Chalk Lines, Markers, and Mason's Line
ToolsThree different jobs, three different tools. Chalk lines snap a long straight reference across a floor or wall. Markers and crayons label individual cuts and reference points. Mason’s line strings a taut guide that keeps a brick or block wall straight and level. Pick the wrong one for the surface and conditions, and you’re either chasing a line that washed away by lunch or fighting a stain you can’t get off a finished surface.
The right choice comes down to three questions. What’s the surface — dry and smooth, or wet and porous? How long does the mark need to last? And how far away do you need to see it? Get those answers straight and the tool picks itself.
A chalk line is simpler than it looks and more particular than most people give it credit for. At its simplest, a chalk line is a string coated with colored chalk, pulled taut between two points, drawn up off the surface like a bowstring and released — when the string snaps back, some of the chalk falls off, marking a line. Three parts make up the system: the chalk, the string, and the reel that holds them together.
Start with the string, because that’s where the result lives. A precision line looks more like a pencil line; a giant line looks like a magic-marker line. The former is great for flooring where precision matters, the latter for cutting concrete where visibility and duration of the line are key. Most people don’t need the extremes. Standard is by far the best seller — about 70% of the lines sold are standard lines. One thing about thickness worth knowing: a thicker string like a bold or a giant carries and releases more chalk than a piano-wire-thin precision line.
The reel matters less than buyers think. Reel housings come in two sizes — standard, where the entire reel fits in your palm, and what’s called Giant, which has a grip and a chalk reservoir that hangs below. About 80% of chalk line reels sold in North America are standard size, with standard string and a little hook on the end.
Then there’s the rewind gearing, which gets oversold. A 1x rewind reel has no gear, so there’s very little that can go wrong with it. A 3x rewind employs a gear to speed the rewind, saving you 10-15 seconds on a 50-foot line retraction. There are 6x reels out there too, but the math doesn’t favor them. An additional 3-6 seconds gets saved with a 6x rewind — a 3x makes sense, 6x is unnecessary.

Here’s where the costly mistakes happen. Pick chalk that washes away too soon and you re-snap all day. Pick a permanent color where it’ll show later and you’ve stained a finished surface for good.
All chalk lines are semi-permanent — eventually they all wear away — but the industry has aligned around a numbering system. The levels run like this: 1 wipes away, 2 is standard temporary use (same day), 3 is hi-vis color (1-3 days), 4 is semi-permanent and weather/wear-resistant (3-7 days), 5 is permanent or “weatherproof” (more than 7 days), and 6 is ultimate or dye, almost pure colorant.
The difference between a line that lasts and one that doesn’t is pigment density. Level 3 and especially Levels 4 and 5 have a high dye-to-carrier ratio, providing a richer, longer-lasting color that’s less impacted by the environment. In wet, windy, or high-traffic conditions, or when the chalk line won’t be seen — footers, wall layout, roofing — more permanent colors are rising in popularity, because a line that lasts is preferable to one that cleans up easily.
Color isn’t just preference, either. Contrast of chalk color to surface color matters — blue on gray concrete stands out much less after a few days than red, for example. And mind what comes next: if you’re painting over the lines, make sure you choose a color that won’t bleed through.

That table comes straight from how these colors behave: blue is considered the best color for general use, contrasting well on metal, plastic and wood, and it’s a temporary color ideal for indoor use where the surface will later be visible. White powder has less bleed-through with coverings like paint or wallpaper, is extremely visible on a dark surface, and blows off easily. Red works well on all materials but is permanent, so be particular where you mark. Yellow is great on metal, plastic or brick but doesn’t show on wood, and it’s permanent. Black is formulated for high visibility and superior adhesion, resists clumping, is waterproof for outdoor use, and the line is permanent. Fluorescent contrasts well on a range of surfaces and won’t wash away in rain, making it good for exterior work — but it’s semi-permanent, so don’t use it where it’ll be visible later.

Chalk lines handle long straight runs. For labeling cuts, anchor points, and quality-control marks, you reach for a marker, crayon, soapstone, or an inkline — and the surface decides which.
Soapstone is the old standby for layout. It leaves a visible, erasable line on many substrates and works well for straight lines and temporary layouts on dry surfaces, but on very wet work or highly porous stone, visibility and durability drop quickly. It excels in dry layout on smooth surfaces — dry, smooth concrete and clean, dry metal — but if the surface is wet or porous, consider another method.
Paint pens earn their keep where soapstone fades. Paint pens provide visible lines that can stay legible in wet conditions. They aren’t foolproof, though. Paint pens offer more visible, moisture-resistant lines suitable for wet conditions but may require care to ensure legibility. Watch them on green concrete and harsh surfaces — paint markers can bleed on freshly poured concrete and may fade on highly alkaline surfaces.
Then there’s the chalkline-versus-inkline question for marks that need to stick. Chalklines excel on porous materials like wood, concrete, or brick, and are great for temporary markings or quick reference lines. But they’re more prone to smudging and can be easily washed away by rain or moisture. Inklines flip that. Once the ink dries, it becomes resistant to smudging, fading, and water damage, which makes inklines ideal for outdoor applications or projects that require long-lasting markings. They also offer better visibility, especially on darker surfaces or in low-light conditions, with crisper lines.

For laying brick or block, the line is everything. A mason’s line is the single most important tool for ensuring a wall is straight and true, and professionals know that not all lines are created equal. Skimp here and you’ll see it three courses up. A cheap line sags in the middle, guaranteeing a bowed wall, and a weak line frays and snaps against the sharp edges of a concrete block, forcing you to reset everything.
The big decision is braided versus twisted. Braided lines resist stretching and unraveling, which helps maintain the high tension required to prevent sag. Braided nylon resists unraveling and has significantly less stretch — pull a 60-foot run tight and it stays tight, and that minimal sag is critical for keeping a level course from one end of a long wall to the other. Twisted line trades some of that for visibility. When visibility trumps all else, twisted line shines — its construction often lets fluorescent pigments pop more vividly than a braided line, making it easy to see in overcast conditions or against dark materials. The catch: twisted lines are generally more susceptible to stretching and fraying, so they’re best suited for smaller projects. For heavy-duty work, 18-gauge is a common twisted-nylon choice.
Setup technique decides whether that good line does its job. Offset the line from the face of the wall by a small, consistent distance, usually about 1/16 to 1/8 inch — this keeps the masonry unit and mortar from disturbing it. Pull it hard: the line should be under enough tension to be twanged like a guitar string, which minimizes sag over the span. On long runs, the line still wants to droop. Even a tightly pulled line can show a slight catenary sag, so masons place a small piece of wood or plastic — a “trig” or “twig” — beneath the line at the midpoint to lift it back to level and keep the center from drooping into a wall that “smiles.” As you go up, move the line blocks up the corner leads to the next course height in precise increments, typically following the 3/8-inch mortar joint thickness.

Most chalk-line frustration is technique, not the tool. Load it correctly and it pays you back.
To load for the first time, pull all the line out of the reel, fill it with an ounce of chalk — about a tablespoon — then wind the string back in while tapping the reel often, running the string through the chalk to coat it. Top it off as you go: re-coat every 20 to 30 feet.
Snapping is a six-step move. Secure the hook on the far end — loop it around a nail, screw or tack, or use the claws. Extend the string toward you and keep it taut. Press down on the tip of the chalk box to hold it in place, pinch the string at the halfway point, and lift it about four to six inches off the surface. Keep the line taut, then quickly release it — it snaps down and leaves a straight chalk residue.
Working solo? Put a pin or nail in the object to give the hook a landing place, make a small slit in the workpiece to hold the line, or use tape to hold the hook if you don’t want a permanent mark.
Blurry line means too much chalk. Stretch the string out in the air and give it a pluck or two to shed the excess for a sharp line, or snap two or three times in succession for a clear but heavier line in the same spot. And to stretch a single load further: some can coax 4-6 usable strikes out of one load by raising the line two inches for the first strike and an additional inch for each strike after.
One last thing on storage. Storing the box inside a toolbox keeps the dry chalk from getting damaged by moisture. If it does get wet, let the string dry before reeling it back in, then open the box and clean out any caked chalk before refilling with fresh.
