or one so dense it chokes airflow and strains the blower. The right filter comes down to three decisions: the efficiency rating, the exact size, and the thickness that sets how often you swap it.
Start with what’s printed on the filter already sitting in your system. The dimensions are stamped right on the cardboard frame, and if there’s no old filter to read, measure the slot itself. Get that number right first. Everything else is secondary.
Two rating systems show up on filter packaging, and they don’t always sit side by side. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the industry standard. MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating) is Filtrete’s own scale, weighted toward catching the smallest microparticles. Higher numbers on either scale mean finer filtration.
The practical translation is what matters at the counter. A basic MPR 300 filter handles dust and lint. Climb to MPR 1000 or 1085 and you’re into allergen defense territory. The higher tiers — MPR 1500, 1550, 1900, and up — move into bacteria, virus, and ultrafine particle capture.
Here’s the anchor most folks find useful: a 1500 MPR filter carries a MERV 12 rating with a 54% small particle capture rate. At that tier the filter pulls pet dander, smoke, bacteria, and up to 54% of airborne virus particles, and it still catches the big stuff — lint, pollen, and household dust.

Higher isn’t automatically better. The honest trade-off: a denser filter catches more, but it also fights airflow harder. Push the rating too high for your equipment and you restrict airflow and strain the heating and cooling system. That’s the mistake people make reaching for the biggest number on the shelf.
Match the tier to the household. A basic dust-and-lint filter does fine for budget HVAC protection with the least airflow resistance. Got pets or mild allergies? The mid-tier allergen defense filters around MPR 1000 pull pet dander, mold spores, and dust mite debris without choking the system. The high tiers — 1500 and up — earn their place where there’s serious respiratory need or wildfire smoke to deal with.
That smoke angle is real here. Western Montana valleys trap wildfire smoke for weeks at a stretch during summer fire season, and inversions pin it on the valley floor. And in a tight, sealed-up house through a long heating season, airborne particles concentrate indoors. Both are legitimate reasons to step up to a 1500-or-higher filter when the air outside turns bad — provided your system can move air through it.
What a filter won’t do is end dusting. Large particles like household dust settle out before they ever reach the filter, so the furniture still needs a rag.
Filters run from 1 inch up through the thicker 4-inch and 5-to-6-inch cabinet sizes. Thickness drives more than fit — it sets your replacement schedule. A 1-inch filter needs swapping at least every 90 days. The thicker 4-inch-and-up filters stretch to 90-, 180- or 365-day intervals, generally pulling at least once a year.
Common 1-inch sizes include 14x20x1, 16x20x1, 16x25x1, 20x20x1, and 20x25x1, while the thicker 4-inch builds run in 16x25x4 and 20x25x4. MERV 8, MERV 11, and MERV 13 pleated options sit alongside the 300, 1000, 1500, and 1550 MPR grades. Standard pleated furnace filters round out the range in MERV 8.
Beyond the standard pleated filter, two formats are worth knowing. Traditional pleated filters do more than fiberglass filters: they help protect the heating and cooling system and improve indoor air quality by trapping air particles.
Smart filters add a sensor. A Bluetooth-enabled sensor tracks filter life based on the air pressure from your home’s HVAC system, so you track life based on airflow and usage — not just time. It sends a replacement alert to your phone when the filter’s actually spent.
Refillable kits cut down on waste. The MPR 1550 refillable system pairs a reusable frame with collapsible filters: the frame lets you reuse 70% of the product, and the collapsible filters take up 75% less space in storage and disposal. The kit captures 42% more microparticles while creating 20% less waste, and the refills last up to 12 months. The MPR 1550 media runs at least 50% recycled content, verified by GreenCircle Certified. Refillable kits come in nominal 16x25x4 and 20x25x4 sizes fitting common cabinet brands.
Installation is simple but easy to botch. Pull all the plastic packaging and any paper insert, leave the cardboard frame intact, and slide it into the slot with the airflow arrow pointing toward the blower motor. Backwards, and the filter works against itself.
On timing: change 1-inch filters at least every 90 days and 4-inch or thicker filters at least once a year. Cut those intervals shorter when there’s reason to. Active construction or sanding in the house, pets shedding, smokers, or a fan running continuously all load a filter faster.

How often should I change a 1-inch filter? At least every 90 days for optimal performance. Replace sooner with pets, smokers, ongoing construction, or a continuously running fan.
Will a better filter stop me from dusting? No. Large particles like household dust settle onto furniture before air ever reaches the filter. A filter cleans circulating air — it doesn’t catch what’s already landed.
