How to Choose the Right Primer for Your Paint Job

Primer is the coat that does the unglamorous work. It seals porous surfaces, grips slick ones, hides old color, and locks down stains so they don’t bleed through your topcoat. Skip it on the wrong surface and you’ll watch your paint flake, crack, or blister inside a season. Grab the wrong type and you’ll either overpay for muscle you don’t need or come up short against a stain that keeps ghosting through.

The Kilz line — the most common primer family on the shelf — sorts cleanly by two questions: how bad is the stain, and what surface are you sticking to. Answer those two and the right can mostly picks itself.

What Primer Actually Does

Four jobs, and most primers handle some combination of them.

Sealing comes first. Porous surfaces like concrete, new wood and drywall — even flat paint — can soak up a lot of paint, costing you time, money, and paint. Prime them and you get more even color and sheen, a professional-looking finish, and you fill the pores so you need less topcoat.

Adhesion is the second job, and it’s where shortcuts cost you. Poor paint adhesion causes some of the biggest paint problems — flaking, cracking or blistering. Priming first helps paint stick to almost any surface, including slick, glossy ones, aluminum, vinyl, PVC, ceramic tile and glass block that ordinary paint won’t grip.

Third, hiding color. Unlike stains, color doesn’t leach or bleed through paint, so covering it with primer is all that’s needed. It works when the hiding power of some paints runs out — handy for painting over bright or dark colors and cutting down the number of topcoats.

Fourth, blocking stains and odors so they stay buried. That’s the job that separates a light all-purpose primer from a heavy-hitter.

Matching the Primer to the Problem

Here’s where the buying decision lives. The line is built around stain severity and the surface you’re tackling.

For everyday repaints with light-to-medium staining, the all-purpose tier handles it. KILZ 2 All-Purpose is a fast drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stainblocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance and very mild odor. It blocks medium stains including minor water stains, rust, grease, ink, pencil and felt marker. Enhanced hiding makes it good for changing colors and cuts down the coats of paint needed. Use it on interior and exterior woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal and properly prepared glossy surfaces, under or over water-based or oil-based paints. Not on flooring.

Step up to the premium tier when the stains get worse or you want more hide. KILZ 3 Premium is a fast drying, low odor, very low VOC, water-based primer-sealer-stainblocker with excellent adhesion and a mildew resistant coating that makes it good for moisture-prone areas. It blocks most medium to heavy stains caused by water, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker and grease. Its thicker high hiding formula covers surface imperfections and preps the surface better for painting.

When you’re dealing with the ugly stuff — fire, flood, smoke, or wood that won’t quit bleeding — go to the severe-stain primers. These are the pros’ choice for stains caused by fires, floods, persistent pet or smoke stains, soot and charring, plus tannins from woods like cedar and redwood that create difficult bleeding stains, and major water, rust or ferrous stains. The data points to KILZ Restoration (water-based interior) and KILZ Original (oil-based) for these jobs. Tannin bleed matters in log and cedar country — and there’s plenty of both across the western valleys.

Then there’s the surface problem that has nothing to do with stains: slick stuff that nothing wants to stick to. That’s the adhesion primer’s whole reason to exist. KILZ Adhesion is a water-base, modified-acrylic primer formulated to bond to tough-to-paint surfaces, reducing or potentially eliminating the need for sanding dense, glossy surfaces including Kynar, PVC, vinyl, Formica, glass, tile, glazed brick, chalky paints, glossy finishes, fiberglass and metals. If you’ve ever tried to repaint a glossy laminate or a stainless surface, you know why this one earns its place. Moisture and Mildew Rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens, basements, laundry rooms — anywhere humidity swings hard. Montana homes are built tight and insulated heavy, so interior air exchange runs low and moisture lingers in those rooms. A mildew-resistant primer matters there.

A kitchen-and-bath formula is built for exactly this. KILZ Kitchen & Bath is a water-based primer-sealer-stainblocker made for high humidity, moisture and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms. Its enhanced mildew-resistant film protects the primer from mildew growth, and it blocks most medium to heavy stains including felt marker, grease, ink, pencil, tannin and water stains. It’s fast drying, low odor, very low VOC, cleans up with soap and water — and is not recommended for floors. The premium tier carries the same mildew resistance, which is why it doubles as a moisture-area option.

One thing the can won’t do for you: kill existing mold. Mildew and mold are common in damp areas, and painting over them is a temporary fix. Clean the mildew and mold off the surface before priming and painting, and let it dry completely first. Then pair it right — choose a topcoat with similar protection, like a mildew resistant paint, for best results.

Application and the Temperature Catch

This is where Montana’s calendar bites. Most of these primers are water-based, and they should only be applied if surface, air and product temperatures are between 50° and 90°F. That’s a real limit on exterior priming during a short warm season — once nights drop into the 40s, water-based won’t cure right. Oil-based formulas push the low end down further, which is part of why they still earn shelf space for cold-weather and severe-stain work.

Dry times are quick when conditions cooperate. At 77°F and 50% relative humidity these dry to the touch in 30 minutes and recoat after 1 hour. Don’t bank on that in the shoulder seasons, though — lower temperatures, higher humidity, poor ventilation or heavy application can significantly increase dry and recoat times. Plan spring and fall projects with extra cushion.

Coverage runs 300 to 400 sq. ft. per gallon depending on application method and surface porosity. Tools are standard: brush with a high quality nylon/polyester, roll with a 3/8 to 1/2-inch nap on smooth surfaces or 1/2 to 3/4-inch on semi-rough or porous, or airless spray. These tint with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon — tint to a lighter shade than the topcoat. One field tip on heavy stains worth following: after priming, test for bleed-through by applying topcoat to a small section. If the stain bleeds through, apply a second coat of primer and test again before doing the whole area.

Sizing the Can and Prepping the Surface

Buy to the job. KILZ 2 comes in quarts, gallons and fives. KILZ 3 Premium also comes in quarts, gallons and fives. Kitchen & Bath is gallons only, and Adhesion comes in quarts and gallons. A quart handles trim and patch work; gallons and fives are for walls and whole rooms.

Prep determines whether any of this performs. All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold and mildew, loose or peeling paint, rust and other foreign matter. Two specifics catch people out. New masonry must be allowed to cure at least 30 days before priming. And on glossy surfaces, scuff sand thoroughly before priming for maximum adhesion — even though the adhesion primer is built to reduce that need. And the one rule that runs across the whole line: none of these are meant for floors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a primer, or can I use a paint-and-primer-in-one? Prime when you’re sealing a porous surface, sticking to something slick, hiding a big color change, or blocking a stain. Those four jobs are what a dedicated primer is built for. Sealing porous surfaces also stretches your topcoat by filling the pores, so it saves paint over the long run.

What primer sticks to tile, glass, or laminate? The adhesion primer. Just keep it off floors and anything sitting in standing water.

Can I prime outside in cold weather? Water-based primers need surface, air, and product temps between 50° and 90°F. Below that they won’t cure properly. Oil-based formulas extend the low end down to around 35°F, which is why they hang on for cold-season exterior work. Either way, cool temps and high humidity stretch dry and recoat times well past the 30-minute and 1-hour marks.

What’s the best primer for a bathroom or basement? A mildew-resistant formula is what you want.
