How to Match Fastener, Size, and Finish to the Job
Building MaterialsThe single decision that makes or breaks a fastening job isn’t the brand on the box. It’s matching the fastener type, leg length, and finish to the material and the moisture it’ll see. Get that right and you avoid jams, split trim, weak holds, and rust streaks bleeding down siding two winters later. Get it wrong and you’re pulling fasteners out of cracked molding.

Here’s the plain version. Collated nails and staples come in distinct types — brad nails, pin nails, finish nails, and staples — each with a gauge and head built for a specific job. The lighter the gauge number, the heavier the fastener. Pick the type for the application, the length for the material thickness, and the finish for the exposure. That’s the whole game.
Brad nails are the workhorse of trim work. These are small 18-gauge nails up to 2 inches long, used for general repairs, trim and molding, finish carpentry, flooring, and picture framing. Because they’re thinner in cross section, they’re less likely to split decorative molding and leave a very small hole. That tiny 1/8-inch head makes the nail less visible in wood — which is exactly what you want on case molding, base molding, window casing, and cabinets.
Pin nails go smaller still. At 23-gauge and headless, they’re the most delicate fastener in the lineup — built for fine trim and detail work where the hole has to disappear entirely. They run in short lengths from 3/8 inch up to 1 inch.
Finish nails are the heavier option, in 15- or 16-gauge, when a brad won’t hold enough. More steel means more holding power for trim that takes stress.
Staples carry load differently. Electro-galvanized steel staples handle light-duty to heavy-duty jobs and are made for attaching insulation, window screening, upholstering, carpet padding, and fence wiring. The flat crown spreads the hold across sheet goods and fabric instead of pinpointing it like a nail.

On the brad side, common lengths cover the full range of trim work. Western Building Center carries Stinger collated nails in 2000-count packs and Stinger staple packs in 7/8-inch and 1-1/4-inch. The Arrow brad nail line runs in 2”, 1-1/2”, 1-1/4”, 1”, 3/4”, and 5/8” lengths, plus a 9/16-inch PowerShot brad. Pin nails come in 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8”, 13/16”, and 1” lengths in 1000-count.
Length is where most people go wrong. Too long and the fastener punches through or stands proud. Too short and it won’t hold. The general nail rule: length should run roughly three times the thickness of the material you’re fastening down.
Staples have their own rule. Aim for 3/16 to 1/4 inch of the staple to penetrate the base material — and you can push that to about 3/8 inch in softwoods. If the staple stands away from the surface, step down to a shorter leg length. A stand-away staple means the leg bottomed out before the crown seated. Shorter leg fixes it.
T50-type staples run from 1/4 inch up to 9/16 inch leg length. Crown width follows the material: narrow crowns for delicate fabric and light insulation, wider crowns up to 9/16 inch for thicker or rigid sheet goods. Point type matters on the longer staples too. Chisel points drive straight and penetrate softwoods; divergent points twist for better holding power in hardwoods.
This is the part Montana builders can’t skip. Freeze-thaw cycling and spring snowmelt punish anything that holds moisture, and a rusting fastener telegraphs straight through finish work and siding.
Match the finish to the exposure:
For Montana cold-climate builds, the practical breakdown is straightforward. Housewrap and insulation stapling calls for galvanized wide-crown staples that hold sheet goods against wind and weather. Exterior and high-moisture work calls for stainless 304 or 316. And bare steel stays where it belongs — dry, interior, out of the weather.
A fastener only works in the tool it was built for. Confirm collation and gauge before you buy bulk, or you’ll be clearing jams instead of working.
T50-type staples use a 34-degree collation angle. Verify your gun is rated for it — a T20 or T60 staple will jam or misfire in a T50 tool. Pneumatic brad nailers typically run between 60 and 100 PSI, and 18-gauge brad nailers — manual, electric, or pneumatic — drive the 5/8-inch through 2-inch brads.
Two habits save material every time: test on scrap first, and keep fasteners back from the material edge to avoid splitting. Bulk packs run from 1,000 up to 5,000 count, so dialing in the setting before you commit to the real piece pays off fast.
What’s the difference between a brad nail and a pin nail? Gauge and head. A brad nail is 18-gauge with a small head around 1/8 inch and runs up to 2 inches long — strong enough for trim, casing, and cabinets while still leaving a small hole. A pin nail is 23-gauge and headless, the most delicate option, used for fine trim where the hole has to be invisible. Brads hold better; pins hide better.
How long should a staple be? Long enough that 3/16 to 1/4 inch of the leg penetrates the base material — up to about 3/8 inch in softwoods. If the staple stands away from the surface instead of seating flush, the leg is too long for that material. Step down to the next shorter leg length.
Galvanized or stainless for outdoor work in Montana? Galvanized handles damp and general outdoor projects with good rust resistance. For high-moisture exposure where rust staining can’t be tolerated, go stainless — 304 or 316, with 316 offering the highest corrosion resistance. Bare steel stays indoors and dry; it corrodes quickly once it sees moisture.
