How to Match Geometry, Size, and Pin Type
Doors & MillworkThe single detail that ruins more hinge jobs than any other is corner geometry. Square corner hinges have sharp 90-degree leaves, contrasting with radius corner hinges that feature rounded edges. Get that wrong and the leaf won’t seat flush — you’re left with a gap, a hinge sitting proud of the mortise, or field modification that can void a fire label. None of those are cheap to fix after a door is hung.
So before anything else: match the hinge to your existing door prep. Match the hinge to your existing door prep to avoid costly rework or fire code non-compliance. Square corners go with mortises chiseled by hand on wood doors and frames. Rounded corners — usually a 5/8-inch radius — go with router or CNC preps common on hollow metal commercial doors.
A field check settles it fast. Pull one hinge, lay the leaf flat. Sharp right angles mean square corner. Curved corners mean radius — measure the curve, and it’ll typically run about 5/8 inch. Some hinges split the difference and carry both a square corner and a 5/8-inch radius on the same leaf, which is why you’ll see listings described that way.
Size tracks door weight and where the door hangs. Standard residential sizes are 3.5 inches for interior doors and 4 inches for exterior doors. For heavier slabs, for 1 5/8” to 1 3/4” thick doors, a 4” x 4” hinge is the industry standard for proper weight distribution and alignment.
Then there’s the mechanism. Three types cover most door work:
Ball-bearing. A ball-bearing hinge is equipped with precision ball bearings between the knuckles to significantly reduce friction during operation. This design provides smoother door movement, eliminates squeaking, reduces metal-to-metal wear, and extends hinge lifespan under repeated daily use. These earn their keep on heavy and high-traffic doors. This hinge is the best choice for larger and heavily used entry doors. In addition to reducing friction, this hinge also promotes soundlessness and smooth opening and closing.
Spring (self-closing). The tension is adjustable and the door closes on its own. Spring hinges, also known as self-closing hinges and adjustable tension spring hinges. The adjustable tension spring in the hinge automatically closes the door helping to minimize any harmful gas fumes from getting into your home or commercial property. That’s not just convenience — 4” x 4” spring closure hinges are required on fire doors and doors that separate the home from the garage. In Montana, where attached garages run cold and often unheated, that home-to-garage door matters. Commercial-grade spring hinges can carry serious certification: UL Listed for fire door applications, packaged with mounting screws, and some are BHMA Certified Grade 1 for 1 million cycles.

Pin type is a security decision on exterior doors. When replacing existing hinges, the most reliable method is to match the exact size, quantity, and corner geometry of the hinges already installed — but the pin is where you make a real choice. Non-removable hinge pins are used primarily on exterior doors (or any door that needs to be locked) that has hinges that are visible from the outside. A non-removable pin (NRP) keeps somebody from popping the pins and lifting the door off. For interior service and easier hanging, removable pins win — the removable hinge pin allows for easier door removal during installation or service.
For material, exterior and moisture-exposed openings call for stainless. A high grade, Non-Removable Pin (NRP), rust resistant, stainless steel pin. Utilizes template screw hole pattern for use with wood or metal doors. Plain steel does fine inside; 304 stainless steel handles the wet better outside. Installation comes down to mortising and screws. Installation requires mortising — cutting a recess into the door and jamb so the leaf sits flush. Position matters: mark positions 7 inches from the top and 11 inches from the bottom, centering any additional hinges in between. For fasteners, use standard #10 screws (3/4-inch for the jamb, 1-inch for the door) for secure mounting. One pro move on replacements: consider using extra-long hinge wood screws to help correct door alignment issues and ensure secure anchoring into the door frame stud. These are specifically manufactured to help align your doors and insure that the hinges will hold in place.
