How to Pick the Right Size, Grade, and Type

Builders, ranchers, and DIYers reach for it because it routes around obstacles where rigid pipe won’t, costs little, and connects to standard barbed fittings with nothing more than a clamp.

Picking the right one comes down to three decisions. Match the inside diameter to your fittings. Choose enough wall thickness — or reinforcement — for the pressure you’re running. And pick a grade that survives the medium and the temperature. Get those three right and you’ll skip most of the failures that send people back to the counter.
Here’s the honest truth about the material itself. PVC tubes offer rubber-like flexibility, and flexible PVC maintains strength and pliability even at low temperatures, down to approximately -45°C. That makes it workable in cold weather. But there’s a catch worth respecting in Montana: PVC tubes may become brittle in cold weather and soften in hot weather, so choosing the right PVC type for the environment ensures performance. For unheated runs or outdoor lines that see real winter, grade choice matters more than people think.
One more material note before sizing. Standard PVC is preferred for cold-water and general applications, whereas chlorinated PVC (CPVC) offers higher temperature resistance, making it more suitable for hot-water systems. Don’t run a hot line on standard vinyl and expect it to hold up.
Tubing gets specified two ways at once — inside diameter and outside diameter. The ID is what carries the flow and what your fittings size to. A 3/4” barb fits 3/4” ID tubing. The OD tells you the overall footprint, which matters for clamps and clearance.
Sizes run small to large. Outside diameter ranges from 0.125 in to 3.500 in, inside diameter from 0.062 in to 3 in, and wall thickness from 0.031 in to 0.250 in, with lengths of 10, 50, and 100 ft.
Now the part that trips people up: bigger isn’t stronger. Pressure rating drops as the bore grows and climbs with thicker walls. The reinforced braided data shows it plainly — at 1/4” ID the working pressure is 250 PSI rated at 70°F, while 2” ID drops to 75 PSI. Same material, very different limits.

Wall thickness is the other lever. On plain clear vinyl, all tubing in that section carries a 20 psi working pressure rated at 70°F, with walls running 1/16”, 1/8”, and 3/16” as diameter increases. That tells you something important: unreinforced clear vinyl is a low-pressure product. Don’t push it.
And every one of those numbers is a 70°F figure. Working pressures are rated at 70°F, and higher temperatures will result in lower working pressures. Heat the line, lose pressure rating. Same goes for the safety math — listed working pressures are based on short-term burst using a 4-to-1 safety factor.
Clear non-reinforced vinyl is the general-purpose choice. It’s an all-purpose solution for safely transporting liquids, gases, and light solids, offering maximum flow with minimal buildup. Good for low-pressure water, air, drainage, and dispensing lines where you want to see the flow.
Reinforced (braided) vinyl is where you go for pressure. It’s built with polyvinyl chloride tubing reinforced with polyester textile yarn for added strength. The braid carries the pressure the bare wall can’t. Operating range is defined too: a temperature range between +25°F and +150°F, with higher temperatures resulting in lower working pressures, certified to ANSI/NSF 51 and ANSI/NSF 61.
Food and potable grades carry the certifications. Quality clear vinyl is FDA, USDA, USP Class VI, NSF 51, 3A, and UL compliant, making it suitable for medical, food-grade, and industrial uses. If it’s carrying drinking water, that NSF 61 rating is what you’re checking for.
Specialty options exist for tougher jobs. Black UV-resistant grades are made for the outdoors — black tubing adds greater UV resistance and does not promote algae growth, useful for outdoor applications, light-sensitive media, color coding of processing lines, and secondary containment. There are also non-phthalate compounds for food and beverage work and kink-proof vacuum-rated grades. Non-DEHP, non-phthalate formulations serve infant products, milk transfer, breweries, and wineries, while vacuum grades withstand full vacuum at room temperature with an extra-heavy wall.
Here’s the one hard limit to memorize. Vinyl and fuel don’t mix. Intermittent exposure to hydrocarbons such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel will cause premature hardening and failure of the tubing. For a cold-climate alternative on low-temp water and ag lines, polyethylene is worth knowing — linear low density polyethylene tubing suits low-temperature flexibility, with an operating range from -40°F to 125°F.
The stock runs both clear and reinforced vinyl, plus a poly option, in 50’ and 100’ coils. Clear vinyl sizes include 5/16” OD x 3/16” ID, 3/8” OD x 1/4” ID, 1/2” OD x 3/8” ID, 5/8” OD x 1/2” ID, 3/4” OD x 1/2” ID, 7/8” OD x 5/8” ID, 1” OD x 3/4” ID, and 1-1/4” OD x 1” ID. Reinforced vinyl runs from 1/2” OD x 1/4” ID up through 1-3/4” x 1-1/4”. There’s also medium-white poly tubing in 1/4” OD x .170” ID and 5/8” OD x 1/2” ID for low-pressure, low-temperature runs.
Start with the medium, then pressure, then temperature. Common uses cover a wide spread — water and chemical lines, oxygen and air lines, syrup and beverage dispensing, drainage, peristaltic pumps, refrigeration sight gauges, and vacuum systems.
Chemical compatibility is its own check. PVC is generally resistant to many acids, bases, salts, aliphatic solutions, and oxidizing agents, but it can be damaged by some solvents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and aromatic compounds — always check compatibility for the specific application. When in doubt, field-test before you commit a long run.
Clean cuts and the right fittings do most of the work. Flexible tubing can be cut to length with a sharp blade or hose cutter. For connections, use barbed fittings — plastic or metal inserts — secured with clamps for a leak-free seal. Size the barb to the tubing ID, not the OD.
Routing matters too. Avoid sharp bends so the line doesn’t kink and choke the flow. And before anything gets glued or clamped in place, treat the listed specs as a guide and confirm temperature and working pressure against your system, since field testing is recommended to find actual values in the application.
Does the barb size match the OD or the ID? The inside diameter. A 3/4” barbed fitting fits 3/4” ID tubing. Match the fitting to the bore, secure it with a clamp, and you get a leak-free seal.
Can vinyl tubing carry gasoline or diesel? No. Even intermittent contact with gasoline, kerosene, or diesel causes vinyl to harden prematurely and fail. Use a fuel-rated line for hydrocarbon transfer.
Why does bigger tubing have a lower pressure rating? Working pressure falls as the inside diameter grows and rises with thicker walls. In braided vinyl, 1/4” ID is rated 250 PSI while 2” ID drops to 75 PSI — same material, far less pressure capacity at the larger bore.
When do I need reinforced (braided) tubing instead of clear? Clear non-reinforced vinyl is a low-pressure product — many lines work around 20 psi. When you need real pressure, vacuum resistance, or chemical transfer, step up to braided vinyl, which is reinforced with polyester yarn and rated far higher.
Does temperature change the pressure rating? Yes. Pressure ratings are given at 70°F and drop as temperature climbs. Cold is its own concern — standard vinyl can turn brittle in cold weather, so pick a grade suited to the environment, especially on unheated or outdoor runs.
What grade do I need for drinking water? A grade certified safe for potable water — look for NSF 61. Food-grade clear vinyl that carries FDA, NSF 51, USDA, and similar certifications covers food and beverage work.
How do I keep a run from kinking? Avoid sharp bends and respect the tubing’s minimum bend radius. Route gradual curves rather than tight corners, and choose a kink-resistant or vacuum grade if the path forces tight turns.
