How to Pick the Right One for Your Project
Paint & FinishThe single decision that makes or breaks a sprayer purchase: matching the type to the job. Get that right and you’ll lay down a finish a brush can’t touch. Get it wrong and you’ll fight thin coverage on a big wall or chase overspray across a cabinet door.
Here’s the plain answer. The three common types are airless, HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure), and pneumatic sprayers. HVLP units use high volume, low pressure technology to atomize material into fine particles for a smooth, professional finish. Airless machines go the other direction — brute force and speed. Use HVLP for fine finishes like cabinets, trim, and furniture. Use airless for large-scale work like exterior siding, fences, and whole-room walls, where high pressure of 1,500 to 3,000 PSI covers surfaces rapidly.
For Montana builders, that distinction matters more than most places. The big exterior jobs — siding, fences, decks, barns, sheds, garage doors — are exactly the large-surface work airless was built to knock out fast before a weather window closes.
HVLP. Best tool for control. HVLP sprayers are great for small to medium projects, using high volume, low pressure technology to atomize materials into fine particles for a smooth, professional finish. The trade-off is honest: HVLP excels at creating a fine finish and has better transfer efficiency than airless, meaning more paint ends up on your target rather than as fine droplets in the air. But they don’t muscle through thick coatings the way an airless does. There’s a wide selection of these sprayers, varying in adjustability, ease of use, and power level. Good fits: small decks, rooms, furniture, cabinets, trim, crafts, and décor.
Airless. The workhorse for coverage. Airless sprayers are great for medium to large projects. They pump paint through a pressurized hose and fan miniscule droplets to evenly coat the surface. They’re generally more powerful to handle thicker paints and primers, and spray faster with more gallons per minute to get large projects done quickly. Where they shine: home exterior, fence, deck, barn, interior walls and ceilings, and unfinished rooms. The cost of that speed is overspray — they aerosolize more material than HVLP, which means more masking discipline.
Pneumatic / air-assisted. The route for small detail work. Pneumatic sprayers use compressed air to apply paint for a smooth, even finish, and are good for small to medium projects. Unlike airless or HVLP sprayers, these require a separate air compressor. They could be a great option for small projects like shelves, cabinets, or furniture. Typical use: furniture, cabinets, trim, and automotive.
The short version for thick material: airless is what you’d want for large renovation projects like whole rooms or houses, because it handles latex primers and paints without thinning. HVLP is the better option if your main use is small projects where fine control and the finest finish is needed — but they don’t handle thicker paints as well as an airless.
Buy for the work you actually do. Handheld cup-fed units handle small, occasional tasks. Turbine HVLP or cart and stationary airless rigs are what you want for recurring medium-to-large jobs because they support longer hoses and steady pressure.
Annual volume is the spec most people ignore and shouldn’t. The Wagner Control Pro line spells it out:

The Control Pro 150 runs a .55 HP HEA pump that sprays unthinned paints, primers, and stains directly from the can or bucket, with a 0.29 gallons-per-minute flow rate, a 25 ft hose, max operating pressure of 1500 PSI, and is designed to spray up to 175 gallons per year. Step up and the Control Pro 170 uses a .60 HP HEA pump, a 0.33 gallons-per-minute flow rate, a 30 ft hose, an all-metal spray gun, and is designed to spray up to 300 gallons per year. If you paint more than a couple big jobs a season, the 170’s higher rating and metal gun earn their keep.
On the HVLP side, speed is the selling point. The FLEXiO 3500 sprays coatings 10X faster than a brush and paints an 8×10 wall in as little as 5 minutes, with a powerful X-Boost turbine that sprays unthinned latex paints, primers, stains, and sealers directly from the can. Not sure you’ll use it enough to own one? Rent first. A contractor-grade unit lets you try out spraying before buying. These things can lay down tons of paint — though the main caveat is that it’s hard enough to get even, thorough coverage without the added pressure of a daily rental clock ticking as you work.
Tip size decides finish quality and whether the machine works with your coating at all. The rule of thumb: use a 0.009 to 0.011 inch tip for stains, and 0.013 to 0.021 inch for thicker paints.
Fan width follows the same logic. A 515 tip produces a 10 to 12 inch fan for painting large areas like walls and ceilings. A 211 or 312 shoots roughly 4 to 6 inch fans for moldings. Both Control Pro units ship with a 515 — a 515 HEA spray tip with a 10-inch spray pattern, ideal for latex paints.
Thinning depends entirely on the machine. HVLP paint usually gets thinned 10 to 20 percent, while airless models can often spray thick latex directly from the can. Wagner’s X-Boost turbine HVLP units skip thinning too — they pull unthinned paints and stains directly from the can, including latex paints, primers, solid stains, and sealers, eliminating the need for thinning.

Mask everything. Anything in the room — and adjoining rooms if they aren’t sealed off — will be covered in a fine layer of aerosolized paint particles, so make sure all surfaces, including the floors, are covered. And tape it down hard: the spray has enough force to blow heavy drop cloths and cardboard around if they aren’t fixed in place.
Prime before you load paint. Flush the pump and lines with water first — place the suction tube in a bucket of water and prime until liquid flows out of the relief tube, then switch to spray. After shooting about a half gallon into the empty bucket, it’s ready for paint. Then dial in pressure on a test surface. Adjust to a medium pressure and test spray onto a masked surface, raising it just high enough that the fan gives even coverage with no lines along the edges. Higher pressures aerosolize more paint and waste material, so operate at the lowest pressure that produces an even fan.
Build the finish in layers, not one heavy pass — multiple light coats beat one thick run that drips. And mind your work order: spray light colors before dark to cut down on cleaning between.
Cleanup isn’t optional, and it isn’t quick. Plan 20 to 30 minutes for a thorough pump, gun, and filter clean, then reload with pump storage fluid so the unit’s ready next time.
One hard safety line that bears repeating: airless sprayers shoot liquid at pressures high enough to cause severe injuries, so never touch the tip of a charged gun or spray at a body part.
