A Buyer's Guide for Painted Interior Trim
Doors & MillworkMDF base is the budget-friendly, paint-ready baseboard for dry interior rooms. Medium-density fiberboard is a composite panel manufactured from wood fibers and synthetic resin binders bonded together under heat and pressure, forming a homogeneous board with consistent properties in each direction. No knots. No grain. The surface is flat, smooth, uniform and free of knots and grain.
That uniformity is the whole point for painted trim. High quality, clean, sharp contours and edges can be achieved in a wide range of profiles. MDF’s uniform composition and smooth, tight surface allows finishes to be applied directly to the surface. There are no finger joints so it is easy to create an even finish. No finger joints telegraphing through your paint a year later.
Here’s the catch, and it’s a big one. MDF is paint-grade only. MDF cannot be stained. If you want a stained look, veneer wrapped or prefinished MDF products are available when stain finishes are needed. But the bare board is for paint, full stop.
Most of it comes ready to finish. Most MDF molding and millwork comes preprimed. That saves a coat of labor before you even hang it.
Western Building Center carries an OG (ogee) profile MDF base — a 1/2-inch by 5-1/4-inch run sold by the linear foot. The ogee curve is a classic, clean profile that paints up sharp.
This is the decision that separates a baseboard lasting decades from one that swells and fails. Get the grade wrong for the location and you’ll be tearing it out.
Standard MDF lives in dry rooms. MDF can swell or warp when exposed to water or high humidity. It’s best suited for interior spaces that are dry, such as living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Dining rooms too.
For anything that might see water, step up. MDF moldings with properties that enhance moisture resistance should be considered for use in bathrooms and for baseboards where the construction is slab-on-grade. That slab-on-grade note matters in this part of the country — basement and ground-level floors pull moisture from below, and standard MDF will wick it right up.
Keep an eye on moisture content. The moisture content of the MDF molding should be maintained below 16%. Once standard MDF gets wet, you’re not nursing it back. Painted MDF trim holds paint very well and resists visible grain movement. However, once damaged by moisture, it cannot be easily repaired.
The pros who install miles of this stuff are blunt about it. MDF base has no business in bathrooms, laundry rooms and other places that might get wet. It’s not appropriate for a bathroom baseboard. For bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and laundry rooms, wood trim handles these conditions better than MDF.

MDF earns its keep on the right jobs. It rates high for base and crown specifically. Run it for crown, most base, chair rail backers, shadow and bed moldings, some window trim, and casing backers. It handles well, copes evenly, and paints up beautifully. For crown especially, MDF beats pine or poplar. In addition to that, it’s cheaper.
The weak spot is impact. Wood is stronger and more impact-resistant. MDF is more prone to denting and damage from hard contact. It nicks and dings easily, so it’s the wrong call for door casings, chair rails and such.
Watch the delicate profiles. Trims with more delicate edges — beaded casings, for instance — are not appropriate for MDF. The little beads break or chip, and don’t glue on quite as nicely as real wood. And mind your outside corners — outside corners of base board that are going to get banged are the spots that take the abuse.
The good news on dents: they’re fixable. If you keep some of the primer and paint, a little Bondo and a touch of paint will make it good as new. Painted dings are easy to fix.
MDF behaves differently from wood at the saw and the gun. The process protects the finish.
Acclimate first. MDF moves with humidity just like solid wood. Like solid wood, MDF changes dimensionally with changes in relative humidity. It is important to store MDF products on site for a minimum of 24 hours or longer in the environment in which they will be installed. This will help them become acclimatized to the moisture conditions at that location. Many installers give it the full 48. This matters more here than most places — expect some expansion and contraction of MDF moldings, and interior humidity can fluctuate between 40% to 80%; under these conditions, MDF molding can move by 0.3%. Install it too wet and the miters open up as it dries.
Mind the conditioned environment. One detail builders forget in this climate: heat and air conditioning, which is not in use at time of installation, can seriously affect the amount of expansion and contraction MDF moldings will have. Take this into account at the time of installation. Account for the home’s actual conditioned environment before fastening anything.
Store it right. MDF products must be stored inside and in a horizontal position. Specifically, do not store directly on floors, especially bare concrete. Concrete wicks moisture straight into the board.
Cut clean and protect your lungs. Use a sharp carbide blade. A triple-chip carbide finishing blade produces a beautiful chip-free finish. Crosscut carbide blades also produce acceptable results. Rip or steel blades are not recommended. MDF dust is fine and gets everywhere — sawing MDF generates fine dust, so it is best to connect table saws to a vacuum system. When working with MDF, wear at minimum a half-mask respirator that is NIOSH approved and has a HEPA filter rating, side-shielded safety glasses, and a long-sleeve shirt and gloves.
Fasten it. Most installers run a nailer. Best results are obtained using 15 to 18 gauge brad and pin nails. Air pressure should be 90-110 psi to countersink the nail 1/16” into the molding. Drive into the framing every 16 to 24 inches on center, the same as you’d space any base. And don’t cut it dead tight — allow about a 1.5 mm gap to avoid the joint from being too tight.
Seal the cuts. Every fresh cut is exposed fiber that drinks moisture. Cut ends should be sealed with a primer or a PVA adhesive to minimize moisture uptake.
Caulk and finish. Inside corners and the top edge get caulk — the right kind. Inside corners should be caulked using any good quality, paintable latex caulking. Silicone caulking is not recommended. Silicone won’t take paint. Then top it off: the super smooth, primed surface is ideal for finishing and will accept any good quality alkyd or latex finish. High or semi-gloss finishes provide a more durable finish and are easy to clean. Before the topcoat, lightly sand any putty-filled nail holes or caulked joints with a 220 grit open coat paper or steel wool for best results.
Buy extra. Order more than your wall footage. Figure 10 to 15% over to cover miters, mistakes, and the odd damaged piece.
Can MDF baseboard be stained? No. MDF cannot be stained. It’s a paint-grade product. If you need a stained appearance, look to veneer-wrapped or prefinished MDF, or use wood instead.

Why does MDF need to acclimate before installation? Because it moves with humidity. If MDF moldings are installed with high moisture content, subsequent shrinkage may lead to the appearance of paint cracking or gaps at joints and mitres. Unwrap it and stack it indoors in the room where it’s going for at least 24 to 48 hours so it settles to the home’s actual moisture level before nailing it up.
What happens if MDF base gets dented? On painted MDF, a dent is fixable. If it gets a chunk broken off, Bondo and paint will fix it to invisibility. Keep leftover primer and paint for touch-ups. Just know MDF is more prone to denting and damage from hard contact than solid wood, so think twice about it in spots that get kicked or bumped hard.

Does installing MDF base require special tools? Standard trim tools, with two cautions. MDF is easily cut and installed at the job site using standard woodworking tools — a hand saw, miter box or small table saw, hammer or nail gun, nail set and tape measure. The two musts: a sharp carbide blade for clean cuts, and a HEPA-rated respirator because MDF dust is fine and abundant.
