How to Pick the Right Replacement

Nine times out of ten, the culprit is the fill valve — the part inside the tank that controls water coming in after each flush. Ballcocks, often referred to as float valves or fill valves, function as regulators of water flow into tanks and cisterns. For most homeowners, the answer is simple: grab a universal, adjustable-height fill valve. It fits the vast majority of residential toilets and it’s the easiest plumbing fix in the house.

Here’s how it works. After you flush, the water level drops. As the float descends, it triggers the opening of the valve. This action allows water to flow into the tank, refilling it to the desired level. Once the water reaches the predetermined level, the float ascends, signalling the valve to close and stop the inflow of water. Older designs used a hollow ball on an arm. Modern ones use a float cup or internal float. Same job, cleaner execution.
This is a beginner job. A toilet fill valve is a component located inside the toilet tank that regulates the flow of water coming into the tank from your water supply. You don’t need a plumber. You need an adjustable wrench, a bucket, and about an hour.
There are several mechanisms out there, and knowing the difference keeps you from buying the wrong thing.

For the overwhelming majority of repairs, skip the decision paralysis. A universal, adjustable-height valve covers about 90 percent of residential toilets. The fixed-height ballcock only makes sense if you’re restoring an antique. And if you’ve got a proprietary or high-end model, check with the manufacturer before you buy.

Wrong height or wrong connection is the most common buyer mistake. Telescoping units solve it. They adapt to most tank heights and use a standard 7/8-inch connection. To confirm what you’ve got, pull the lid: identify the type of toilet you have, which can be found by removing the tank lid and looking for a stamped number inside the tank, often on the back wall. The number may be etched on the porcelain or printed on a label.
For reference on the adjustable range, Fluidmaster’s PerforMAX line is typical. It features EZ-Twist shank height adjustment from 9 in. to 14 in. to fit more tanks. The kit version paired with a 2-inch flapper adjusts higher — the EZ-Twist height adjusts from 10” to 15” to fit most any toilet tank.
Now the Montana piece. Hard water and sediment are a fact of life across a lot of well and municipal systems here, and that buildup is what kills fill valves early. A serviceable valve with a sediment strainer earns its keep. The Korky 528 is built for exactly this: a strainer catches sediment in the water and allows the valve to be serviceable. That matters — if you have an older fill valve, internal debris build-up could be the cause for poor performance. With a Korky model, you can clean and service the fill valve. If you don’t have a Korky fill valve, you must replace the old valve.
The whole job runs about an hour and costs little. Turn off the water supply by rotating the shutoff valve clockwise — typically found on the wall behind the toilet or on the floor — then hold the handle down to empty the tank. Don’t skip the shutoff. You should turn off the water before replacing a toilet fill valve.
A few things that separate a clean install from a callback:
Setting the critical level is what stops siphoning and running. Adjust the water level adjusting screw until the float engages at the water level mark labeled inside the toilet, or one to two inches below the top of the overflow tube. Korky’s guidance for their internal-float design is slightly different: check that the water level mark on the fill valve is 1/2 inch below the top of the flush valve overflow tube. Korky fill valves have an internal float, so adjusting the height lowers the water level in the tank.
Last check before you button it up: ensure the float can move freely up and down without obstruction. Test by lifting the arm and seeing if the float hits anything. If there’s interference, rotate the fill valve slightly.
Fill valves are among the hardest-working parts in the bathroom. Each time you use the toilet the trip lever, flapper, and fill valve are operated. The flapper and fill valve are the parts most exposed to water and will be the first to wear out in most cases. Plan on swapping the fill valve roughly every four to five years — sooner if you’re on hard water.
Watch for the warning signs: constant running, slow refill, water levels that fluctuate, or odd noises from the tank. On hard-water systems especially, a slow refill often traces back to sediment. The most common cause is the chamber containing the float clogging from residue. This chamber has a small ball valve at its bottom, and it must empty in order for the float to drop and open the fill valve. On a serviceable valve, you clean it instead of replacing it — which is the whole argument for buying a serviceable one in the first place.
How often should a toilet fill valve be replaced? Replace your toilet’s fill valve every four to five years. Hard water and sediment shorten that window, so high-mineral systems may need it sooner.
Will a universal fill valve fit my toilet? Most likely, yes. A universal adjustable valve fits about 90 percent of residential toilets. Telescoping units adapt to most tank heights and use a standard 7/8-inch connection. To be sure, pull the tank lid and check the stamped model number inside before buying.
Can I replace a fill valve without shutting off the water? No. Turn off the water before replacing a toilet fill valve. Rotate the shutoff valve clockwise — it’s usually located on the wall behind the toilet or on the floor.
Why does my new valve cycle on and off by itself? Usually the refill tube. Install the 1/4” tube per instructions and use the clip that comes with it. Don’t just stick it into the overflow tube, or it will cycle on and off. If that’s not it, drop food coloring in the tank — if color appears in the bowl after a few hours, you probably need a new flapper.
Where should I set the water level? Set the float so it engages at the water level mark inside the tank, or one to two inches below the top of the overflow tube. For Korky’s internal-float valves, the mark should sit 1/2 inch below the top of the overflow tube.
What tools do I need? An adjustable wrench and a bucket. That’s the short list. Hand-tighten the mounting nut so you don’t crack the tank.
