Two Different Products That Share One Word

Here’s the confusion that costs people money. Walk into a building supply counter asking for a “leveler” and you might walk out with either of two products that have almost nothing in common. One is a liquid you pour. The other is a handful of plastic clips. Both say “level” on the label. They solve completely different problems at completely different stages of a tile job.

Get this straight before buying anything.

Self-leveling underlayment (SLU) is a cement- or calcium-aluminate-based compound you mix with water and pour onto a subfloor. It flows out, finds its own plane, and cures into a flat, hard surface — before a single tile goes down. Tile leveling systems are mechanical tools used during tile setting to prevent lippage, where the edges of adjacent tiles are at different heights. Clips and wedges. Used after the SLU is long cured, while you’re actually setting tile in thinset.

The thing nobody wants to hear: leveling systems cannot fix an uneven subfloor; trying to force a tile to bridge a large gap will result in hollow, unsupported spots prone to cracking. Clips pull adjacent tile edges flush with each other. They do nothing about a subfloor that dips an inch across the room. That’s the underlayment’s job.

Self-Leveling Underlayment: When You Need It and How to Choose

You need SLU when the subfloor isn’t flat enough for the tile you’re laying. Use it if your subfloor has dips, bumps, or slopes exceeding 2mm over 2 meters, especially for large-format tiles. Bigger tile telegraphs every flaw underneath it, so the larger your format, the less slop the substrate can hide.

The decisions that actually matter when picking an SLU: set speed, pour thickness, compressive strength, and what substrate you’re pouring over.

Set speed. This is the big practical difference between products. Regular-setting cement-based compounds take longer — a regular-setting, cement-based underlayment like Self-Leveler Plus is ready for ceramic tile or stone in 24 hours and ready for other types of floor coverings after 2 to 3 days. Calcium-aluminate rapid-set products move fast. LevelQuik RS is a calcium aluminate-based self-leveling underlayment that can be applied up to 1.5” thick in one pour and seeks its own level in minutes. The TEC Level Set fast-track products are walkable in 2-3 hours, with moisture sensitive floor covering installed in 15 hours and ceramic tile in 2-3 hours. On a job where you can’t afford the floor sitting overnight, that turnaround pays for itself.

Thickness. Each product has a single-pour range. Go thinner and you risk a weak film; go thicker neat and you’re past spec. Several products extend their range with aggregate.

Strength. Compressive strength tells you how the cured floor handles load. LevelQuik RS achieves greater than 4,300 psi compressive strength. Level Set 300 is a calcium aluminate-based underlayment with high compressive strength of 5,500 psi that can accept tile and stone applications in as little as 4 hours.

Substrate and joists. Most of these pour over concrete, existing tile, terrazzo, and wood. Wood subfloors usually want reinforcement. A fiber-reinforced product like NXT Level Plus levels interior plywood, OSB, gypsum and concrete substrates, with a rapid setting formula producing a hard surface for finishing flooring in as soon as 12 hours. Fiber reinforcement adds flexural strength, which matters over wood and on thicker pours. For residential framing, LevelQuik RS is rated for extra heavy use on concrete and wood subfloors with joists to 24” on center per ASTM C627.

Tile Leveling Systems and the Install Rules That Make or Break Either Product

Once the floor’s flat and cured, leveling clips handle lippage between tile edges as you set them. Common types include clip-and-wedge systems for general use, spin (screw-cap) systems for large tiles, and strap-and-cap systems. Clip-and-wedge is the workhorse — fast and economical. Spin caps are hand-tightened, friendly for DIY and big tiles, though you give up some fine tension control.

Using them right: place clips beneath the tiles as you set them, then insert wedges or caps to pull the tile edges flush. Use dedicated pliers for consistent pressure, place clips roughly 2 inches inward from corners to prevent weak spots, and break off the clips once the thinset is fully cured. Snap them early and you’ll shift tiles that haven’t grabbed yet.

For the underlayment, three install rules void the work if you skip them.

Prime first. Always. Smooth concrete surfaces, existing glazed tile, terrazzo, or polished stone may need to be roughened or scarified. A glassy surface won’t bond, and an unprimed porous slab flash-dries the compound.

Test moisture — SLU is not a vapor barrier. This one bites people on basement slabs. This product is not a moisture vapor barrier. If substrate moisture content exceeds the maximum allowed by the flooring manufacturer, then moisture mitigation must be applied prior to application. It will allow free passage of moisture vapor — test concrete relative humidity in accordance with ASTM F2170. Some products tolerate damp slabs: Level Set 400 HF can be installed over green concrete with RH of 99% or less. But that’s the slab’s RH — whatever flooring goes on top still has its own limit.

Honor every joint. All moving joints, including expansion joints and isolation joints, as well as all moving cracks, must be honored up through the entire flooring system. Under no circumstances should this product or any other component of the flooring system be installed over these. Pour across a moving crack and it telegraphs straight up through the tile. Create a minimum of 1/8” to 1/4” wide gap where the underlayment abuts walls, columns, and fixtures.

Temperature — the Montana catch

This matters on any unheated or shoulder-season job site here. These compounds need warmth to cure right. Substrate temperature should be a minimum of 43°F and air temperature maintained above 50°F. Other products set the floor higher — ambient, substrate and product temperature is to be between 50°F and 90°F. A cold slab in an unconditioned basement or a fall garage pour won’t cure to spec until you bring the space up to temperature and hold it there through the cure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a tile leveling system fix a subfloor that isn’t flat? No. Leveling systems cannot fix an uneven subfloor; trying to force a tile to bridge a large gap will result in hollow, unsupported spots prone to cracking. Clips only align the edges of neighboring tiles. A subfloor with real dips or slopes needs a self-leveling underlayment poured and cured first.

How thick can I pour self-leveling underlayment in one shot? It depends on the product. LevelQuik RS can be applied up to 1.5” thick in one pour. Level Set 300 can be applied up to 2” neat in single applications and up to 5” with proper aggregate. NXT Level Plus can be applied from 1/8” to 2” on concrete and 1/4” to 2” on wood. Do I have to prime before pouring? Yes. The bond fails without it. Smooth concrete surfaces, existing glazed tile, terrazzo, or polished stone may need to be roughened or scarified in addition to priming, because a slick surface gives the compound nothing to grip.

How soon can I set tile after pouring? With a fast calcium-aluminate product, fast. Level Set 300 can accept tile and stone applications in as little as 4 hours. ARDEX TL 1000 lets you install most tile or stone in just 6 hours. A regular-setting cement product takes longer — Self-Leveler Plus is ready for ceramic tile or stone in 24 hours.

Will self-leveling underlayment stop moisture from a damp basement slab? No. This product is not a vapor barrier and will allow free passage of moisture vapor. Test the slab’s relative humidity per ASTM F2170 and install a moisture mitigation system if the reading exceeds your flooring’s limit.

What’s the difference between clip-and-wedge and screw-cap leveling systems? Clip-and-wedge systems are common for general use; spin (screw-cap) systems suit large tiles. Wedge systems are fast and economical for floor work. Screw caps tighten by hand and are forgiving for DIY and big formats, with somewhat less precise tension control. Either way, use dedicated pliers for consistent pressure and break off the clips only once the thinset is fully cured.
