How to Pick the Right Grade and Span
Building MaterialsA 2x12 in Douglas Fir-Larch is the deep, stiff workhorse you reach for when the span gets long or the load gets heavy. Floor joists, rafters, headers, beams, stair stringers — this is the dimensional board that handles the jobs smaller stock can’t. Douglas fir/larch is strong and easily adaptable, valued for its dimensional stability and high specific gravity, offering superior fastener holding along with a high strength-to-weight ratio — and it carries the highest Modulus of Elasticity value of all North American tree species. That stiffness is exactly why it gets specified for the long stuff.
First thing every buyer needs to internalize: build to the actual size, not the name. A nominal 2x12 measures 38 x 284 mm — that’s 1.5 inches by 11.25 inches in the real world. Lay your stringers and rim out to 11.25, not 12, or your cuts won’t land.
The grade stamp tells you everything. Grades run from Select Structural and J-Grade down through A-Grade, #2 & Btr, #3, and Economy, and the stamp shows you which one you’ve got. For most residential framing, No. 2 is the board that earns its keep. Select Structural is the premium pick reserved for high-stress members — beams and headers where the numbers get tight.

The grade you pick drives the design values, and the design values drive the span. Here’s where No. 2 DF-L 2x12 lands:

Those No. 2 2x12 DFL values — Fb 850, E 1,600,000, specific gravity 0.49 — are the baseline most framing gets designed against. Note that bending strength climbs as the board narrows: a No. 2 2x4 runs Fb 1,275, a 2x8 runs 1,020, and the 2x12 sits at 850. Wider boards carry deeper sections, so the geometry does the heavy lifting even as the per-inch bending value drops.
That high specific gravity isn’t just a number. High specific gravity gives excellent nail and metal truss plate-holding capability, and DF-L carries a documented excellent performance record against strong forces resulting from winds, storms and earthquakes. In a state with seismic belts and snow-driven structural loads, that track record matters.
The whole reason to step up to a 2x12 is span. Run the real tables before you size anything.
For standard floor framing at 40 psf live / 10 psf dead, here’s how DF-L 2x12 stacks up by grade and spacing:

Douglas Fir-Larch Select Structural 2x12 spans 23-3 at 12 inches, 21-1 at 16 inches, 19-10 at 19.2 inches, and 18-5 at 24 inches under that 40/10 floor load with deflection held to L/360. Those numbers assume a floor — change the load and everything shifts.
For beams carrying concentrated loads, the picture is different. For beams supporting floors, the No. 2 grade 2x12 uses an fb of 1005 psi with deflection limited to L/240. For beams supporting roofs, the No. 2 2x12 fb runs 1125 psi with deflection limited to L/360. And if you’re building up a multi-ply beam: the published fb values are for repetitive-use members — when only one or two members make up a beam, non-repetitive values apply. When plywood flitch plates are used, add 7% to the values.
Montana adds its own wrinkle. The standard 40 psf floor assumption doesn’t cover roof snow loads, and snow stacks up here. Don’t lean on a generic floor table for a rafter or roof beam carrying valley or mountain snow — consult IRC span tables or a structural engineer for specific site requirements, especially when designing for seismic zones, heavy snow, or unique loads. At elevation, that’s not optional.
Crown it up. Always. Sight down every board, find the high side of the bow, and install with the crown pointing skyward so the load settles it flat over time.
Connections carry the load, so don’t shortcut them. Use rated joist hangers for connections and ensure bearing ends are stable. Size the hangers for a 2x12 — a 2x10 hanger won’t give you the bearing or the nailing pattern the deeper board needs.
Moisture is the quiet enemy of dimensional lumber, and Montana’s dry-to-wet swing works against you. Buy kiln-dried. Kiln-dried (KD19) lumber is preferred to minimize shrinkage and warping. A board that comes in straight and dry stays that way through the seasons better than green stock. Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir and Western Larch resist crook, bow and warping for reliable performance, and the fir is easy to work with, making it ideal for structural framing.
For anything exposed — deck beams, rim joists, ledgers, ground contact — you’re in different territory. Western Larch features a tight grain and strong resistance to rot, making it well-suited for outdoor uses like decking, siding and fencing. Pair the right species treatment with corrosion-resistant fasteners and the freeze-thaw cycling won’t eat your framing.
What are the actual dimensions of a 2x12? It’s a nominal name, not a measurement. A 2x12 actually measures 38 x 284 mm — 1.5 inches thick by 11.25 inches wide. Lay out and cut to 11.25, never 12.
Is No. 2 grade good enough, or do I need Select Structural? No. 2 DF-L is the residential workhorse and handles the majority of framing. Select Structural is the upgrade for high-stress members — beams and headers — where you need the extra span. A Select Structural 2x12 spans 23-3 at 12-inch spacing under a standard floor load, versus less for lower grades. Don’t over-buy strength you won’t use, but don’t under-spec a beam either.
How far can a 2x12 floor joist span? Under a 40 psf live / 10 psf dead floor load with L/360 deflection, Select Structural DF-L runs 21-1 at 16-inch spacing and 18-5 at 24-inch spacing. That’s floor loading only — roof and snow loads change the answer.
What does KD19 mean on the stamp? Kiln-dried to 19% maximum moisture content. Kiln-dried lumber is preferred to minimize shrinkage and warping, which matters through Montana’s seasonal moisture swings.
What’s the deal with the Modulus of Elasticity? It’s the stiffness number. This species combination has the highest modulus of elasticity value — the stiffness factor — of all North American softwoods. Higher stiffness means less bounce and deflection over a long span, which is exactly why DF-L gets specified for joists and rafters.
Can I use a 2x12 for stair stringers? Yes — the 11.25-inch depth is the reason. That width gives you the material to cut tread and riser notches and still leave enough board behind the cuts to carry the load.
Why does DF-L hold fasteners so well? Its high specific gravity gives excellent nail and metal truss plate-holding capability. The 0.49 specific gravity is dense enough that nails, screws, and truss plates grip hard.
