Caps, Plugs, and Wyes Explained
Building MaterialsPVC DWV is the white rigid pipe that carries wastewater out and lets sewer gases vent up. DWV stands for Drain, Waste, and Vent. This system covers sanitary drain, waste and vent, sewer and storm drainage applications, and it’s intended for use in non-pressure applications where the operating temperature will not exceed 140°F. That last part matters. This is gravity-fed plumbing — not pressure pipe, not a hot water line.
Here’s the rule that trips people up. Never test with or transport/store compressed air or gas in PVC pipe or fittings. Doing so can result in explosive failures and cause severe injury or death. Water only. If you’re pressure-testing, you test with water, not air. No exceptions.
The material itself earns its place because it lasts. PVC is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. For a drainage system buried in Montana ground that freezes and thaws, that corrosion resistance is exactly what you want.
Start with size, because that’s where most buyers go wrong. PVC drainage pipe comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 1/2-inch to 5-inch for residential work. The trap is in how you measure it. For drainage in the U.S., the standard is white PVC pipe — measure the inside diameter, not the outside. A pipe called inch-and-a-half measures nearly two inches on the outside. Measure the OD and you’ll buy the wrong fitting every time.
Match the size to the fixture. Inch-and-a-half and 2-inch is what’s used for most sinks and showers, and 3-inch is used for most toilet connections. Larger sizes exist for mains and storm drainage. Charlotte Pipe runs PVC Schedule 40 DWV pipe from 1-1/4 inch all the way up to 16 inch. Streamline PVC DWV fittings are available in sizes ranging from 1-1/4 inch to 8 inch in diameter.
Wyes are the workhorse branch fitting, and they’re worth understanding. A wye branches a main line at a smooth angle instead of a sharp turn. The 45-degree wye features a hub x hub x hub connection and allows for a connection to be made in continuous pipeline and branch out to a different direction. The smooth angle is the whole point. When a plumber runs a snake down a wye, the cable follows the flow toward the trap instead of getting shoved the wrong direction. That’s why a wye beats a tee for future drain cleaning — more material, better fitting.
When you need to join different pipe sizes, reach for a reducing wye. A PVC DWV reducing wye features hub connections on all ends, designed to connect pipes of varying sizes in drain, waste, and vent systems, offering corrosion resistance, smooth flow, and durable performance. These come in combinations like 3”x3”x1-1/2”, 3”x3”x2”, and 4”x4”x2”. Two fixtures tying into one line? Use a double tee to connect multiple sinks to the same drainpipe. There’s also a double wye fitting which is comparable to the double tee.
Caps and plugs seal things off. A cap goes over a pipe end. A plug goes into a fitting opening. Cleanout plugs let you get back in later — the Style P106 cleanout plug is the kind you’ll see at a cleanout tee for future access. There are also test caps for checking the system before it goes live. The test cap C1 inserts into pipe, and the outside diameter test cap C2 inserts over pipe.

Three ways to connect, and the choice decides whether the joint is permanent or serviceable.
Solvent-weld is the permanent option. Solvent cement joints shall be made in a two-step process with primer conforming to ASTM F 656 and solvent cement conforming to ASTM D 2564. Clean the surfaces, prime, cement, seat the fitting fully. Once it sets, it’s a chemical weld — it isn’t coming apart. That’s what you want on buried lines and final connections.
Threaded caps and plugs leave you a way back in for cleaning or testing. The mistake here is over-cranking. Finger-tighten, then add roughly a half to three-quarter turn — no more. PVC threads crack if you gorilla them down. Use PTFE tape or pipe dope to seal. But watch your sealant: the system shall be protected from chemical agents, fire-stopping materials, thread sealant, plasticized-vinyl products or other aggressive chemical agents not compatible with PVC compounds. Wrong sealant attacks the plastic.
Push-fit skips the cement entirely. ConnecTite push-fit DWV fittings meet ASME A112.4.4 and IAPMO IGC 334. No primer, no glue, no cure time.
Whatever method you pick, the connection types have to match. H is Hub, Sp is Spigot (pipe O.D.), SJ is Slip Joint, MPT is Male Pipe Thread, and FPT is Female Pipe Thread. A hub fitting takes a pipe end. A spigot end goes into a hub. Mix these up and nothing seats right.
DWV work is code-regulated, and the standards are how you confirm a fitting belongs in the system. Pipe is manufactured from virgin rigid PVC vinyl compounds with a cell class of 12454 as identified in ASTM D 1784, conforming to ASTM D 1785 and ASTM D 2665, with injection molded PVC DWV fittings conforming to ASTM D 2665. Fabricated PVC DWV fittings conform to ASTM F 1866, and pipe and fittings conform to NSF International Standard 14. Fittings are also made to meet ASTM D3311 for laying lengths.
Two non-negotiables on every job. Installation shall conform to all applicable plumbing, fire, and building code requirements. And the system shall be hydrostatically tested after installation — with water, per the warning above.
Don’t mix materials blindly. Always verify compatibility between your pipe material (e.g., PVC vs. CPVC) and the selected fittings. PVC, CPVC, and ABS are different animals.
For anything going in the ground — which in Montana means below the frost line — there’s a separate standard. Buried pipe shall be installed in accordance with ASTM D 2321 and ASTM F 1668. Get the bedding and burial right and a DWV line will outlast the house.
