Sanding belts and discs are abrasive tools designed to smooth, shape, or finish materials like wood, metal, plastic, and stone, using a rough surface to remove material and leave a smoother result. The format is the first fork in the road. A sanding belt is a continuous loop of abrasive that wraps around two rollers, built for heavy-duty work like surface preparation, stock removal, and sanding large flat surfaces. Discs are circular abrasives that attach to a rotating power tool and shine on smaller, detailed tasks — finishing edges, corners, and spots a belt sander can’t reach.
Belts move material fast. They handle floors, tabletops, and doors, and the wider the belt, the more surface area it covers, which means faster sanding. Discs are made for door frames, furniture, and cabinets, plus removing paint or rust from metal. Pick the belt when you’re flattening or stripping. Reach for the disc when you’re shaping a curve, blending an edge, or chasing a finish.
The grain on the belt or disc matters as much as the format. Four materials cover nearly everything a Montana shop throws at them.

Aluminum oxide is the default for a reason. It’s the most common and versatile abrasive for belts, ideal across wood, metal, and plastic, balancing affordability and performance for general shaping and smoothing. Step up to zirconia or ceramic when you’re grinding hard metal or pushing hard on hardwood. Zirconium oxide is tough and durable, well-suited to heavy-duty applications, offering aggressive cutting on hard metals, stainless steel, and other tough surfaces.
This is where most jobs go sideways. Wrong grit ruins the finish. Skip too many grades and you’ll never sand out the scratches.
Grit numbers run backwards from what feels intuitive. Lower numbers are coarser grits, ideal for aggressive material removal; higher numbers are finer grits for polishing and finishing. Here’s the working breakdown:

On discs, the attachment system is the call. Hook-and-loop discs use a Velcro-like system, making them easy to swap out. Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) discs use an adhesive backing to stick to the sander, common in industrial settings for finishing metal, wood, or painted surfaces. For contoured work, foam discs are best for moist finishing of clear coats, varnishes, and gel coats — they produce equal pressure, a uniform scratch pattern, and the foam backer conforms to any contour.
Belt setup is straightforward but unforgiving when ignored. Make sure the belt is properly tensioned — a loose belt sands inefficiently, while an overly tight belt causes premature wear. Keep it tracked right or you’ll chew up the belt. Then keep it working. Avoid holding the belt in one place too long; keep it moving steadily for an even finish and to prevent overheating.
Worn abrasive earns its replacement. Over time, belts clog or lose their abrasive properties — monitor the condition and change them when they show signs of wear for consistent performance. A worn or damaged belt reduces performance and can damage the surface you’re sanding.
Dust isn’t optional to manage. Sanding generates fine dust that may be harmful if inhaled, so wear eye protection and a respiratory mask, and work with proper ventilation. Dust extraction does double duty — it keeps the abrasive from clogging and keeps the air clean.
Storage matters more than people think in an unheated Montana shop or garage. Store sanding tools in a dry, cool place and avoid exposing them to moisture or extreme temperatures, which can damage the sanding surface and shorten lifespan.
