Here’s the trade-off that matters before anything else. Wood lattice can be painted or stained to match surrounding trim. Plastic lattice is maintenance-free, rot-proof, and available in multiple colors but cannot be painted. Choose based on whether you want a paintable or maintenance-free solution. If matching your trim with a custom paint job is the priority, wood still wins. If you’d rather wash it with a hose and forget about it, vinyl wins. PVC and vinyl lattice are maintenance-free, will not rot or splinter, and are the better choice for permanently installed applications where longevity matters more than the natural wood look.
The function stays the same either way. The primary purpose of lattice, wood or vinyl, is to provide privacy while allowing for airflow and sunlight. That airflow is what makes it right for under a deck — it conceals the mess while letting the space breathe.
Two decisions drive the look: pattern and opening size. People mix these up constantly. They’re separate choices.
Pattern is the geometry. The classic is the diagonal diamond. The other is a square or linear grid — a decorative infill panel made from durable vinyl or HDPE plastic, designed to provide partial privacy while maintaining airflow and light. Unlike traditional lattice with its diamond pattern, the contemporary version uses straighter, more structured geometry for a cleaner look. Diagonal reads traditional. Square reads modern.
Opening size is the spacing of those gaps, and it controls how much you see through. Standard lattice patterns come in 1.5-inch and 3-inch diagonal or square grid patterns. Smaller 1.5-inch patterns provide more visual screening and a finer texture. Larger 3-inch patterns are more open, allow more light and airflow, and have a more rustic character. Want more privacy? Go smaller. One installer trick worth knowing: for more privacy, orient the lattice vertically to align the diagonal strips for denser coverage, or use a smaller pattern opening.
Now the part two panels can hide from you — construction grade. A hollow molded panel and a solid-core panel can look identical on the rack and behave nothing alike once they’re spanning an opening. Solid-core is the heavier-duty build. DuraShell is the strongest and thickest vinyl lattice in that line. The 3-inch diagonal pattern is produced with solid core slats that are 1-1/4 inches wide by 1/4 inch thick, with overall lattice thickness of 1/2 inch where the slats are chemically bonded together. That solid core and 3D construction is more durable and attractive than molded plastic or hollow PVC lattice.
The color-through detail matters for anything that takes abuse. Solid core slats have a smooth finish with color all the way through, so a scratch doesn’t show a different color underneath the way it does on a coated hollow panel.

On the sheet sizing: lattice panels come in 4-by-8-foot or 4-by-4-foot sheets and require cutting to fit the opening. Solid-core lines stretch further — standard sheet sizes run 4’×8’, 4’×6’, 16”×8’, 16”×6’, 12”×8’, and 12”×6’, with custom sizes available that cannot exceed 4’×10’.
The headliner application is deck and porch skirting. Homeowners and builders install vinyl lattice panels, known as skirting, around the base of a porch or other structure. The panels provide a finished appearance while hiding joists and posts. They also create a barrier so unwanted animals cannot set up their home in an area. The same panel solves a handful of other jobs. Lattice adds a decorative element to any porch, deck, crawl space, gazebo, or animal enclosure. Beyond that, it can conceal an under-deck area for storing outdoor products, be built as a privacy fence around an outdoor space, serve as a trellis for climbing plants, or be installed as an outdoor wall on a porch to section off parts of the space. Here’s the rule that prevents most failures. Lattice is not structural. It flexes. It sags if you treat it like it can carry itself. Thin and flexible on its own, it needs a supporting frame of 2x lumber or routed frame stock. The frame carries all structural load and the lattice itself is the infill panel only. Build the frame first. Then drop the panel in.
For that framing, you’ve got two trim pieces that do different jobs. U-channel runs the perimeter; H-channel ties sheets together. U-channels and H-channels come in all colors, though note that solid-core lines like this one do not offer posts, rails, gate accessories, or matching screws. A traditional wood-frame approach works fine too — the panel sits in a groove or rabbet cut into the frame members and is secured with trim molding or quarter round on both faces.
Support spacing and fasteners are where attention pays off. Frame it close enough that the panel can’t bow, and run your screws often enough that wind and snow loads can’t work an edge loose. On a perimeter-framed skirting panel, position it on the upright post about 1 inch from the edge, place a 2-inch screw at the top corner and sink it through the lattice into the post, then position a screw every 6 to 8 inches around the entire panel. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners every time — stainless steel, hot-dipped galvanized, or coated fasteners prevent corrosion and staining. Through freeze-thaw and snow exposure, plain steel bleeds rust streaks down your skirting within a season.
Cutting vinyl is simple if you use the right blade and let the material do what it wants. Lattice panels can be trimmed to size with a circular saw or jigsaw. Use a fine-tooth blade to prevent splintering on wood lattice and chipping on plastic lattice. When you run a circular saw, cut with a specialized vinyl cutting blade and set the blade depth at 1/8-inch deeper than the thickness of the lattice. Clamp it down first — lay the lattice over a sheet of plywood across two sawhorses and clamp it down with C-clamps so it doesn’t chatter.
One Montana-specific point that’s easy to skip: thermal movement. Vinyl expands and contracts across the swing from summer heat to deep winter cold, and a panel locked tight with no room to move will buckle or crack. Install panels using U-channels for framing or H-channels to connect multiple sheets, and always allow for thermal expansion by leaving small gaps or using appropriate fasteners. Channel systems handle this naturally — the panel floats in the groove rather than getting pinned.
Can vinyl lattice be painted to match my trim? Generally no. Plastic lattice is maintenance-free, rot-proof, and available in multiple colors but cannot be painted. If a paintable finish is the priority, wood lattice is the material that takes paint or stain. The vinyl approach is to pick the factory color you want and skip paint entirely.
What’s the difference between hollow and solid-core vinyl lattice? Both can look the same on the shelf, but solid-core is the stronger build. Solid core and 3D construction is more durable and attractive than molded plastic or hollow PVC lattice.
