What They Are and When to Use One
Doors & MillworkA spring door hinge is a self-closing hinge — a full mortise or half-surface hinge with a coil spring mechanism housed in its barrel. When the door is opened, the spring compresses and stores energy. When released, that energy drives the door back to the closed position. No overhead closer arm. No floor mechanism. The closing force lives inside the hinge itself.
Here’s the honest version. A spring hinge is the budget-friendly, low-profile way to make a lighter interior door self-close. It belongs on lower-traffic openings. It does not belong on a wind-loaded exterior entry or a heavily used main door. Get that distinction right and the rest of the decision is easy.
Most spring hinges adjust. Most commercial spring hinges have adjustable tension, allowing the installer to tune closing speed and force for the door size and weight. The adjustment usually happens through a socket in the barrel that takes a hex wrench. And here’s the retrofit advantage worth knowing: a 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 full mortise spring hinge fits the same door and frame prep as a standard commercial butt hinge, which is one reason it appears frequently as a retrofit solution or a low-profile alternative to an overhead closer on lighter openings.
Spring hinges come in a few distinct configurations, and the right one depends on how the door swings and what it weighs.
The two basic swing types: single-acting, where the door swings in one direction only — available in full mortise and half-surface mount, most common in commercial applications. And double-acting, where the door swings in both directions and the spring closes it from either side. Double-acting comes in full mortise, half-surface, and clamp-flange versions, used on kitchen pass-through doors, double-swing corridor doors, and similar applications. Double-action hinges — also known as saloon hinges or café door hinges — feature two independent spring-loaded pivots that allow a door to rotate a full 180 degrees, 90 degrees in each direction. They’re widely used for restaurant kitchen doors and partition doors where bi-directional traffic is needed.
Beyond the standard butt-style hinge, a few other configurations exist. Surface mounted spring hinges attach directly to the outer surface of a door frame, which simplifies installation and suits situations where frame thickness or design prohibits recessing — practical for gates, screen doors, and utility doors. Horizontal spring pivot hinges handle heavy or oversized doors. They’re usually installed in pairs — one at the top and another at the bottom — integrating a tension spring mechanism aligned with the door’s edge. For continuous spans there are spring loaded piano hinges, also called continuous hinges, which run the entire length of the door or panel.
For sizing, the rule of thumb tracks the door’s use. Residential doors typically use 3.5-inch hinges; standard commercial doors use 4-inch or 4.5-inch.

For commercial and fire-rated lines, the size and finish range runs wider. A representative commercial spec sheet (Imperial) lists a full mortise design built with durable steel construction and adjustable spring tension controlled with an included adjustment tool. It’s a three-knuckle full mortise hinge offering flexibility for various door sizes and weights, with multiple hinges installed on a single opening for optimal performance. These meet ANSI/BHMA standards and are UL listed for fire-rated doors. Sizes run 3.5” x 3.5”, 4.0” x 4.0”, or 4.5” x 4.5”, with steel thickness of 0.085” (2.2mm) or 0.129” (3.3mm) and finishes in USP, US3, US4, US10B, US15, US19, US26D, and US32D.
This is the core buying decision. Spring hinges fit specific situations and fail in others.
Where they earn their place: when a door needs to self-close reliably and the conditions do not demand the control features of a full door closer. On lower-traffic rated openings — storage rooms, janitor closets, light-use stairwell doors — spring hinges can satisfy the self-closing requirement where a full closer would be over-specified or aesthetically intrusive. They also shine on double-acting openings where a door must swing both ways, such as kitchen entries — standard overhead closers are not designed for double-acting swing. And on retrofits — when a closer arm has been damaged, removed, or never installed on a rated door that still needs self-closing function, spring hinges can be installed in the existing hinge mortises without additional door or frame prep.
Now the limits. A spring hinge does not have the control or backcheck features that a door closer offers. Specifically, it lacks closing speed control — a closer has a dedicated closing-speed valve and a separate latching-speed valve, while a spring hinge has no hydraulic sweep control, so the door moves at a rate governed by spring tension and door mass. It has no backcheck — the cushion that prevents the door from slamming into the wall or stop as it approaches. On high-frequency or high-traffic openings, this matters. And it can’t do delayed action or hold-open, which ADA-compliant openings often benefit from for wheelchair or cart access.
The Montana wrinkle is temperature. Hydraulic closers compensate for seasonal changes through valve adjustment. Spring tension is a fixed mechanical property; once set, it cannot be fine-tuned as easily across changing conditions. With a 70°F living room and a -20°F January morning on the other side of an exterior door, that fixed tension can feel inconsistent across seasons. So the rule holds: for high-frequency openings — main building entries, heavily used corridor doors — or for exterior doors subject to wind load, a full overhead closer from a line such as Hager, Norton, PDQ, or Corbin Russwin is the appropriate specification. Spring hinges on those openings will wear prematurely and may not maintain reliable latching under load.
On accessibility, be straight with yourself. Spring hinges often fall short of ADA requirements — their inability to control closing speed can make them unsuitable for general accessibility purposes. For settings requiring ADA compliance, door closers are the preferred choice.
This is one of the most legitimate reasons to spec a spring hinge. NFPA 80 requires a self-closing device on every labeled fire door. A spring hinge can satisfy that on the right opening.
The garage-to-house door is the classic Montana example — most homes here have an attached garage. Garage-to-house doors are required to be self-closing in most jurisdictions under NFPA 80 as a fire barrier. A spring hinge is a clean way to meet that.
If you go this route, verify the rating on the product. Commercial fire-rated spring hinges are UL Listed (A Label Fire Doors) and meet ANSI/BHMA K8107 and NFPA 80 (3 Hour Fire Rating). Don’t assume — check the label.
The single most common mistake here is using too few hinges. Installing a single spring hinge on a commercial door will almost certainly result in uneven closing force, door sag, and early failure. Never do it.
The sizing guidance follows door height: doors up to 60 inches tall need a minimum of 2 hinges, with at least 1 being a spring hinge. Doors 61 to 90 inches tall need 3 hinges total — using 2 spring hinges on taller doors is common to achieve consistent closing torque. Placement matters too. When mixing spring hinges with standard hinges on the same door, position the spring hinges at the top and bottom hinge locations to distribute closing force evenly. The center hinge, if present, is typically a non-spring unit. Pairing with ball-bearing hinges reduces friction and helps the door close cleanly.
Spring hinges install full mortise — same prep as a standard butt hinge. Use the standard full mortise installation method — thread-cutting screws in metal frames, proper relief holes drilled before final installation. A word of caution: these arrive pre-loaded with tension, so handle them carefully during install.
Then you dial it in. Most commercial spring hinges include a tension adjustment mechanism — typically an adjustment socket in the barrel — that lets installers increase or decrease spring force after the hinge is mounted. The field sequence: set initial spring tension with the door hanging and closed, then open the door to approximately 90 degrees and release — observe the closing speed and whether the door latches reliably. If the door stalls before it latches, add tension. If it slams, back it off. Adjust until it closes firm and latches every time.
Is a spring hinge the same thing as a door closer? Not quite. Both automate door closing, but a spring hinge uses a tightly coiled spring inside the hinge barrel to generate tension. As the door opens, the spring tightens; upon release, the stored tension pulls the door closed. A door closer adds hydraulic control — adjustable speed, backcheck, and delayed action — that a spring hinge can’t replicate.
How many spring hinges does one door need? At least two, never one. Doors up to 60 inches tall need a minimum of 2 hinges with at least 1 spring hinge; doors 61 to 90 inches tall need 3 hinges total, and using 2 spring hinges on taller doors is common. A single spring hinge causes sag and early failure.
Can a spring hinge be used on a fire door? Yes, on the right opening. NFPA 80 requires a self-closing device on every labeled fire door, and commercial spring hinges are commonly UL Listed for A Label fire doors and meet ANSI/BHMA K8107 and NFPA 80 with a 3-hour fire rating. Verify the specific product carries the rating before you install it.
Will a spring hinge work on an exterior door? For a wind-loaded exterior entry, a full overhead closer is the better call. For exterior doors subject to wind load, a full overhead closer is the appropriate specification — spring hinges on those openings will wear prematurely and may not maintain reliable latching under load. The fixed spring tension also can’t adjust for the big temperature swings between a heated interior and a cold exterior.
How do you adjust the closing speed? Through the barrel. Tension is adjusted using a common allen wrench. When the door is opened the internal spring is compressed; upon release, the accumulated tension closes the door automatically. Tighter tension closes harder and faster; less tension closes gentler. Tune it until the door latches reliably without slamming.
