How to Pick the Right Grit, Grain, and Block

Sanding looks simple. It isn’t. It’s a machining process where abrasive grains act as microscopic cutters. Match the grit, the mineral, and the block to the job, and you get a paint-ready surface. Get it wrong and you clog paper, gouge the work, or burn through a finish. This guide is for anyone prepping wood, drywall, trim, or painted surfaces who needs to choose the right abrasive instead of grabbing whatever’s in the bin.

The biggest mistake DIYers make is grit selection. Too coarse and you leave scratches the finish will telegraph. Too fine too early and you waste time. The fix is a deliberate coarse-to-fine progression, and that starts with knowing what each grit range actually does.

Grit Grades and How to Sequence Them

Grit number tells you cutting power. Lower numbers cut hard and fast. Higher numbers refine. Here’s the working breakdown:

The rule that saves finishes: sand with the grain of the surface and work through a sequence of grits, from coarse to very fine, skipping no more than one grit between each sanding step. Jump from 80 straight to 220 and the coarse scratches never get cleared — they just hide until the stain hits.

Different materials want different starting points. For raw wood, run through the stages and stop at 180 to 220 before staining or sealing. For metal, start coarse to strip, step to medium before priming, then go fine before paint.

Between each step, two habits matter. Vacuum dust between steps, and check surfaces under raking light to identify imperfections. That side light is the trick old finishers use — flaws invisible head-on jump right out under a low angle.

Abrasive Mineral and Backing

Buyers obsess over grit and ignore the grain itself. That’s backwards. The mineral matters as much as the number. Aluminum oxide is the standard for wood, silicon carbide works best for plastics and finishes, and zirconia is preferred for heavy-duty metal or hardwood stock removal.

Backing is the other half of the decision. Paper is affordable for general tasks but tears easily, while film is durable, waterproof, and flat. And if dust is the enemy — which it is on drywall and finish work — mesh or net abrasives are superior for dust extraction.

One thing that’s not worth the savings: avoid low-quality bulk sandpaper, which clogs and tears prematurely. Cheap paper costs more in the end because you burn through sheets and ruin the finish doing it.

Blocks and Sponges — Choosing by Flex and Shape

Bare-handed sanding is the slow road, and it shows. Uneven pressure can create unsightly grooves and scratches on larger surfaces. A block fixes that. A sanding block distributes pressure evenly, so you get and maintain a more perfect surface. It enables you to apply even pressure, and it prevents your sandpaper from bunching up or slipping.

Pick the block by flex. Rigid rubber or cork for flat surfaces and hardwoods, and soft foam or sponges for curves and irregular shapes. A hard block won’t follow a contour without flattening it. A soft sponge won’t keep a flat surface flat.

Sponges earn their keep on detail and reuse. Sanding sponges with angled edges are great for getting into cracks and grooves that a regular sander can’t reach. They have a bit of give, so you can even use them on curved surfaces like painted baseboards. A general-purpose foam sponge works for dry or wet sanding of wood, paint, metal, plastic and drywall, and when finished, you simply rinse and reuse. Blocks also do finish-prep work power tools can’t. They’re perfect for breaking the corners on a finished project before painting or staining. Matching the Abrasive to the Job

A few task-specific notes worth knowing.

Wood finishing. Run the full progression, stop at 180–220 before stain or seal, and always go with the grain.

Painted surfaces. To de-gloss intact glossy paint before recoating, 120–180 does the work. Between coats of clear finish, a high-grit pad is the move — it’s less aggressive than a power sander, so it doesn’t sand the finish away completely. These are mainly used for buffing the surface to remove brush strokes or dust that settled in the finish as it dried. When de-glossing, be careful not to catch the edge of the block on the work surface, as this will tear loose the abrasive.

Drywall. After mud dries, sanding screens or sponges handle the knock-down, then a finer pass cleans the paper face. Screens shed less dust on ceilings.
