How to Choose the Right One (and Why a Towel Bar Won't Save You)

Here’s the distinction that matters most. One is designed to support body weight and improve safety. The other is designed only to hold lightweight items like towels. Grab bars and towel bars may look similar at first, but they are built for completely different purposes.
The simple decision rule: if the bar might ever be used for balance or support, it must be a grab bar. Anything else is gambling with a fall.
For Montana homeowners aging in place, caregivers, and remodelers adding bathroom safety, this is the upgrade that actually prevents injuries. Get the bar right, get the anchoring right, and put it where the hand reaches.
A towel bar feels solid when you give it a light tug. That’s the trap. Because they’re mounted to the wall and feel firm when lightly pulled, it’s easy to assume they can support more weight than they’re designed for. But under sudden pressure—like someone losing balance—they’re not built to hold up.
Under real-world force, towel bars do exactly what you’d expect from light-duty hardware. They pull out of the wall, bend under pressure, loosen over time.
The reason comes down to how each is built and mounted. Grab bars are installed using screws into wall studs or heavy-duty anchors designed for load-bearing use. Towel bars are typically installed with light-duty anchors, small brackets, minimal structural support. That difference is the whole ballgame.
And the failure happens at the worst possible moment. Lightly pulling on a towel bar does not reflect real-life safety conditions. A fixture may feel firm during a casual test but still fail under sudden or uneven pressure. A slip in a wet tub is fast and uneven, not a controlled pull.
If someone in the house is already grabbing a towel bar to steady themselves, that’s your signal. If someone is currently relying on a towel bar for support, it’s usually a sign that a grab bar is needed in that exact spot.
Bathroom wall space runs out fast. That’s where a combo bar earns its keep. These units integrate a true grab bar with a towel holder, so the thing people reach for is actually rated to hold them. One model runs about 23” wide, 6” high, 4” deep, with a 330-pound load capacity. The top bar works as a grab bar and the bottom bar as a towel bar. Bar diameter is 1¼”.
The folks who design these see the problem constantly. Towel bars fall off the wall because they’re being used to get up from the toilet or to step in the tub. Wall space in a bathroom can be limited, so why not have a sturdy grab bar and a towel bar in one.
In a bathroom, everything stays wet. That drives the material choice. Type 304 stainless steel (the 18-8 alloy) is the standard for grab bars because it resists rust in constant moisture. Durable, rust-resistant Type 304 stainless steel construction comes in designer finishes—polished chrome, brushed stainless, and oil rubbed bronze.
Wet steel is slick steel. A smooth bar does you no favors when your hand is soapy. That’s why a textured finish matters. On the ASI Series 3000 specification, for optional non-slip surface add suffix –P (peened). A peened surface gives the hand something to bite into when wet.
For a warmer, softer grip, vinyl-coated bars are the other route. One combination unit uses antimicrobial, warm and soft to the touch, superior non-slip grip—a 3mm thick antimicrobial vinyl coating. Stainless steel can feel cold and hard; vinyl coating trades the institutional look for comfort and grip without giving up corrosion resistance.
Grip diameter isn’t a preference—it’s a standard. Accessibility guidelines call for circular cross section grab bars with an outside diameter of 1¼ inches minimum and 2 inches maximum. Most decorative dual-purpose bars land right at 1-1/4” grab bar diameter, which meets ADA guidelines for easy gripping. Heavier-duty exposed bars commonly run a 1.5” tube.

Style follows function:
You can also get bars with integrated accessories built in—toilet paper holders, handshower holders, corner and shampoo shelves—so the safety hardware does double duty without looking like hospital equipment. The ASI bar offers a welded-on option: a toilet paper holder formed of 1/4” Ø solid SS 304 rod welded to the grab bar.
A grab bar rated for 500 pounds is worthless screwed into drywall with plastic anchors. The mounting carries the load. On the ASI specification, this is stated plainly: mounting to the wall is a critical part of the system to meet the strength requirement. To withstand the shear, tension or pullout, and torsion loads generated by the maximum loading, the fastener system must be adequately sized.
The load target is the number to build around. Accessibility code requires that bending stress in a grab bar induced by a 250-pound point load shall be less than the allowable stress for the material. Quality bars are rated well past that—dual-purpose decorative units carry 500 lbs weight capacity when properly installed. That capacity holds only on a sound mount: the maximum weight capacity applies if installed according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions, which state the mounting surface must be structurally sound.
Order of preference for anchoring:
Into studs. Always the first choice. The bar should be securely anchored to wall studs or appropriate backing to handle the load requirements for grab bar functionality. Combination units ship with mounting hardware supplied for wood stud installation.
Heavy-duty hollow-wall systems or back-up plates where no stud lands. Standard plastic drywall anchors don’t belong anywhere near a grab bar. One accepted no-calc method for shorter spans uses a back-up plate on the other side of the partition, with two through-bolts spaced vertically 2.25 inches minimum apart. The back-up plate shall be minimum 2 in. wide x 3.25 in., stainless steel, 16 gauge or thicker.
Tile? Drill through the tile and anchor into the structural substrate or backer board behind it—not the tile itself.
Two finishing details that get overlooked: the bar must stay put in its fittings, and the edges can’t chew up a hand. Grab bars shall not rotate within their fittings. And a grab bar and any wall or surface adjacent to it shall be free of any sharp or abrasive elements and shall have rounded edges.
A bar in the wrong spot doesn’t get used. Place it where the hand naturally lands.
Height. Horizontal bars mount 33 inches minimum and 36 inches maximum above the finish floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface. For children’s fixtures, that drops to 18 inches minimum and 27 inches maximum above the finish floor.
Clearance. Keep 1½ inches between the wall and the grab bar. The space between the grab bar and projecting objects below and at the ends shall be 1½ inches minimum. The space between the grab bar and projecting objects above shall be 12 inches minimum.
That 1½-inch gap isn’t arbitrary. Many people brace their forearms between supports and walls to give them more leverage and stability. The clearance is a safety clearance to prevent injuries resulting from arms slipping through the openings.
Location. Put bars where the slips actually happen. Common high-risk areas include stepping into or out of a shower or bathtub, standing up from a toilet, and turning or shifting weight on a wet surface. The trick is matching the bar to the movement: position them where the hand naturally reaches during those movements. If the bar isn’t within reach at the right moment, people tend to grab whatever is closest—which is often a towel bar.
Can I use a towel bar as a grab bar if it feels sturdy? No. Lightly pulling on a towel bar does not reflect real-life safety conditions. What diameter grab bar is easiest to grip? A round bar of 1¼ inches minimum to 2 inches maximum outside diameter meets accessibility guidelines. A 1¼” bar is the common comfortable grip for most hands.
What if there’s no stud where I need the bar? Don’t fall back on plastic drywall anchors. Use a heavy-duty hollow-wall fastener system rated for load-bearing use, or a back-up plate behind the wall. The bar should be securely anchored to wall studs or appropriate backing to handle the load requirements.
How do I mount a grab bar on a tiled shower wall? Drill through the tile and anchor into the structural substrate or backer board behind it. The tile itself carries no load—the framing or backing does.
Is stainless steel better than a coated bar? Both work in wet areas. Type 304 stainless steel is durable and rust-resistant. A peened stainless finish adds slip resistance, while a vinyl-coated bar runs warm and soft to the touch with a non-slip grip and a 3mm antimicrobial coating. Choose based on grip feel and look; both resist corrosion.
Will a combination grab bar/towel holder actually hold my weight? Yes, that’s the point of the design. The grab bar portion is engineered as a true load-bearing bar—one unit carries a 330-pound load capacity—and the towel holder is positioned to provide convenient access while maintaining the grab bar’s primary function of providing secure support.
