How to Choose Trim That Holds Up

Alder offers a smooth, consistent grain ideal for fine molding with easy stain absorption, while soft maple provides greater hardness and durability, making it better for high-traffic areas. Soft maple’s denser texture resists dents more effectively, whereas alder excels in detailed carving and a warm finish.
Put plainly: maple is the workhorse, alder is the artist. Both woods provide cost-effective solutions, with alder preferred for its rich color tones and soft maple favored for strength and versatility in residential and commercial molding projects.
In a Montana home, that durability question carries weight. Entry and mudroom baseboards take a beating from boots, snow, and gear all winter. That’s maple territory. A formal dining room that wants a stained cherry look without the cherry price? That’s where alder earns its keep.
The Janka numbers tell the whole story. Alder sits soft, maple sits hard, and that single spec drives most of the decision.

Maple also splits into two camps. Hard maple (sugar maple) runs harder still, while soft maple covers red, silver, bigleaf, and box elder. Both woods accept stains well, but alder’s consistent grain allows for a more even finish, whereas soft maple’s variation can create a richer, more natural look.
On workability, the lighter wood wins for detail. Alder offers excellent workability due to its fine, even grain, making it easy to cut, shape, and finish with minimal effort and clean edges for detailed molding. Soft maple, while slightly harder than alder, remains highly workable but may require sharper tools and slower feeds to achieve smooth cuts and intricate shapes.
For anything that gets bumped, kicked, or leaned on, maple is the call. Soft maple offers greater hardness and density compared to alder, making it more durable and resistant to dents and wear in molding applications. Alder’s softer texture provides easier workability but compromises strength and long-term resilience under heavy use. Choosing soft maple ensures enhanced structural integrity and longevity for high-traffic or impact-prone molding installations.
Walk up to the counter knowing the sub-types. You can’t order the right material if you don’t know it exists.
Alder comes in two grades. Wood Vendors offers both Superior Grade and Knotty Alder moldings. Superior is free of knots (may have some pin-knots) with a consistent light tan-red color. It takes any color of stain very well and can mimic the look of walnut or cherry. Knotty alder runs the other direction — it features natural knots and character markings for a rustic or traditional look, ideal for interior trim projects where visual texture is desired.
Maple divides between hard and soft. Soft maple stains more evenly and costs less, while hard maple brings maximum dent resistance. Maple is a dense hardwood with a smooth, uniform grain, ideal for interior moldings requiring strength, durability, and a refined finish.
Finish choice often decides the species. For stain work, the two behave differently. Alder wood is highly suitable for paint applications due to its smooth grain and uniform texture, which allows for excellent paint adhesion and a flawless finish. Soft maple, while also capable of holding paint, is better suited for stain applications because its subtle grain patterns absorb stains evenly, enhancing the natural wood appearance. For molding projects requiring durable paint coverage, alder is preferred, whereas soft maple is ideal when a rich, stained look is desired.
The standout staining trick belongs to alder. Alder molding is ideal for interior trim and cabinetry, valued for its smooth grain and excellent staining properties that mimic cherry and mahogany woods.
For paint-grade runs, there’s a third option worth knowing. Primed alder finger-joint engineers real wood for consistency. Alder finger-joint is harder and more dent-resistant than poplar, more stable than pine and other softwoods, has no pitch bleed or resin issues common with pine, and offers real-wood strength that MDF can’t match with a smooth, uniform surface ideal for painted finishes. Where does it earn its place? Interior base, casing, and trim; door and window casings; chair rail and crown moldings; high-traffic residential interiors; premium production housing; and commercial millwork. It commonly comes in 3/4-inch thickness across widths from 3.5 to 11.25 inches in 16-foot lengths, delivering fewer dents during handling, cleaner paint with less prep, more stable trim with reduced twist and cup, and better fastener holding than MDF.
Both species cover the full trim package. Base, casing, crown, chair rail, quarter round, shoe, cove — the standard lineup. Hard maple, for instance, shows up in cove rounds, quarter rounds, shoe rounds, bead and V-joint wall treatments, chair rail detail, colonial and ogee and contemporary base, colonial casing, and 2-step or ogee crown.
A representative profile gives a sense of the dimensions in play. The MC36 Lancaster is a classic apron molding featuring a 1 3/16” x 3 3/16” profile, crafted in alder, maple, northern red oak, and poplar. Its traditional and colonial styling adds depth and refinement beneath window stools, ledges, and architectural transitions. Stock lengths vary by supplier — clear alder moldings commonly run in 7-to-10-foot lengths, while profiles like the Lancaster come in lengths up to 17 feet.
Material is sold by the linear foot. Moldings sold per linear foot are subject to lengths on hand. Order the total quantity of LF desired and an order equaling that total will be assembled.
Western Building Center’s knotty alder offerings include a casing, a base, and an open trim profile: WM413 knotty alder 11/16 x 3-1/4 double-bead casing, AK603 knotty alder 5/8 x 5-1/4 base, and AK953 knotty alder 1-1/4 open trim — all sold by the linear foot.
This is where Montana’s climate stops being theoretical. Heated winters run dry, summers run dry-but-different, and wood moves with the swing. Two habits prevent the gaps and splits that generate callbacks.
First, buy stable stock. Source kiln-dried lumber at 6 to 8 percent moisture content so the trim holds steady through the seasonal humidity changes between a heated winter house and a dry summer one.
Second, let it adjust. Acclimate the wood at least one to two weeks in the actual room where it’s going up — not the garage, not the truck. In low-humidity interior winters, skipping this step is how miters open up by spring.
For the cut and fasten: measure accurately, use a miter saw for precise cuts, and secure with a nail gun. With hard maple’s density, pre-drill near board ends to avoid splitting. If you’re milling your own profiles, use a jointer and planer to ensure stock is flat and square before routing, and always test profiles on scrap wood first. One more thing worth a respirator and good dust collection — maple dust is fine and can be irritating.
Which is harder, maple or alder? Maple, by a wide margin. Alder rates about 590 on the Janka scale while soft maple rates about 950, and soft maple’s denser texture resists dents more effectively. Hard maple runs harder still. For high-traffic baseboards, stair parts, and entry trim, maple is the durable choice.
Can alder really look like cherry or walnut? Yes. Superior grade alder has a consistent light tan-red color, takes any color of stain very well, and can mimic the look of walnut or cherry. That’s the main reason finish carpenters reach for it on stained trim packages where budget rules out the real thing.

Does hard maple blotch when stained dark? It can. Soft maple is the safer pick for even stain absorption, since its subtle grain patterns absorb stains evenly, enhancing the natural wood appearance. When dark stain on hard maple is the goal, a wood conditioner before staining helps the color lay down uniformly.
What grades does alder come in? Two main ones. Superior grade is free of knots (may have some pin-knots) with a consistent light tan-red color, while knotty alder carries natural knots and character markings for a rustic or traditional look.
Why acclimate the trim before installing? Wood moves with humidity, and Montana’s interior winters run dry. Letting boards sit one to two weeks in the install room lets them reach equilibrium with the space, which keeps miter joints tight and prevents the gapping that shows up months after the job’s done. Pairing that with kiln-dried stock at 6 to 8 percent moisture content gives the most stable result.
