Here’s the thing nobody tells you at the counter. “Plugs, spindles, and pegs” covers two completely different jobs that have nothing to do with each other. One is a wall plug — the nylon anchor that lets a screw grab into brick or concrete. The other is a woodworking peg or plug — hardwood used to join timber or hide a counterbored screw hole. Choosing between these hardware types depends on your application: wall plugs are for masonry or cavity-wall mounting, while pegs are for woodworking joinery.

Wall Plugs: Match the Plug to the Wall, Not the Screw

A wall plug solves a basic problem. A wall plug is a nylon, polyethylene, or PVC anchor that goes into a drilled hole in masonry, brick, concrete or other substrate so that a screw can grip and hold a fixing to the wall. Without the plug, the screw has nothing to grip — masonry is too hard for the screw thread to cut itself into, and most softer substrates don’t have enough thickness for a screw thread alone to support load. The plug bridges the gap: it converts a hard masonry surface into something a screw can anchor to.

The mechanism is simple. When the screw is driven into the plug, the screw threads cut into the inner bore of the plug; the plug body expands radially outward through the longitudinal slots, gripping the walls of the drilled hole. The expanded plug now anchors the screw, and the screw can carry load.

Now the part that costs people their fixings. Standard nylon plugs work in solid masonry. They fail in drywall. The single biggest cause of wall plug failure customers experience is using a standard nylon plug in plasterboard. Plasterboard has no compressive strength to grip the plug’s expansion force — the plug simply widens the hole and falls out.

So for drywall, you switch categories entirely. For plasterboard, avoid standard expansion plugs, which fail; instead, use specialist fixings like self-drill anchors for light loads, or toggle bolts and hollow wall anchors for heavier items. Loads scale with the fixing type — plasterboard anchors carry low loads, typically 2-30 kg static, for picture frames, light fittings, and small shelves in plasterboard.

Know where wall plugs stop

A standard nylon plug is a light-to-medium fastener, full stop. Wall plug (nylon expansion) load capacity runs light to medium — typically 5-50 kg per fixing — in solid brick, concrete, perforated brick (with frame plug), or aerated concrete (with Quattro frame plug). Best for everyday fixings — shelves, brackets, frames, electrical fittings, plumbing mounts.

Past that, step up. Above 50 kg per fixing, step up to screw anchors or sleeve anchors. Below 5 kg, a wall plug may be overkill — a hammer-drive plug or self-tapping concrete screw works for light fixtures. For the heavy stuff — machinery base plates, structural brackets — sleeve and wedge anchors handle high loads, typically 100-2,000 kg+ per fixing, in solid concrete only.

Substrate is the whole game here. For masonry and cavity walls, select your wall plug by substrate and weight. In a climate that cycles through repeated freeze-thaw, getting the right anchor class into solid concrete or brick matters more on exterior and below-grade fixings — the substrate has to actually hold the expansion force year after year.

The color chart and the one rule people break

That chart comes straight from the standard color system. Yellow is roughly 5 mm with a 5 mm drill for No. 6 to No. 8 screws; red is roughly 6 mm with a 6 mm drill for No. 8 to No. 10; brown is roughly 7 mm with a 7 mm drill for No. 10 to No. 14; and blue is roughly 10 mm with a 10 mm drill for No. 14 to No. 18. One caution — the color system is a convention, not a rigid standard. Some brands offer additional sizes and some use slightly different color-size mappings. Always confirm against the packaging before drilling.

Here’s the golden rule, and it’s the one DIYers blow constantly: drill size matches plug size, NOT screw size. A red plug needs a 6 mm drill regardless of whether the screw is No. 8 or No. 10. The most common DIY mistake is drilling a hole sized for the screw — the plug is then too loose to grip, and the fixing fails.

Two more things on the hole itself. Drill slightly deeper than the plug length to accommodate dust, and clear the hole before inserting. A dusty or oversized hole kills the grip — most failures trace back to substrate mismatch or hole-prep failure like an oversized hole or dust contamination.

Woodworking Pegs and Plugs: Joinery vs. Concealment

Switch trades. Wood pegs and plugs are a different conversation, and the two get conflated all the time. Pegs reinforce a joint. Plugs hide a screw. Different sizing rules for each.

Pegs do structural work. For woodworking, pegs are used to reinforce joints. Choose a hardwood species, such as oak or cherry, that is harder than the material you are joining. The logic is that the hole reshapes to the peg, not the other way around. To ensure a tight, secure fit, drill a hole roughly 1/16 inch smaller than your peg and taper the peg slightly. Using glue provides additional strength.

Plugs do cosmetic work — capping a counterbored screw hole flush. Flat head plugs have tapered sides to ensure a tight fit and are designed to fit flush in furniture and other woodworking applications. They’re typically used by woodworkers during furniture and other wood project assembly. The taper is what makes them forgiving. The bottom of each plug is slightly smaller than the diameter of the hole while the top is slightly larger. This design eliminates the risk of plugs not fitting due to hole size variances.

Cutting your own from matching stock? Use a plug cutter to create custom wooden plugs that match the project’s grain, typically sizing the plug about 0.005–0.010 inches larger than the counterbored hole for a proper glue fit.

One spot people get burned: don’t reach for a flat head plug on a floor. Flat head plugs are not recommended for flooring applications. For flooring, floor plugs which are specially designed for longevity are the right call. And for spots where you’d rather not see the plug at all, flat head plugs are also available in side grain for applications where aesthetics require the plugged hole to be less visible.

Plug, peg, and dowel types you’ll run into

The wood side of this category is deep. The common plug forms across the trade include flat head plugs, button plugs, round head plugs, side grain plugs, floor plugs, deck plugs, stair plugs, and bung plugs. Alongside those you’ll find dowel rods, fluted dowel pins, spiral dowel pins, square dowels, joinery biscuits, and shaker pegs.

Diameters run a wide spread — common stocked sizes include 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 3/4”, and 1”, plus metric 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm options. Species matter for color and hardness matching: birch, poplar, walnut, cherry, maple, white oak, red oak, pine, hickory, mahogany, beech, ash, and teak all show up in plug and dowel stock.
