A Buyer's Guide to Paint-Grade Interior Trim
Doors & MillworkMDF casing is the budget-friendly, paint-grade choice for interior trim in dry rooms. Medium Density Fiberboard is a composite panel manufactured from wood fibers and synthetic resin binders bonded together under heat and pressure, forming a homogeneous board with consistent properties in each direction. That uniformity is the whole point. No grain, no knots, no surprises.
Here’s the single rule that matters most: keep it dry. MDF can swell or soften if exposed to water. Once that happens, it’s done — you don’t dry it back out. So MDF earns its place in living rooms and bedrooms, and solid wood earns its place anywhere moisture lives. More on that below.
For paint-grade work, MDF is hard to beat. The surface is flat, smooth, uniform and free of knots and grain. MDF is easily shaped into almost any form. High quality, clean, sharp contours and edges can be achieved in a wide range of profiles. And because MDF’s uniform composition and smooth, tight surface allows finishes to be applied directly to the surface — there are no finger joints so it is easy to create an even finish. No joints telegraphing through your paint after a Montana winter of heating cycles. That’s a real advantage.
One thing to settle up front: paint or stain. If the trim will be stained rather than painted, wood is the only appropriate option. MDF cannot be stained. If you want a stain look in MDF, most MDF molding comes preprimed, and veneer wrapped or prefinished MDF products are available when stain finishes are needed. But raw MDF takes paint, not stain. Period.
When ordering, ask for material made to standard. Whenever possible, specify MDF manufactured to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A208.2. This standard includes provisions for physical and mechanical properties and limits the amount of formaldehyde emissions. Many North American MDF products are certified for formaldehyde emissions by the Composite Panel Association or other third-party certification agencies.
MDF doesn’t stop at casing. MDF millwork is available as casing, crown, jambs, baseboard, chair rails and many other profiles. Plan the whole package at once. Moldings are commonly available in lengths up to 16 feet, and jambs are available in door height lengths. Those long lengths matter on a long wall — fewer pieces, fewer joints to fuss over.

The reason MDF cuts so well for tight profiles comes down to the material itself. MDF is easier to cut cleanly because it does not splinter. This makes it forgiving for detailed profiles and tight joints. One caution from the trade: very fine edges aren’t its strong suit. Trims with more delicate edges — beaded casings, for instance — the little beads break or chip, and don’t glue on quite as nicely as real wood.
This is the buying decision that saves you a callback. MDF belongs in dry, controlled rooms. Living rooms and bedrooms — these dry, low-impact spaces are ideal for MDF trim. Painted baseboards, crown molding, and casings made from MDF hold up well and maintain a clean appearance. Same goes for painted wainscoting, panel molding, and long hallway runs where impact risk stays moderate.
Now the no-go list. Bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and laundry rooms often experience humidity or occasional water exposure. Wood trim handles these conditions better than MDF. In Montana terms, that means mudrooms, entries where snowmelt pools off boots, and basements. Reach for wood there. The trade has been blunt about this for years — don’t recommend MDF base in bathrooms, laundry rooms and other places that might get wet.
Impact is the other factor. Wood is stronger and more impact-resistant. MDF is more prone to denting and damage from hard contact. And it doesn’t grip fasteners the way wood does — compared to solid wood, MDF does not hold fasteners as strongly in high-stress areas. High-traffic spots where trim gets bumped and kicked? That’s a wood job.
There’s a middle option for damp-but-not-wet situations. MDF moldings with properties that enhance moisture resistance should be considered for use in bathrooms and for baseboards where the construction is slab-on-grade. While the most common adhesive for MDF is urea-formaldehyde, other adhesives or additives may be used to provide special properties such as reduced thickness swell or enhanced bond durability.
Smart builders don’t pick one material for the whole house. Many smart renovations use MDF for painted trim and wood where needed most. MDF in the bedrooms and living areas, wood in the wet zones and stained features. That’s how you get value without warranty headaches.
MDF moves with humidity, and Montana interiors swing hard between dry winter heat and damper shoulder seasons. Interior humidity can fluctuate between 40% to 80%, and under these conditions, MDF molding can move by 0.3%. Small, but enough to open a joint if you skip the prep.
Acclimate it first. Store MDF products on site for a minimum of 24 hours or longer in the heated environment in which they will be installed. This will help them become acclimatized to the moisture conditions at that location. Some manufacturers push that window longer — products should be climatized for a period of up to 72 hours prior to installation. During climatization, the material should be stored on some type of dunnage or 2x4s in the areas where installation will occur. It is important that MDF products are never stored lying directly on a concrete floor, even in a garage. That last line matters in Montana shops and basements. Concrete wicks moisture straight into the board.
Fasten right. Best results are obtained using 15 to 18 gauge brad and pin nails. Air pressure should be 90-110 psi to countersink the nail 1/16” into MDF moldings. Placement counts: nail 1/4 inch from edges and 1 inch from ends. And leave the floor a little room — MDF molding should never be installed directly to floor surfaces; leave a 3/16” to 1/4” reveal.
Don’t overthink the miters. It is not necessary to fasten MDF miters together as MDF does not shrink enough to open the miter. A nail through the face of a mitered corner against the wall should hold the joint closed. In fact, placing a spline or fastener into the upper miter edge of a casing head and leg joint is not necessary and may split the casing.
Joint long runs and inside corners properly. When two pieces of MDF molding need to be joined due to the length of the span, it is recommended to use either a coped joint or a compound mitered joint. To beat that 0.3% movement, apply a bead of carpenter’s glue and a brad nail through the top of the joint down to keep the miter together, and finish it off with a pliable caulk (for example, “Big Stretch” by Sashco Sealants).
Seal every cut end. This is the step amateurs skip and pros never do. Care should be taken when cutting or shaping to avoid damage to the primed surfaces. Cut ends should be sealed with a primer or a PVA adhesive to minimize moisture uptake. A raw cut end is an open door for moisture.
Finishing is easy because the primer’s already on. MDF molding is pre-primed with a specially formulated gesso coating, which acts as a primer. The coating is formulated to accept either a water or an oil-based topcoat. Before the topcoat, a light sand with a 220 grit or higher sandpaper or sponge should be done. One heads-up for water-based primers: they may produce “fiber raise” with any significant contact with water.
Can MDF casing be stained? No. If the trim will be stained rather than painted, wood is the only appropriate option. MDF cannot be stained. For a stain look, veneer-wrapped or prefinished MDF products exist, but raw MDF is a paint-only material.
Why can’t I use MDF in a bathroom or basement? MDF breaks down with sustained water contact. MDF can swell or soften if exposed to water. For bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, wet basements, and entryways, solid wood or a moisture-rated material is the right call. Once MDF swells, it doesn’t recover.
How long does MDF need to acclimate before installation? At minimum, store MDF products on site for a minimum of 24 hours or longer in the heated environment in which they will be installed. Some manufacturers recommend up to 72 hours. Store it flat, on dunnage or 2x4s, never directly on concrete.

Does MDF dent easier than wood? Yes. Wood is stronger and more impact-resistant; MDF is more prone to denting and damage from hard contact. That said, painted dings are easy to fix with filler and touch-up paint. For high-traffic, kick-prone areas, wood is still the better pick.
