Picking the Right Reducer the First Time
Building MaterialsTwo fittings get confused at the counter more than any others in drain, waste, and vent work: the bushing and the adapter. Both reduce or transition pipe. But they do different jobs, and grabbing the wrong one means a second trip or a leak that shows up after the drywall’s hung.
Here’s the plain version. A bushing fits inside a larger pipe or fitting to reduce its internal diameter to match a smaller connecting pipe. It has a spigot (male) end that fits into a pipe and a hub (female) end that receives the end of another pipe. An adapter, on the other hand, transitions between connection types or materials — socket-to-thread, no-hub, cast iron, slip joint. One changes diameter. The other changes how you connect.
These are used in drain, waste, vent plumbing systems to connect pipes with different diameters, designed with different sized inlets and outlets to create a smooth transition and secure joint between pipe sizes. Those connection descriptions — Hub, Spigot, Slip Joint, Male Pipe Thread, Female Pipe Thread, Sewer & Drain, and Cast Iron — are the standard nomenclature for DWV fittings. This is virgin rigid PVC, and the grade is consistent across the manufacturers. The compounds conform to cell class 12454 as defined in ASTM D1784. The fittings meet ASTM D2665, F1498, and D3311, carry third-party certification for NSF Standard 14 compliance, and are certified to the Uniform Plumbing Code where applicable.
The temperature limits matter, especially in cold country. DWV bushings have an operating temperature range up to 140°F (60°C) and a minimum of 32°F (0°C) when used in water-based systems. That 32-degree floor is the reason DWV lines in unheated spaces need to stay sloped and protected — standing water in a freeze is a cracked fitting.
And the hard limit nobody should cross: this is not pressure pipe. PVC DWV fittings are not designed for hot water systems, and discharge temperatures should not exceed 140°F. The NDS adapter bushing spells out just how little pressure these handle — for use in non-pressurized underground sewer and drainage applications, maximum working pressure of 5 psi. Don’t put these on a supply line, and never test or use the products with compressed air or compressed gases. Drainage and venting only.
Where PVC shines is durability and corrosion resistance. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. They provide resistance against corrosion, weather exposure, underground soil chemistry, and damage from commonly handled waste chemicals and sewer gasses.
