How to Choose Between Solid, Finger-Jointed, and Primed Trim

Pine molding is the workhorse of interior trim. Affordable, light, easy to machine, and it takes stain or paint without a fight. It’s a versatile, budget-friendly interior trim option, and the first decision is simple: choose solid pine if you intend to stain the wood to highlight its natural grain. Want paint-grade trim instead? Go finger-jointed.

That’s the whole buying decision in one sentence. Everything else is detail.

Use finger-jointed pine for paint-grade projects; it consists of shorter, clear wood pieces glued end-to-end, offering superior stability, fewer defects, and lower costs for long runs. On a long baseboard run, that stability matters. Primed pine moldings are a paint grade product made by trimming defects from common grade lumber to make short lengths of clear lumber, which are then fingerjointed into longer lengths and manufactured into moldings — a procedure that helps reduce the tendency of the piece to twist or warp.

The catch with finger-jointed stock is telegraphing. In some cases, joints between the individual pieces will telegraph through the painted finish due to minute differences in the swelling and shrinking of the individual pieces of wood. Back-priming the material will reduce any moisture movement after installation, minimizing problems with telegraphing. Back-prime it. Cheap insurance, especially in a climate that swings from bone-dry winters to damp shoulder seasons.

Solid, Primed, and Premium Primed: What Separates Them

Solid pine is the stain-grade choice. A traditional softwood species offering natural grain and versatility, commonly used for interior trim and moldings where a classic wood appearance is desired. If the grain is meant to show, this is what goes up.

Primed pine is the paint-grade default, and the factory coating does the prep work for you. A coat of primer is applied by machine, and final finishing requires applying one or two top coats of additional primer or paint as desired. Pre-priming at the mill is designed to be less expensive than painting by hand, and allows you to paint with your own choice of oil, lacquer, or acrylic based products.

Premium Primed is the upgrade worth knowing about. Premium Primed Pine products have three coats of factory applied primer for an ultra-smooth surface, virtually eliminating visible joints and grain. No more than one finish coat of paint is needed in most cases.

Against MDF, pine earns its keep on the saw. Primed Pine and Premium Primed Pine is lighter and easier to cut and install than MDF, and they have a tendency to hold sharper edges found in intricate molding profiles and are less prone to chip than MDF moldings. MDF has its place — an engineered wood product known for its smooth surface and uniform density, an excellent choice for interior applications such as baseboards, crown molding, and casing, offering superior machinability and consistent results. But pine is the lighter, sharper-detail option, and primed pine moldings usually cost less than the stain grade equivalent because less expensive wood is used in the manufacturing process.

Going hardwood instead? Plan ahead. A job with hardwood trim may also require profiled moldings such as baseboard, chair rail, or crown, and custom hardwood moldings require a substantial lead time and a setup fee to make the cutter knives. Poplar, maple, and oak all show up in trim work, but none of them install as fast or as cheap as a primed pine run.

Profiles and Sizes for Each Application

Pine trim covers every standard joint in a room — floor, ceiling, wall, window and door, trim, caps and stops. Match the profile to the job:

Base shoe moldings cover the gap between baseboard moldings and finished flooring surfaces, and also add a finished look to taller baseboard moldings. Quarter round does similar duty. For knotty pine work, casing and baseboards are available in 8 foot lengths.

Building or finishing a log home? The trim system runs on D-Trim. The 2”x 6” D-trim works great for door and window casing as well as baseboards, and custom shaped log trim can span a larger width between cathedral windows or doors that are spaced apart. For interior applications there are 2×6 and 3×4 D-Trim for quarter log siding, and 3×6 and 4×4 D-Trim for half log siding.

Western Building Center carries a 3/4 x 3/4 triangular chamfer strip — useful for breaking edges and filling corner gaps where a square molding won’t sit clean.

Installation and Finishing

Order extra and let the wood settle before you cut a single piece. Account for 10 to 15 percent extra material for waste, and always acclimate wood indoors for 48 hours before installation to minimize warping. In Montana, where indoor air runs dry all winter, that acclimation step keeps joints from opening up after install.

For the cuts: use a miter saw for clean corner cuts, and a 18-gauge brad nailer to attach trim, as it leaves smaller holes that are easier to fill. Inside corners are where the pros separate from the amateurs — for inside corners, create a coped joint using a coping saw for a seamless fit. Outside corners and casing get mitered. Cut trims to length and angle, typically 45° at corners for tight joints.

Finish in order. Fill nail holes, sand, and caulk all gaps before painting or staining. On finger-jointed stock, back-prime first to keep those joints from showing.

A word on where pine doesn’t belong. Avoid using pine in high-moisture areas like bathrooms, as it may swell or develop raised grain. There’s a workaround with primed stock, but only if you seal it right: it can be used in areas of limited moisture such as bathrooms provided it is thoroughly primed and sealed on cut edges. Skip that step and the end grain wicks moisture every time.
