How to Pick the Right Grade for the Job
Building MaterialsHardboard is a high-density panel made from wood fibers compressed under heat and pressure. It’s manufactured by compressing exploded wood fibers under extreme heat and pressure, reaching densities of 800 to 1,000 kg/m³ — outperforming particle board in stiffness and dimensional stability, yet running up to 40% cheaper than plywood and 25% cheaper than MDF. It’s non-structural. Nobody frames a wall with it. But for cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, shop wall linings, and tool organization, it earns its keep.

The whole buying decision comes down to two things: standard versus tempered, and — if you’re going the pegboard route — picking a thickness that won’t sag the day you load it up. Get either one wrong and you end up with a wavy panel and pegs pulling loose.
Both grades start the same way. The difference is what happens after pressing.
Standard hardboard is a wood fiber building panel with a back surface characterized by a fine, wire screen texture, available in thicknesses of 3.2mm and 4.8mm. It’s intended for dry area, interior use. It has some moisture resistance, but here’s the honest truth — standard hardboard has some moisture resistance, but it’s not waterproof.
Tempered is the workhorse. Standard perforated hardboard is made of wood fibers, usually with the addition of resin, and tempered by coating with a thin layer of linseed oil and baking at a high temperature to polymerize the oil. This provides more water and impact resistance, hardness, rigidity and tensile strength. The numbers back it up — tempered hardboard absorbs up to 40% less water than its untreated counterpart, making it suitable for slightly humid environments.
That moisture story is the reason tempered matters in this part of the world. A Montana garage swings from bone-dry winter heat to spring snowmelt humidity. A basement shop or a shed sees the same. Standard hardboard will warp and buckle in those conditions — hardboard will bend and warp with age and in the presence of moisture, and will sag under heavy weight unless secured to even weight distribution among several mounting points. For anything that’ll see damp or a knock, tempered is the smarter buy.
For a genuinely wet room, neither one is your answer. For high-humidity environments like bathrooms, consider moisture-resistant MDF as an alternative.

Pegboard is just tempered hardboard with holes punched in it. Perforated hardboard is tempered hardboard which is pre-drilled with evenly spaced holes. The holes accept pegs or hooks to support various items, used for purposes such as tool boards in workshops. “Peg-Board” is an expired trademark first used by the Masonite Corporation in 1962, now often used as a generic term for perforated storage boards. Standard spacing is one inch on center.
Thickness is where people go wrong. Thicker 3/16” pegboard holds hooks more securely and supports heavier loads than 1/8” panels. The breakdown: for garage workshops with power tools, 3/16” is the better choice. For lighter applications like craft storage, 1/8” works fine. The thicker 1/4-inch board runs the larger 1/4-inch holes for sturdier hooks; the 1/8-inch board uses the smaller 3/16-inch holes.
Now the part the home-center displays don’t tell you — what hardboard pegboard can actually hold. Typical hardboard pegboard holds about 50 pounds across a whole 4x8 sheet, and individual pegs hold only a few pounds each. Push past that and heavier individual loads bend the pegboard between supports, eventually deforming the board permanently and pulling pegs out of round.
So be realistic about what goes on the wall. Screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, small clamps are well within hardboard pegboard. But the heavy stuff doesn’t belong there — hand planes, large clamps, and heavy circular saws are too heavy for hardboard pegboard. Cordless tools are a coin flip: cordless drills and impact drivers at 4 to 7 pounds are borderline on hardboard pegboard. Long flat items create their own problem — levels, squares, and other long flat items work, but the long lever arm stresses individual pegs. For the heavy and awkward gear, a metal pegboard or a stud-anchored holder is the right call.
Standard hardboard goes where it stays dry and out of sight. Furniture and joinery — backs for furniture, cupboards, vanity tables and mirrors; shelves, drawer bottoms; and display bases for screen printing, lettering, shop fitting and notice boards. Uniform thickness in the 1.5 to 4mm range prevents rattles and ensures a flush fit, critical for both residential and commercial cases. It also serves as floor underlayment.
Tempered handles the rougher duty. Interior lining of timber or metal framed walls and ceilings in workshops, garages, and wet areas; cabinet construction, industrial shelving and work bench surfacing; door skins for moisture areas and semi-protected exterior locations; surfacing of concrete formwork; and floor surfacing. Pegboard rounds out the list — garage, workshop, and shed organization, plus closet and craft zones.
One thing to keep straight: this is finish and storage material, not structure. Hardboard offers an economical choice for non-structural components — keep it off load-bearing and high-traffic structural work.
Most buckled walls trace back to a skipped step on day one. Hardboard moves with the moisture in the room, so let it settle before you fasten it. Fillet stack panels and leave for at least 48 hours in the room where they will be installed. This matters double in Montana — winter furnace heat dries panels right out, and a board installed cold and damp will shrink and oil-can once the heat comes on.
For pegboard, you need air behind the board or the hook tips have nowhere to go. Mount furring strips, typically 1/4” to 1/2” thick, to your wall first, then attach the pegboard over them. The space between the wall and pegboard allows hooks to fit through the holes. Secure the pegboard with screws at regular intervals for stability. Loading anything with weight to it? For heavier equipment, ensure the board is securely fastened to wall studs for maximum load capacity.
Leave a hair of room between panels. A field note worth following: leaving even 1/16 to 1/8-inch spacing between panels keeps the wall flat and prevents the wavy expansion that gives big-box pegboard its bad name. The board needs somewhere to go when it grows.
Cutting is straightforward. The fine, densely bonded wood fiber structure ensures excellent machining and working properties using normal woodworking equipment or hand tools. A fine-tooth blade leaves the cleanest edge.
For finishing, prime first. Hardboard accepts paint well due to its smooth, dense surface. Apply a primer before painting for best results. Tempered hardboard may require light sanding before priming to improve paint adhesion. That light scuff on tempered board knocks down the oil-cured surface so the primer grabs.
