The choice comes down to three things: the type that matches how your door or gate moves, the size that fits the gap, and the finish that survives where it lives. That last one matters most in Montana. Outdoor hardware on a gate or outbuilding takes weather and freeze-thaw abuse, and the finish is what decides whether it lasts a decade or rusts solid in two winters.

This is where most buyers get tangled up. The styles aren’t interchangeable — each one solves a different problem.
Safety hasp is the rigid, non-swivel workhorse. It includes a rigid non-swivel staple, and for security, all screws are concealed when the hasp is closed. That concealed-screw design is the whole point — nobody backs the screws out while it’s locked. Built for interior or exterior use, easy installation, and manufactured from hot rolled steel for durability, it secures doors, cabinets, boxes, and trunks.
Swivel safety hasp does the same job but the staple swivels, which helps on lids and applications where a fixed staple won’t line up.

Bolts cover the lighter latching and security jobs. The barrel bolt is the most common.

Here’s the part that separates hardware that lasts from hardware that streaks rust down your siding. Finishes run black, brass, galvanized, plain steel, zinc-plated, and stainless steel. For anything outdoors, the finish is not a cosmetic choice.
