A stair tread is the horizontal board you step on going up or down a staircase. Treads are the things you actually put your feet on when walking on a set of stairs — typically thicker and often with a rounded “bullnose” front. The other half of the equation is the riser. Risers are the part between the treads. Unlike the treads, which sit horizontally, risers are attached vertically. They’re often a bit thinner — 3/4-inch to 1-inch thick, generally — and are rectangles. They do not have rounded edges.

Here’s the thing that makes treads worth knowing about: they’re sold by actual thickness. Everyone can go get a piece of lumber, distress it, stain it, and call it rustic, but the problem is the thickness. A typical 1” x board is actually only 0.75” thick. The secret: stair treads are 1” thick — not nominal, actual. That’s real, finished hardwood you can measure with a tape and trust. It’s also why treads have become a go-to for sturdy shelving, not just stairs.

Materials, Sizes, and Thickness

For interior work, species drives durability and looks. Instead of using knotty 2-by lumber or select wood planks, treads can be made out of oak. Oak stair treads have a smooth, finished appearance, less noticeable grain and knots, and oak is a more durable, hard wood. They’re an inch-plus thick. Treads are thick, heavy and usually made from solid oak or other dense hardwood. If you can get your hands on some of this seasoned hardwood, you can make something that will last for years.

Pine sits at the budget end — economical, good for paint-grade work. A bookshelf project can lean on 5/4-inch thick pine stair treads as the foundation material. Composite is another option when budget and speed matter more than heirloom quality. It’s the perfect thickness at 1 1/4” and already has a rounded edge — also the perfect width at 11”, though it won’t be built to last generations. Reclaimed treads bring density and character: crafted from old barns and buildings, these pieces showcase the dense, tight grain of aged lumber, offering strength and beauty that modern materials can’t replicate. Reclaimed stock runs 1.5” thick with lengths up to 12’.

Oak carries a quirk worth knowing. Oak stair treads have a slightly reddish hue. If you’re matching maple floors or want something more neutral, a very light layer of Weathered Oak stain applied with a rag helps tone down the red tremendously.

Common dimensions land in a predictable range. Tread boards are usually thick, typically ranging from 1 to 2 inches in thickness. Width tends to run around 11 to 11.5 inches, and 36” – 48” stair treads are the common retail lengths. Thickness is your structural decision. One inch is standard when you’re retrofitting over an existing substrate. For open-riser or floating stairs, step up to 1.5 to 3 inches to prevent flex underfoot. And before you commit, check your local building codes on riser heights and minimum tread depths, which typically run around 10 inches.

Treads as Shelving and Furniture

A huge share of buyers aren’t building stairs at all — they’re after sturdy shelves. The reason is simple. Particle board can sag over time, and the cardboard back is nothing you want to live with. Stair treads, by contrast, are solid wood.

Load capacity is real. This type of installation, done right, can support over 75 lbs on a typical 9-inch-wide stair tread 36 inches in length supported by two corbels. You will rarely get that much weight on a single shelf. For mounting, the rule is straightforward. You can install shelves anywhere you can screw into wall studs. Treads are rarely longer than about 36 inches. If you can get screws into at least two studs evenly spaced or near both ends, it will support the shelf. Most interior studs are spaced at 16 inches, so you can almost always hit two of them.

On heavier loads, keep your spans tight. A kitchen install piling heavy plates and glassware should run 3 brackets per shelf, never a span more than 18” apart — a safe bet.

The bullnose is your choice to make. You can rip off the bullnose with a table saw. Brackets accommodate a shelving depth of 11 1/4”, and stair treads run 11 1/2” — taking 1/4” off the bullnose gives a pretty square edge. Or keep it for a finished front. Either way, sand before you finish: start with rough 80 grit, then move up to 120 grit and finally 220 grit. The higher the number, the more fine the grit and the smoother your surface.

Installation and Finishing

Stairs are rarely perfectly square, so measure every tread on its own. Dry-fit before any permanent adhesive goes down. For a retrofit over an existing substrate, run a continuous bead of construction adhesive and secure with finish nails hidden by the riser. On new builds, glue and screw from underneath the stringer so the walking surface stays fastener-free.

Finishing is what extends the lifespan and seals out moisture. For shelving, apply 3 coats of water-based polyurethane with a paintbrush to protect the wood. Between each coat, give the previous coat a light sanding with a 220 grit sanding block. On painted pieces, priming and painting creates a barrier against humidity and extends the lifespan. That moisture barrier matters in homes that swing from humid summers to bone-dry winter heating — solid hardwood already handles those shifts far better than particleboard, which sags and degrades.
