Three sliding-door systems get lumped into one category, and buyers mix them up constantly. Box rail. Pocket door kits. Bypass hardware. They solve different problems and carry wildly different weight ratings. Get the system right first — then worry about length and brackets.

Here’s the short version. Box rail is the heavy-duty track, designed for use on doors weighing up to 450 lbs. Pocket kits hide a door inside the wall. Bypass hardware lets two doors slide past each other on a lighter rail. Match the system to the door and the opening, and the rest falls into place.

Three Systems, Three Jobs

Box rail is the workhorse. The Plain Box Rail (N105-726) is made from galvanized steel for durability, for exterior applications, coated with WeatherGuard protection to withstand harsh weather conditions and prevent corrosion. It’s built for barn-style sliding doors — the heavy ones on shops, sheds, and garages. The rail is carefully formed to give an even tread to hanger wheels.

Pocket door kits are a complete system that disappears into the wall. The National Hardware Pocket Door Installation kit contains everything needed to hang doors up to 125 lbs, classified as Grade 1 by ANSI/BHMA standard A156.14. Sizing is specific: designed to fit doors 80in high, 1-3/4 in wide, and in openings between 24in and 36in, this pocket door kit is adjustable to fit almost any doorway. It works with what you’ve already got — with steel studs, the pocket door hardware installs easily behind any common wall construction, including plaster, wood paneling, and other drywall material, while ensuring a solid wall. Door thickness range runs 3/4” to 1-3/4” thick.

Bypass hardware is the lightweight option for closets and similar spots where two doors slide past one another. It’s rated far lower than box rail. The N343-079 set carries a safe working load of 60 lb, and the N343-129 set is suitable for use with 3/4” to 1-3/8” thickness doors, also rated at 60 lb safe working load. Don’t ask bypass hardware to do a box rail’s job. The numbers don’t support it.

Both bypass sets share the same practical features: doors can not accidentally jump the track, wheels never need lubrication, doors can be hung or removed without detaching hangers, and the rail offers steel track with a decorative finish. The N343-079 adds a door guide that provides smooth operation and allows up or down adjustment of doors, and a dial-action hanger for easy vertical adjustment.

Calculating Rail Length and Brackets

This is where most box rail orders go wrong. The rail has to be longer than the opening — the door needs somewhere to slide to. How much longer depends on the door system.

For single or bi-parting doors, total rail length runs double the opening width. An 8-foot opening needs 16 feet of rail. For bypassing doors, the math shifts to opening width plus one-and-a-half times the opening — so that same 8-foot opening takes about 20 feet.

Plain box rail mounts to the header on brackets spaced every 2 feet. Figure brackets as rail length divided by two, plus one. Sixteen feet of rail comes out to nine brackets. The Plain Box Rail uses separate single brackets (N104349) or splice brackets (N104380) — they aren’t built into the rail itself.

Two hangers per door, sized to the door’s weight. That part doesn’t change regardless of system.

Material and Corrosion — Why Galvanized Matters Here

In a climate that swings from summer heat to deep winter freeze, an exterior sliding door’s hardware lives a hard life. Galvanized steel is the baseline for weather resistance, and the WeatherGuard coating goes further — it’s 3x more resistant to corrosion than standard zinc-plated hardware.

The detail worth knowing for outbuilding and ag-door work: it’s formulated to withstand the harshest weather conditions and stand up to the corrosive effects of pressure treated lumber. Rural Montana runs on pressure-treated framing for shops, barns, and equipment sheds. Standard zinc plating corrodes against that lumber over time. WeatherGuard holds up far better in corrosion resistance than standard zinc-plated hardware.

Building the System — Components You’ll Need

Box rail isn’t one part. It’s a kit you assemble from the right pieces, and the door won’t run if the hangers, rollers, and accessories don’t match.

The track itself: 8’ Box Rail Door Track (N105726). The brackets to hang it: the single bracket (N104349) and the single splice bracket (N104380) for joining rail sections. For the door, there’s the Flexible Box Rail Hangers (5491). Round it out with the accessories — a barn door stay roller, a galvanized steel rail end cap, the flush ring pull (N203752), and a barn door bumper (N100834).

A flush ring pull keeps the handle from catching when a door slides tight against a wall. The bumper and end cap stop the door at the end of its travel. Stay rollers keep the bottom of the door from swinging away from the wall. Small parts, but skip them and a heavy door rattles and binds.
