How to Pick the Right Grit and Shape

A sanding sponge is a foam block or pad with abrasive bonded to one or more faces. It’s built for dry or wet sanding of wood, paint, metal, plastic, and drywall, made with durable, flexible foam. Two things decide whether it does the job right: the grit you pick and the shape that lets you actually reach the surface. Everything else is detail.

For most hand-sanding prep work, a sponge beats loose sheet sandpaper. It conforms to the surface, doesn’t tear at the corners, and you rinse it and use it again. The trade-off is you’re limited to the grits and shapes the format comes in — but for paint and drywall prep, that range covers nearly everything.

Grit Selection — The One Thing Buyers Get Wrong

Grit is the decision that determines your finish. Coarse grit cuts fast and leaves scratches. Fine grit smooths. The mistake is jumping from coarse straight to fine and expecting a clean surface.

The rule is consistent across every product line: sand with the grain of the surface and work through a sequence of grits, from coarse to very fine, skipping no more than one grit between each sanding step. Skip more than one and you’ll spend your fine grit chasing scratches the coarse grit left behind.

General-purpose sponges come in combined grade pairs so you can carry the sequence on fewer blocks. The stock list includes Medium/Coarse, Fine/Medium, Extra Fine/Fine, and single-grade options. These sponges are available in medium, fine or extra fine grits. In numbered terms, common block grits run 80 (medium), 120, 180, 220 (fine), and 320.

For auto-body and specialty finishing, the grit range climbs much higher. Extra fine, 320–400, grit sponges are used for sanding putty, glaze and primer. Ultra fine 800–1000 grit sponges are used for lightly scratching (or scuffing) the area around a repair before painting. Micro fine 1200–1500 grit sponges are used for paint finishing and for sanding clear coat.

Shape and Form — Reaching the Surface

Grit decides the finish. Shape decides whether you can touch the surface at all. Three forms cover the work.

Block sponges. The standard for flat and broad work. The block shape makes it easy to hold and sands flat, contoured, or irregular surfaces. Good for walls, panels, doors, framing. The stock list carries general-purpose blocks plus dedicated drywall versions.

Angled blocks. Cut for detail. The single-angle block measures 4.875 in x 2.875 in x 1 in, with angled sides designed for detailed sanding. When you’re working into corners or along trim, the angle does what a square block can’t.

Thin and flexible pads. Built for curves and tight spots. Highly flexible to provide a uniform finish on curves and contours, each sponge sands curved areas such as bumpers, complex body lines, headlight openings, door handles, door jambs, and more. These specialty purpose sponges reach challenging locations that ordinary sanding tools cannot reach, and the soft foam backing helps to evenly distribute pressure points while hand sanding, creating a smooth and consistent finish. The stock list carries thin sponges in Extra Fine, Fine, and Medium.

Multi-side sponges. The four-sided design puts two grit grades on one block — the stock list includes Extra Fine/Fine, Fine/Medium, and Medium/Coarse four-side options. One block, two steps in your sequence.

A couple of specialty pieces round it out. The stock list carries a 4-inch double stripper pad for paint and rust removal, plus a dust-channeling sponge. That one is designed to remove coatings from wood and metal before bare surface sanding, made with premium grits for an efficient cut, with a pliable design that fits in hard-to-reach places.

Material, Reuse, and Why It Beats Loose Sandpaper

The abrasive type tells you the intended job. General-purpose sponges run aluminum oxide or corundum — the Vulcan listing is a corundum abrasive in fine and medium grit. The flexible auto-body pads use silicon carbide abrasive material. Silicon carbide is the one you want for wet work and metal.

That brings up the real argument for the format. These are suitable for wet sanding or dry sanding. When you’re done, simply rinse and reuse. Loose sandpaper clogs and gets thrown out. A sponge gets rinsed clean.

Durability follows from the foam. The block resists loading, which allows for larger sanding coverage, and the sponge lasts longer than conventional sandpaper to last from start to finish of sanding projects.   • Paint prep — medium to fine for scuffing, fine and up for finish work.
