How to Match the Tool and Fastener to the Job

These tools handle tasks like upholstery, insulation, and general construction. Get the staple size wrong and you’ll either jam the tool or fire staples that won’t grip. Pick correctly and the work moves fast.
Here’s the rule that solves most problems: when fastening to wood, the staple should be twice as long as the thickness of the material being attached. If you’re stapling thin materials like fabric, the staple should be 4 mm longer than the thickness of the material being stapled.
Three power types, three jobs. Match the tool to your volume and how hard the material is.
Manual is the workhorse for light-duty and precision work. Operated solely by hand pressure, manual staplers are cost-effective for light to moderate use. The catch is fatigue. Sustained high-volume use causes hand fatigue. For hobbies or crafting where you spend more time arranging than firing, manual is fine — you won’t be firing a lot of staples over and over again, because you’ll be spending time preparing and arranging your materials carefully before you fasten them.
Electric and cordless models take the strain out of indoor volume work. Electric machines require just a gentle squeeze to operate and offer significant power and speed at a lower cost. They are ideal for jobs like soundproofing, putting up boards, and mild repair work.
Pneumatic is for the heavy stuff. Pneumatic staple guns are often used for heavy-duty jobs such as stapling hardwood flooring or roofing material, or in construction work. This type of staple is powered by compressed air, which drives the staple into the surface. These staple guns are quick to operate and particularly accurate to use, and need to be connected to a compressor. They are also capable of fixing longer staples, which makes them ideal for professional and industrial use.
Hammer tackers cover ground fast where looks don’t matter. Instead of a trigger, they rely on a hammering-type motion by the user, with the momentum of the person’s arm driving in the staple. They’re great for applications where a lot of ground needs to be covered and coverage is more important than accuracy or aesthetics — house wrap and roofing paper being the obvious calls. Staple selection is where most jobs go sideways. Wrong size jams the tool or fails to hold, and a staple fired at material it can’t penetrate becomes a hazard — staples fired at a material they can’t penetrate may ricochet and end up hurting you or someone nearby.
Leg length is the first number. Crown width is the second. The T50 series is the common heavy-duty standard, and WBC stocks Arrow T50 staples across the full leg-length range — 1/4”, 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2”, and 9/16”. The critical move is matching staples to the tool: it’s important to get the right type for the job. Hammer tackers and staple guns have a wide range of staple sizes they can accommodate, which may be specially designed by the staple gun manufacturer.
On gauge: the lower the gauge, the thicker the staple. Heavy wire runs roughly 10–16 gauge; fine wire sits around 20–22 gauge. Heavy-duty staples may feature particularly thick gauge wire. This helps to hold wood, insulation, and sheet materials in place.

For Montana work, the 3/8” and 9/16” rows carry the load — house wrap and roof underlayment fastening is constant in new construction here. And that brings up corrosion.
Indoor staples rust outdoors. Simple as that. Outdoor furniture and framing are subject to moisture. Select staples that resist corrosion for jobs that must endure varying weather conditions. Reach for stainless or galvanized on anything that sees wet — house wrap, porch screens, weather stripping, fencing. With the freeze-thaw cycling these layers take through a Montana winter, corrosion-resistant fasteners are the difference between a clean job and a callback. The tool itself benefits from the same thinking — chrome-plated steel bodies resist rust on the gun.
Even a manual stapler fires fast enough to do real damage. The cardinal rule before you touch a jam or reload: disconnect the air and remove fasteners — or for electric units, unplug and set the safety lock.
Loading depends on the design. Staplers may be rear- or bottom-loading types. To load a rear-loading staple gun, push the rod at the back of the gun and pull it out. Put the staples in and reinsert the rod. Electric staplers tend to be bottom-loading types. To load one, unplug the gun and put the safety lock on the trigger. Press the magazine release button to the rear of the tool. Then load the staples upside-down.

Check that you have the correct staples for your staple gun, and consider the task. The T50 series is a widely used heavy-duty standard, but always confirm crown width and series against the tool.
What does the gauge number mean? It’s wire thickness, and it runs backward from what you’d expect. The lower the gauge, the thicker the staple. Heavy wire (roughly 10–16 gauge) holds wood, insulation, and sheet goods; fine wire (around 20–22 gauge) suits lighter work.

How do I clear a jam without getting hurt? Kill the power first. Disconnect the air or unplug, set the safety lock, and remove the fasteners before you go near the exit. With cords and hoses disconnected, check for and clear jams. Some tools make this easier — anti-jam exits let you clear without tools at all.
