How to Choose the Right Type, Diameter, and Components

The single rule that matters more than any other: the appliance dictates everything. Consult the owner’s manual for your hearth appliance first — different fireplaces and stoves have varying venting requirements. Those requirements involve more than just the kind of pipe you need; they also include specific information about clearances and offsets that must be followed for safe and proper installation. Pipe type, diameter, clearances — the manual decides all of it. Buy the wrong pipe and you’ve got a fire or carbon monoxide problem, not a venting problem.

Vent pipe isn’t one product. It’s a family of systems, each matched to a fuel and a draft type. Wood smoke runs hot and dirty. Gas runs cooler and can turn corrosive. Pellet has its own rules. Pick the system that matches the appliance, then commit to it for the entire run.

The Main Types and What Each One Vents

Class A insulated chimney is the workhorse for high-temperature solid fuel. By code, oil-burning units require Class A pipe, and it’s the standard for wood-burning appliances. When a wood stove or fireplace has to pass through a roof or exterior wall, the chimney will need to be a Class A chimney system to go through the roof and the outside. A double-wall stovepipe coming off the stove is not a substitute for the chimney portion.

B-Vent (Type B) is double-wall metal pipe built for natural-draft gas appliances. It is not for wood smoke. A vent connector can be either single-wall metal pipe or Type B, which is double-wall metal pipe with an insulating effect. The insulating gap keeps flue gas warm enough to keep moving.

Direct vent systems handle sealed gas combustion using coaxial pipe — one path pulls outside air in, the other pushes exhaust out. Some models accept flexible venting, but that’s model-specific. It depends on the specific model — some direct vent gas fireplaces can use a flexible vent pipe, but others cannot. This information will be stated clearly in the installation manual.

Pellet venting is its own animal with its own specifications, separate from Class A and B-Vent.

Single-wall black stovepipe is the connector between the appliance and the chimney — the visible black pipe in the room. It’s the lower-cost piece, but it has hard limits. The main vent can never be made of single-wall metal pipe. It must be either Type B pipe, tile lined masonry chimney, or a flexible metal liner. On the gas side, single-wall carries restrictions: single-wall metal vent connectors are lower in cost than Type B connectors, but they operate at much higher surface temperatures. Consequently, there are many restrictions — single-wall metal connectors cannot be used in attics due to the fire hazard, and they must have greater clearances on all structural components than Type B connectors.

Matching Pipe to the Appliance: Diameter and the No-Mixing Rule

Two mistakes cause most of the dangerous installs: reducing diameter, and mixing systems. Both kill draft.

Never neck down below the appliance outlet. The appliance you are installing will dictate the diameter of your vent system. Most wood inserts require a 6” diameter stainless steel liner that cannot be reduced in size. If anything, you go up — a stove with a 6” outlet sized for 6” stovepipe can use a 6” to 8” adapter that increases stove pipe size before connecting to a Class A chimney.

Once you pick a brand and a size, you’re married to it. You can’t go from double insulated chimney pipe to triple insulated chimney pipe. Once you pick a brand and a size you have to stay with that for the entire install. Extending an existing chimney follows the same logic — by code, the same brand/model of chimney pipe must be used to extend your chimney. Don’t go looking for a cheaper pipe to finish the run.

Transitions between the stovepipe and the chimney require the right adapter, and they’re not thrown in the box. Adapters are required to go from the black stove pipe to the chimney components. Most brands have adapters that are sold separately. The black slide pipe off the stove usually requires an adapter or finishing collar to meet the Class A chimney. WBC carries those connector and adapter pieces — 6” and 8” connectors, a 6–8” increaser, and a 7X6 reducer among them.

Clearances, Height, and Termination

Clearance to combustibles is non-negotiable and it’s printed on the listing. Class A insulated chimney typically runs a 2-inch minimum — DuraChimney II, for one, is listed at maintaining at least 2” clearance to combustibles.

Height isn’t guesswork either. Building codes require a minimum of 3’ above the roof penetration and at least 2’ higher than any portion of a building within 10’. That’s the termination rule — the well-known 3-2-10. Below that, you need enough vertical run to pull draft in the first place. Minimum recommended chimney height, at sea level, of straight vertical chimney, is 10’ to 15’ above the fireplace outlet.

That sea-level number doesn’t apply across most of this region. Higher elevations, or the use of elbows, will require approximately 30% to 60% more height to provide for an adequate draft. Build at 3,000-plus feet and add elbows to dodge rafters, and you’re stacking more pipe to get the same pull. Plan for it before you buy.

Offsets carry their own limits. If possible, avoid offsets — a straight vertical installation is more efficient and less likely to develop creosote. If an offset is required to avoid rafters or other obstructions, measure the horizontal distance and the vertical height available. Elbows greater than 30° are not allowed in the United States. Two offsets (four elbows) in a single installation are permitted.

A proper install is a parts list, not a single pipe. A storm collar is required for all installations using a flashing. Add the firestop, ceiling support or anchor plate, roof flashing, storm collar, and chimney cap. WBC’s chimney inventory covers the supporting cast — storm collars, locking and wall bands, adjustable roof flashing for 6/12 to 12/12 pitches, roof brace kits, and round chimney tops and vent caps in 3” through 8”.

Local codes lean on the recognized standards here: NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code for gas, which relies heavily on venting tables from the Gas Research Institute, with the corresponding international version IFGC.

Relining a Masonry Chimney and Beating Condensation

Plenty of older homes have a masonry chimney that’s swapping appliances or showing its age. Condensation is the killer. The whole job of a liner is to keep the gases warm enough that they don’t turn to acid on the way out. Chimneys are typically built with chimney liners inside them for added insulation from cold ambient air temperatures and winds that could otherwise cool the flue pipe and allow the gases to condense. Liners also assist with airflow and ventilation of the rising gases.

Cold matters more here than in most places. The exhaust inside a flue pipe must remain warm while traveling to the exterior so that the gas does not condense into a corrosive liquid and fall back into the system. Long runs from a basement appliance up through several stories give that gas plenty of time to cool.

The corrosion risk is worst on a specific class of gas appliance. Low-efficiency gas appliances such as older 78 percent AFUE furnaces rarely have a condensate problem because the flue gas exits relatively hot. But many furnaces and heaters have an efficiency just below 83 percent and the flue gas exits much cooler. These are known as Category I appliances, and they are much more prone to developing unwanted condensate. Skip a proper liner and the damage compounds: venting combustion gases through a chimney without a proper liner often results in the collapse of the chimney as condensate can dissolve the mortar between bricks.

Insulated double-wall reline systems address this directly. DuraLiner is a high-temperature, insulated double-wall masonry relining system for appliances fueled by gas, pellet, oil, wood, or coal that protects masonry chimneys from the damaging effects of flue product condensation. It comes in 5”, 6”, and 8” diameters. A smooth inner means less creosote buildup.

Two rules govern the reline. First, size to the appliance: the size of the liner should match the outlet size on the appliance. Second, clean before you line: before relining a chimney, it should be cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep, to verify the integrity of the mortar and masonry. And keep the run as straight as you can — keep the vent path as straight as possible for best performance.

If the masonry itself is too far gone, you can transition to a manufactured system. You can use an anchor plate to transition a functional masonry chimney to a manufactured, stainless steel Class A chimney system. The diameter of the pipe needed will depend on the inside flue dimensions of the existing chimney.

When to Bring in a Pro

Venting mistakes don’t show up as a warranty call. They show up as a fire, a collapsed chimney, or carbon monoxide in the house. Carbon monoxide poisoning, collapsing chimneys, fire hazards, corrosion of vents, draft inducers, heat exchangers, and non-conformance with building codes are all problems associated with improper gas vent installations. Here’s how that failure cascades: acidic condensate forms on the inside of the vent pipe and causes rusting and pitting. As corrosion continues, the vent pipe becomes riddled with holes and ultimately fails. When this happens, vent gas containing carbon monoxide can leak into occupied areas.

Gas vent sizing in particular gets technical fast. The size from the table must often be adjusted according to over 30 notes and exceptions — for example, for every 90-degree elbow beyond the quantity two, the Btuh capacity for a vent size must be reduced by 10 percent. It is not uncommon for a vent design to need three or more adjusting factors. That’s not a Saturday-afternoon judgment call.

A reasonable rule: a competent DIYer can handle a straightforward straight-up wood stove install with a properly matched Class A system. Anything involving gas sizing tables, a multistory run, a questionable masonry chimney, or a reline deserves a professional eye. Be fire safe — follow local building codes and have your venting system inspected.

One more thing worth knowing on lifespan: 20 years for Class A pipe is a fairly conservative estimate for lifespan, but that certainly holds true for some applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use pellet venting for an oil-burning stove? No. By code, oil burning units require Class A pipe. Pellet venting has its own specifications and isn’t interchangeable.

Can I reduce the pipe diameter to match what I already have on the roof? No — reducing diameter below the appliance outlet compromises draft.
