How to Pick the Right One for Your Walls

It’s a handheld tool designed to help users locate the internal framing members, commonly called studs, behind walls, ceilings, or floors without causing damage to the surface. The right choice comes down to one thing: what your walls are made of. Standard drywall, plaster-and-lath, layered remodel walls — each one favors a different technology.
That matters in older Montana housing stock. Plaster-and-lath walls confuse the electronic finders that read density. Know your wall before you buy.
Most stud finders fall into a few buckets. A stud finder works by detecting changes in density or electrical properties behind a wall. Most modern stud finders are electronic and use sensors that measure variations in capacitance or density as the device is slowly moved across the wall. When the tool passes over empty space, the wall material has a relatively consistent reading, but when it passes over a stud, the increased density or different dielectric properties cause a noticeable change in the signal.
Magnetic finders are the simplest. They locate the metal fasteners — nails and screws — rather than the stud body itself. No batteries, no calibration. These are the dependable pick for plaster-and-lath, where capacitive electronics get fooled.
Electronic capacitive finders read density and find both edges and center. They’re precise on standard drywall but struggle on plaster and dense surfaces. The Klein ESF100 detects hidden wood and metal studs up to 1-1/2-inch deep with auto deep scan capability.
Center-finding models work differently than edge finders. While traditional stud sensors locate the edge of the stud, the DEWALT center sensor locates the center for a more efficient read, even when held at an angle. The sensor is constantly calibrating to save time during use. That depth tops out at a detection depth of 3/4 in. for wood and metal.
If you work layered walls and want safety built in, look at the multi-scan units. The Klein ESF200 uses LED indicators to show the full width and edges of studs, calibrates automatically, and detects live AC wires, wood, and metal without switching modes. A few specifics worth knowing. The ESF100 gives bright LEDs spanning the stud width with mutable audible alerts, a HOLD mode for continuous scanning, and withstands a 6.6-foot drop. The ESF150LL adds leveling tools: horizontal and vertical cross-line lasers usable together or independently, rated Laser Class 3R at ≤5mW, reaching 15 feet in all directions.
Live-wire detection is the safety feature that separates the models. The ESF100 and ESF150LL don’t detect voltage. The ESF200 and the DEWALT do — AC and live wire detection for added safety. If you’re drilling near outlets or switches, that’s the column you want a “yes” in.
The DEWALT signals differently than the LED-width Klein units. Once the stud is located, an audible alert and directional LED arrows clearly notify the user, and a center marking channel lets you mark the center.

One trade-off worth flagging: the Stud is no longer available with a magnetic hook. If you want the magnet, that’s a different model in the family.

A small pilot hole confirms solid wood before a heavy bracket goes up.
The applications are broad. A wall stud finder is essential for mounting shelves, cabinets, mirrors, or large picture frames, and wall-mounted TVs and heavy curtain fixtures require precise positioning on studs to support weight safely. On the build side, professionals verify stud placement in new construction, avoid studs when running electrical wires, pipes, or HVAC ducts, and identify load-bearing studs when adding or removing walls.
There’s also a combined tool concept worth knowing about. Locating a stud, then putting the stud finder down to use a tape measure, involves numerous steps, is time consuming, and is prone to inaccuracy. Combined stud-finder-and-tape designs exist to cut that tool-switching out of the workflow.
Which stud finder works on plaster walls? Magnetic finders are the more reliable choice on plaster-and-lath because they locate the metal nails and screws rather than reading density. Capacitive electronic finders sense density changes and struggle on plaster and dense surfaces. Multi-scan units that scan deeper and wider also handle layered and thicker walls better than basic capacitive models.
Do I need a stud finder that detects live wires? If you’re drilling near outlets, switches, or any wiring run, yes. The Klein ESF100 and ESF150LL do not detect voltage — fine for picture hanging, less ideal when wiring could be in play.
