How to Pick the Right Material, Size, and Cap
Building MaterialsThe single most important decision in dryer venting is material. Use 4-inch smooth-walled rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Never plastic, vinyl, or foil-accordion. That’s not a preference — it’s a fire-safety line that’s been drawn for good reason.
The Dryer Manufacturer’s Association recommends that clothes dryers be exhausted to the outdoors through a rigid or semi-rigid metal vent pipe of not less than 0.016-inch (0.4mm) thick material with smooth interior surfaces. The reason is straightforward. Because of their potential to collect lint, overheat, and actually cause fires, vinyl ducts or flexible plastic ducts are not recommended to vent a clothes dryer.
Bathroom venting plays by looser rules. Unlike dryer ducts, bathroom ducts have a bit more flexibility when it comes to allowable materials. The interior surface can be smooth or ridged because metal, plastic, and aluminum flex ducts are permitted. One caveat for Montana attics: it is recommended to have insulation around bathroom ducts in the attic. That matters here. Frost forming in the attic over the bathroom area on the roof’s underside during freezing weather can be potentially unsafe, particularly if large icicles form. An uninsulated bath duct in an unheated attic is asking for frost on the sheathing come January.
Three duct families cover the work. Ducts come in three main types: rigid, semi-rigid and flexible. For a dryer’s permanent run, rigid aluminum or galvanized metal is the standard. Save the semi-rigid for the short transition between the dryer body and the wall connection, where you need a little give for the machine to sit back.
Diameter and run length drive everything else. Stick with 4-inch smooth-walled metal. Keep the total run under 35 feet, and remember that elbows eat into that number — subtract 5 feet for every 90-degree elbow and 2.5 feet for every 45. The more turns, the more lint snags and the harder the dryer works. Point male ends toward the exterior so each joint sheds lint instead of catching it. Strap horizontal runs every 4 to 6 feet so the line doesn’t sag and trap debris.
For galvanized duct on HVAC and supply runs, gauge and shape are the variables. Galvanized button-lock duct comes in 26, 28, and 30 gauge in both round and rectangular configurations. Heavier gauge (26) for trunk lines and harder-working runs, lighter (30) for lighter-duty branches.
Insulated flexible duct, where it belongs, carries real ratings. Insulated flexible ducts are offered in R-4.2, R-6, and R-8 values — pick the higher R-value for runs through unconditioned space where condensation and heat loss are concerns.

Here’s where people go wrong. Seal joints with UL-listed aluminum foil tape — not screws. Screws stick into the airstream and catch lint, which builds up and raises fire risk. Foil tape keeps the interior smooth.
The connecting hardware is simple enough. Clamps, 90-degree elbows, collars, take-offs, reducers, and transitions handle the changes in direction and diameter. For insulated flex used on HVAC distribution, the listings matter. Flexible duct must be UL Standard 181 listed and labeled, and fibrous glass duct board must be UL Standard 181 listed.
The exit point keeps weather, birds, and backdrafts out. Choose a dryer-specific aerodynamic vent cap or roof jack to cut back pressure and block pests. The exterior cap should include a backdraft damper that seals when the dryer’s off — a real benefit through a long Montana winter, since it keeps cold air from pouring back down the duct.
A purpose-built roof vent shows what to look for. The IB TPO dryer/exhaust unit is a two-piece metal vent with built-in backdraft dampers that close the vent opening when not in use, heavy 26-gauge galvanized metal construction, and a 4-inch under-flange drop for easy connection to exhaust duct. It’s built to handle the cold: baffles and gaskets reduce cold air intrusion, condensation, and noise.
Two installation rules carry weight. First, on dryer applications, skip the screen. Omit screen inserts if used in a dryer vent application to help prevent debris build-up. Lint and mesh don’t mix. Second, watch the temperature when you’re working a membrane roof. Membranes must not be applied during adverse weather or without precautionary measures in temperatures below 40°F (4°C). That’s a genuine constraint on cold-season roofing here — plan terminations for a warmer window.
Whatever cap goes on, seal the flashing at the roof surface with exterior-grade caulk to keep water out. Apply cut-edge sealant around the edge of the flashing flange, and apply duct tape where both pipes connect if necessary, to prevent any exhaust leakage.
For wall and roof terminations, Western Building Center stocks a 3-1/4” x 10” aluminum wall vent cap, a 4-inch eave/soffit vent, and a NuTone 4-inch cap, among the duct connectors and clamps noted above.
One attic note worth keeping in mind for snow country. If there are not enough air vents on the roof, certain sections of the attic will get too hot. In winter this may cause the snow on the roof to melt and then freeze again, causing ice dams in the gutters. Proper venting isn’t only about the dryer — it’s part of keeping ice dams off the eaves.
Can flexible plastic or foil duct be used for a dryer? No. Because of their potential to collect lint, overheat, and actually cause fires, vinyl ducts or flexible plastic ducts are not recommended to vent a clothes dryer. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal for the run, with metal recommended at not less than 0.016-inch thick and a smooth interior.

It is recommended to insulate bathroom ducts in the attic. Insulation is what keeps frost off the underside of the roof in freezing weather.
Does the exterior vent cap need a damper? Yes. A backdraft damper seals the opening when the dryer is off, blocking cold air, weather, and pests. Wall and roof caps are designed with opening/closing dampers to prevent outside elements from entering the vent.
Should a screen go on a dryer vent cap? No. Omit screen inserts on a dryer vent application to help prevent debris build-up. Lint clogs mesh fast and chokes airflow.
How often should ducts and vents be cleaned? Regularly. Vents, ducts, and louvers should be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent build-up of dust, lint, and debris. A dryer vent brush or cleaning kit handles routine lint removal.
