How to Match the Corner and Pick the Right One

The whole game with a 1/4″ radius hinge comes down to one thing: the corner. Hinge radius is the curve at the corner of a hinge leaf — the two common types are 1/4″ (sharper, modern look) and 5/8″ (rounder, more common in the US). The key rule: always match the hinge radius to your existing door mortise, or the door will misalign or bind.

Get that wrong and you’re not saving any time. Wrong hinge radius means one thing: re-chisel the frame, redo the install, restart the schedule. So before ordering anything, figure out what’s already cut into your jamb.

The fastest way to check is a coin. The coin test: a dime matching the corner means a 1/4″ radius, a quarter matching the corner means a 5/8″ radius. Want to be precise? Measure the distance from the original corner point to where the curve begins — that confirms 1/4″ or 5/8″.

A 1/4″ radius reads cleaner and squarer than the rounded 5/8″ standard. A 1/4″ radius hinge has a tighter, more squared-off look that feels modern, while a 5/8″ radius hinge has a rounder curve that matches most pre-rounded jambs and is generally easier for retrofits. The two profiles exist because of how they’re made. When doors and frames are mortised, the cutting tool defines the radius — CNC machining creates tight 1/4″ corners, while job-site routers naturally produce a 5/8″ radius.

Matching the Mortise — The Make-or-Break Decision

Radius isn’t a style preference once a door’s already prepped. It’s a fit requirement. The radius must exactly match the mortise cut into the door and frame, as an incorrect fit will cause wobbling or misalignment.

Don’t try to force one into the other. The mortise must already match the 1/4″ radius profile before installation — do not seat a 1/4″ radius hinge in a 5/8″ radius mortise, as the corner will gap and the leaf will not sit flush. Mixing radii to dodge a re-mortise is a bad trade. Mismatching radius causes misalignment from incompatible mortise sizes, operational problems like the door binding or sagging, wobbling or poor fit in the cutout, and aesthetic inconsistencies on high-end projects.

One more thing on swapping hinges. Screw holes won’t line up brand to brand. Hinge manufacturers have never standardized the location of their screw hole patterns — every manufacturer puts their screw holes in a slightly different place, so when you replace hinges you will almost certainly have to do some filling and redrilling. The exception is architectural door hinges, which are built to a standardized template for each size.

Sizes, Bearings, and Materials

Size follows the door. 3.5-inch hinges are standard for interior doors, while 4-inch or larger hinges are typically required for heavier exterior or commercial doors. For the heavier slabs and solid-core doors common around here, step up. For high-traffic or heavy doors, use ball-bearing hinges to reduce friction and wear. Material matters in a climate that swings from bone-dry to damp. Steel is the everyday choice. Installation Basics

Once the radius matches and the size is right, hanging is straightforward. Confirm the corner with that dime first, then check seating. Check the mortise depth — the hinge leaf should sit flush with the door or frame face.

Work methodically: position the hinge and mark screw locations with an awl or sharp pencil, pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting and ensure screws drive straight, then fasten the door leaf first and the frame leaf next, checking for flush seating after each screw. A field trick for replacements — swap hinges one at a time while the door is closed to maintain alignment without removing the slab, and consider longer screws on the jamb side to reinforce the door against sagging.
