How to Pick the Right Size, Material, and Cap
Building MaterialsCloset bolts are the two fasteners that hold a toilet to the floor. The job sounds trivial. It isn’t. These fasteners are the sole mechanical anchors providing stability and downward force on the fixture, and that pressure is transmitted through the toilet’s porcelain base to compress the wax ring or sealing gasket, creating a watertight and gas-tight seal between the toilet and the drainpipe. Get the diameter, length, and material right and the toilet stays put for decades. Get it wrong and you’re looking at a wobble, a leak, or a cracked bowl.
Here’s the part most folks miss: a rocking toilet usually isn’t a bolt problem. More on that below. But first, the buying decisions that actually matter.
There are only two diameters to choose from. The question of toilet flange bolt size is primarily answered by two common diameters: 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch. The 1/4-inch diameter is a traditional size, still available and functional for many installations. However, the 5/16-inch diameter bolt is considered a modern standard, offering increased strength and stability. If you want the stronger mount, go 5/16”.
Length is where people get tripped up. Bolt lengths are generally 2 1/4 inches, though longer bolts, such as 3 1/2 inches, are available for situations involving thicker tile floors or double-flanging. Thick tile, an underlayment buildup, or a stacked flange eats up thread fast — measure before you buy.
The bolts themselves are T-head, designed for the job. The T-bolt design features a flat, rectangular head that slides directly into the track or slot of the toilet flange. This design simplifies the alignment process and provides a secure purchase against the flange material. They slot into the flange at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions, sit about 6 inches apart, and run parallel to the wall. A full kit gives you everything to finish: two T-bolts along with nuts, metal washers, and plastic or rubber washers, with decorative caps included as the final cosmetic touch to conceal the hardware.
Now the material question, which matters more in a Montana bathroom than people think. Humidity and a wet floor will eat a cheap fastener. Non-corrosive is non-negotiable. Brass is a traditional and highly corrosion-resistant option that does not rust — a major advantage in plumbing applications. It is a relatively soft metal, however, which can make it susceptible to stretching or stripping if significantly overtightened.
Stainless is the tougher option. Stainless steel, often 304 grade, provides superior strength. The anti-corrosive properties are inherent to the metal itself, meaning scratches during installation will not compromise its resistance, and it offers a higher tensile strength that resists breaking or deforming under stress.
Then there’s nylon, the no-rust answer. Solid plastic toilet bowl bolts exceed 1,100 lbs per bolt tensile strength, help prevent bowl breakage from overtightening, and are corrosion-proof 100% nylon. The corrosion point isn’t cosmetic. A corroded bolt can fail when attempting to remove the toilet for service, requiring the bolt to be cut and potentially damaging the flange. Caps are the part you’ll replace most. They get knocked off, lost, or broken, and there’s a style for every preference. The classic is a snap-on, like the 7115 white and 7116 bone bolt caps, with simple snap-on inserts that fit all brands. The downside of snap-ons is obvious — they pop off. The fix is a screw-on. The screw-on design ensures the caps won’t get knocked out of place and creates a water-tight seal.

Now the mistake that cracks more bowls than anything else: overtightening. Closet bolts don’t clamp like framing bolts. The goal is not to anchor the toilet immovably, but to stabilize it and compress the seal.
Do it in order. Hand-tighten the nuts until snug to evenly compress the wax seal without excessive force, then use a wrench slowly in an alternating pattern. That alternating motion matters: tightening one side a quarter-turn, then moving to the opposite bolt for a quarter-turn, ensures pressure is distributed evenly across the fragile vitreous china base.
A washer between the nut and porcelain is cheap insurance. Use a plastic washer between the nut and the porcelain to absorb some of the pressure and reduce the risk of cracking, and stop tightening as soon as the toilet is stable and no longer rocks. If it still rocks after that, do not keep cranking. Wobble Wedges level the toilet bowl and help reduce rocking, which may help prevent a broken wax seal — stackable and easily trimmed with a knife. Shim it. Don’t torque it.
This is the section that saves a repeat repair. A lot of “bad bolt” calls are really floor or flange calls. A lot of “toilet bolt problems” are really flange, floor, or installation problems. New bolts can help, but only when bolts are the limiting factor.
Run the quick test. If a toilet rocks, the bolts are often reacting to another issue: an uneven floor or tile lippage where the bowl touches in two spots and teeters, a compressed or failed wax ring, or a loose or damaged flange that moves with the bowl so the bolts never stay tight. The tell is simple: if you can snug the nuts and the toilet still moves, the bolts aren’t your main problem — shimming and fixing the flange and floor matter more than “better” bolts.
A bad flange dooms any bolt. Bolts depend on a solid flange at the right height and firmly attached to the floor. If the flange is cracked, sitting too low below the finished flooring, sitting too high, or not anchored to the subfloor, then new toilet flange bolts are like putting fresh lug nuts on a bent wheel. The pattern repeats in real life: homeowners replace bolts, crank them down to stop movement, then weeks later the toilet loosens again or the base cracks. The regret isn’t “wrong bolts” — it’s using bolts to force stability that should have come from the floor and flange.
Fit problems sink installs too. Extender or extra-length bolts are often required when thicker flooring or flange height makes standard bolts too short. And clearance is real: the bolt-to-wall rough-in is often 12 inches, but some bathrooms are 10 or 14 inches, which affects where the bowl lands over the bolts and how much room you have to work. Tight to the wall and you may not have room to slide washers on cleanly, room to tighten nuts straight, or room to fit decorative caps without rubbing.

The 1/4-inch is a traditional size, still available and functional for many installations, but the 5/16-inch is considered a modern standard, offering increased strength and stability for securing the toilet to the floor. If you want the stronger mount, choose 5/16”.
What length do I need? Standard is 2 1/4 inches. Longer bolts, such as 3 1/2 inches, are available for situations involving thicker tile floors or double-flanging. Measure your stack — tile, underlayment, and flange height — before buying, since a barely-long-enough bolt leaves no adjustment room.
Brass, stainless, or nylon? All three resist corrosion, which is what counts in a damp bathroom. Brass doesn’t rust but is relatively soft and can stretch or strip if significantly overtightened. Stainless steel’s anti-corrosive properties are inherent to the metal, so installation scratches won’t compromise resistance, and it offers higher tensile strength. Nylon bolts are corrosion-proof, exceed 1,100 lbs tensile strength per bolt, and help prevent bowl breakage from overtightening.
My toilet still rocks after tightening the bolts. Now what? Stop tightening — you’ll crack the bowl. A rocking toilet is often uneven floor or tile lippage, a failed seal, or a loose flange, and if you can snug the nuts and it still moves, the bolts aren’t the main problem. Shim it level with Wobble Wedges and address the flange or floor.
How tight is tight enough? Snug, not crushing. Hand-tighten first, then wrench in an alternating quarter-turn pattern to distribute pressure evenly across the china base — the goal is to stabilize the toilet and compress the seal, not anchor it immovably. Excessive torque can easily crack the porcelain. Add a plastic washer under the nut and stop the moment the rock disappears.
