A Buyer's Guide for Outdoor, Structural, and Irrigation Work
Building MaterialsGalvanized pipe is carbon steel with a zinc coating. That’s the whole story in one sentence. The zinc layer forms a physical and electrochemical barrier between the steel and the surrounding environment, which is exactly what you want when a pipe lives outdoors, underground, or anywhere moisture and freeze-thaw take turns beating on it.
Here’s the honest framing. Galvanized earns its keep on fence posts, handrails, irrigation lines, and structural framing. It’s no longer the default for interior potable water — copper and PEX took that job decades ago, and for good reason. Match the schedule, the size, and the thread system to the actual job, and galvanized pipe will outlast most of the people who install it. Get any of those three wrong, and you’ve bought yourself a leak.
The protection is sacrificial. The hot-dipping process gives the steel a zinc layer that rusts away before any of the steel underneath is affected. Scratch it, ding it, drag it across a gravel yard — the coating still protects the exposed steel around the damage. That’s the difference between galvanized and plain painted steel.
The coating itself comes from a real metallurgical bond, not a spray. The prepared pipes are immersed in a bath of molten zinc maintained at approximately 450°C and remain submerged for 5 to 15 minutes, and during immersion a metallurgical reaction occurs between the iron in the steel and the molten zinc, forming zinc-iron alloy layers. That bonded layer is why service life runs so long in the right application.
Service life is where you need to pay attention, because the numbers swing wildly by use:

A galvanized steel pipe can last well over 100 years, depending on the amount of corrosion exposure. But that’s the structural-and-outdoor figure. In plumbing service, you get strong pipes that often last 25 to 40 years, thanks to a zinc coating that helps prevent rust. The trouble starts in hot water and aggressive water chemistry — over time the zinc coating wears away, especially in hot water systems or areas with high oxygen, chloride, or sulfate ions, which leads to faster rusting and corrosion. Once that happens, the steel underneath starts to rust quickly, which can cause leaks, blockages, and even pipe failure.
For Montana outdoor work — fence posts that face snowmelt at the ground line, handrails that ride through freeze-thaw, gates and structural framing exposed to weather — the long-life column is the one that applies. That corrosion resistance is the entire reason galvanized still shows up on ranch and irrigation jobs across the state.
This is the part people get wrong, and it’s the part that causes failures. Three decisions: how thick the wall is, how big around it is, and which thread system you’re running.
Wall thickness (schedule). Schedule defines the wall and the pressure it’ll take. Pipe schedule defines wall thickness and pressure capacity, running through Schedule 10, Schedule 20, Schedule 40 (most common), and Schedule 80 / 160. Think of it in tiers — light-duty for conduit and fences, medium-duty for general plumbing and irrigation, and heavy-duty Schedule 80 for high-pressure or structural loads. Schedule 40 has thicker walls than Schedule 10 or 20, higher pressure-bearing capacity, and is commonly used in plumbing, water supply, gas pipelines, and construction. One thing to understand: the actual wall thickness varies depending on pipe diameter, but the schedule designation ensures consistent performance across sizes.
Size. Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is expressed in inches or millimeters, with a common range of 1/8” to 24”+, and galvanized pipes follow standard steel pipe dimensions.
Threads. Don’t mix systems. Ensure all fittings match the pipe’s thread system — NPT or BSPT — to avoid leaks. A fitting that almost threads on is a fitting that almost holds water.
Western Building Center carries galvanized pipe in pre-cut redi-cut lengths sized for repair and short-run work — 1/2-inch pipe in 18-, 24-, and 36-inch lengths, 3/4-inch in 30- and 48-inch lengths, and 1-inch in 24-inch lengths. Those short, threaded-end pieces are the bread and butter of fence brace work, irrigation tie-ins, and quick repairs where you don’t want to cut and thread your own.
When you’re buying, inspect what you’re handed. Verify quality by checking for smooth surfaces without zinc nodules and ensuring compliance with standards like ASTM A123 or A53.
Galvanized is a specialist. Use it where it’s strong, and don’t force it where it isn’t.
Strong fits. Common applications include plumbing, construction, hot and cold liquid transportation, bollards, exposed environments, marine environments, railings or handrails, and fence posts and fencing. Irrigation is a natural fit too — irrigation systems benefit because galvanized withstands moisture, soil contact, and weather exposure. On the structural side, these pipes are used in structural components and framing, providing the backbone for sturdy and long-lasting construction projects, and they remain robust and functional for years, with a life expectancy of 80 to 100 years.
Where to think twice. Interior potable water is the big one. Over time the zinc coating wears off, and problems begin to arise — interior rust buildup, lowered water pressure, and possible leakage. Once galvanized pipes were the pipes of choice; now copper or PVC pipes have taken their place due to longer life and reliability. Older galvanized water lines carry a second concern: pipes may release metals like lead and iron as the protective layer breaks down, and scale formation and surface roughness inside the pipes can also affect water quality and supply. For new interior supply, copper and PEX win.
Natural gas underground — read this twice. The code situation surprises people. Both the International Residential Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code do not prohibit the use of galvanized pipes for natural gas transportation, but local plumbing codes may restrict it, so check with your local licensed plumber. Underground is the hard stop, though: galvanized pipes are not allowed to carry natural gas underground in many areas, because they will eventually corrode and could cause a gas leak — instead, a factory-coated steel pipe must be used. Verify locally before you bury anything.
Galvanized is a threaded-system material. Almost everything connects with threads, sealant, and a wrench — no torch required for assembly.
Fittings. The galvanized family runs deep: adjustable elbows in a range of sizes from 4” through 12” and gauges from 24 to 30, nipples in sizes like 1/2”x1-1/2” up to 2”x12”, unions, and the dielectric unions and washers that handle metal transitions (stocked in sizes such as 3/4” and 1-1/2”).
Tools and sealing. Keep it simple. The essential tools are a pipe wrench, hacksaw or pipe cutter, threading tool, Teflon tape or pipe sealing compound, adjustable wrench or spanners, and safety equipment. Cut clean and deburr — clean and deburr the pipe ends for smoothly fitting joints. Seal the threads right: apply several layers of Teflon tape around all threaded pipe ends, or apply a pipe sealing compound following the manufacturer’s instructions. And don’t crank it past snug — ensure the fittings are not overtightened and stripped. When you cut a piece, restore the coating: apply zinc-rich primer to cut ends to restore protection.
The welding warning — this is the safety line. Do not casually weld galvanized. Welding galvanized steel produces toxic zinc fumes, which can cause serious health risks if inhaled. If welding is genuinely required, prep it right: remove the zinc coating near the weld area using a grinder or wire brush and clean the surface thoroughly, work with proper PPE including a helmet, gloves, and respirator, plus excellent ventilation or fume extraction, and avoid confined spaces without airflow. Afterward, allow natural cooling with no water quenching, inspect the weld, and recoat exposed areas if corrosion protection is required.
People mix these up constantly, and mixing them up underground causes real corrosion problems.
The visual tell is easy. Galvanized pipes are steel pipes coated with a layer of zinc to keep off the moisture and oxygen that cause corrosion — shiny silver. Black pipe is the opposite: black iron pipes are named as such due to the black iron oxide coating which forms when the pipes react with oxygen — matte black, uncoated. Black is the gas-line and fire-sprinkler material; black iron pipe is the best pipe for natural gas transportation, is manufactured without a seam which is excellent in leak prevention, and is used in fire sprinkler systems due to its high heat resistance.
Mixing metals — the galvanic trap. Connecting galvanized to a dissimilar metal sets up a reaction. The connection creates a dissimilar metal reaction which is nothing to worry about if the connection is in the atmosphere, but a significant one if the connection is underground. Dry indoor air, no real problem. Wet or buried, it matters. That’s what dielectric unions and washers are for — they separate the two metals at the transition and break the galvanic path. Keep a few of the common sizes on hand when you’re tying galvanized into copper or black iron.
How long will galvanized pipe last on an outdoor or structural job? A long time. In structural and outdoor service, galvanized steel pipe can last 80 to 100 years or more, depending on how much corrosion exposure it sees. The zinc rusts away sacrificially before the steel underneath is touched. In plumbing service the figure is lower — roughly 25 to 40 years — and hot water shortens it considerably.
Can galvanized pipe carry natural gas? The IRC and UPC don’t prohibit galvanized for natural gas, but local codes may restrict it, so verify with a local licensed plumber before using it. The firm rule: galvanized is not allowed to carry natural gas underground in many areas because it eventually corrodes and could cause a leak — a factory plastic-coated steel pipe must be used for buried gas.
Why isn’t galvanized used for interior water lines anymore? The zinc coating wears off over time, leading to interior rust buildup, reduced water pressure, and possible leaks. Aging galvanized lines can also release metals like lead and iron and build up internal scale that chokes flow. Copper and PVC took over for interior supply because they last longer and stay cleaner inside.
What’s Schedule 40, and do I need something heavier? Schedule 40 is the most common wall thickness — thicker than Schedule 10 or 20, with solid pressure capacity for plumbing, water supply, and general construction. Step up to Schedule 80 or 160 only when you’re dealing with high pressure or structural loads. The schedule designation holds consistent performance across pipe diameters even though the actual wall thickness changes with size.
Why shouldn’t I just weld galvanized pipe? Because welding it produces toxic zinc fumes that are a serious health hazard. Galvanized is built to be a threaded system — cut, thread, seal, and wrench. If welding is truly unavoidable, grind the zinc off the weld zone first, use a respirator and strong ventilation, let it cool naturally without quenching, and recoat the bare steel afterward.
Can I connect galvanized straight to copper or black iron? Not directly where it’s wet or buried — dissimilar metals set off a galvanic reaction. The reaction is insignificant for connections sitting in dry atmosphere, but significant underground or in wet conditions. Use a dielectric union or washer at the transition to separate the metals and stop the corrosion.
