How to Pick the Right Grade and Bond
Building MaterialsTwo panels. Two different jobs. Get the choice wrong and you’re either watching a painted door telegraph wood grain or pulling a swollen, ruined sheet off a porch ceiling come spring.

Here’s the plain version. Sanded plywood is a structural panel with face and back plies sanded smooth in manufacturing, built from three or more cross-laminated layers of wood veneer. MDF is a different animal entirely — compressed wood fibers and resin pressed into a flat, void-free, grain-free sheet. Plywood carries load and holds screws. MDF takes paint and routs clean. That’s the whole trade-off in one sentence.
For load-bearing spans — flooring, shelving, anything that has to carry weight — reach for plywood. Cross-laminated veneer bonded under heat and pressure gives plywood superior dimensional stability, an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and high resistance to impacts, chemicals, and changes in temperature and humidity. For painted cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and intricate router profiles, MDF’s dead-flat face wins. But MDF swells irreversibly the moment it drinks water, and its edges don’t grip screws well. Seal it. Pilot it. Keep it dry.
This is where most buyers go wrong, and it’s printed right on the panel.
Most sanded plywood grades are identified by the veneer grade used on the face and back — A-C, B-D, and so on. Face listed first, back second. Veneer grades in descending order of quality are A, B, C-Plugged, C, and D. A is smooth with no open defects. D has open knots and splits — hidden use only. Sanded plywood carries B-grade or better veneer on one or both sides.
Then there’s bond class, and this one matters more in Montana than anywhere. Two classifications: Exterior and Exposure 1. Exterior panels are suitable for repeated wetting and redrying or long-term exposure to weather. Exposure 1 panels are suitable for uses not permanently exposed to weather — they’re built to resist moisture that shows up from construction delays. The catch most people miss: Exposure 1 panels use the same adhesives as Exterior panels, but because other factors affect glueline performance, only Exterior panels should be used for permanent weather exposure.
Here’s the trap. CDX — APA Rated Sheathing Exposure 1 — is sometimes mistaken as an Exterior plywood and used where it doesn’t belong. CDX is made with a C grade face and a D grade back, and D grade veneers are not suitable for Exterior applications. In wet, freeze-thaw country, on soffits, porch ceilings, or anything seeing repeated wetting and redrying, you specify Exterior-rated. For sheathing panels exposed long-term to weather, specify APA Rated Sheathing Exterior — C-C Exterior plywood under PS 1.
One more thing worth checking. Look for the APA trademark — it signifies panel quality is subject to verification through APA audit, designed to assure manufacture in conformance with performance standards. Panels with B-grade or better veneer on both sides usually carry the trademark on the panel edge; otherwise it’s stamped on the back.
The sanded grades each have a clear best use. Match type to application and you save money without giving up finish quality.

AC is the premium one-good-face panel. AC Radiata Pine has an A-grade sanded face over C-grade cores and back; Radiata is a plantation pine that naturally has very few knots, used for cabinets, shelving, furniture, and anywhere the highest quality face with no defects is needed. If you’re painting, this is the one. Radiata tends to be the best surface for painting — it evenly soaks up paint and leaves a flat, even finish.
BC saves a little money for a still-clean face. BC Pine has a B-grade sanded face, C-grade cores and back, and exterior glue, with a repaired face that’s had knots and defects removed. You may see a few small pencil-sized knots. Figure roughly 5-10% less than AC.
AC Fir runs stronger and stiffer. AC Fir is an A-grade face over a C-grade back — used for cabinets, soffits, furniture, and countertops — with imperfections and knots removed and replaced with boat patches. About those patches: a boat patch, or football patch, is a football-shaped patch inserted into the veneer when a knot is removed. They’re clear, undetectable when painted, but when stained the difference in grain can be seen. Translation — paint hides them, stain shows them.
For underlayment, the touch-sanded grades earn their keep. AC and BC panels offer a fully-sanded face; CCPTS panels have a touch-sanded face and provide a tighter thickness tolerance. That tolerance matters under finish flooring. Western Building Center’s underlayment runs from 1/4 through 3/4 in 4x8 sheets, plus a 3/4 tongue-and-groove underlayment option.
Marine grade is the water fighter. Marine plywood is water-resistant, made with Douglas Fir veneers for structural strength, with Marine A and B faces, fully wood patched. AB Marine is stocked in 1/2 and 3/4 4x8.
And for signage or anything needing a glass-smooth painted surface, there’s MDO. Overlaid plywood panels carry a face enhancement — a Medium Density Overlay is a resin-impregnated fiber surface bonded under heat and pressure. WBC carries 3/4 4x8 MDO signboard in both one-side (G1S) and two-side (G2S).
Standard sizes are straightforward. Panels come in 4x8, 4x9, and 4x10 feet, with common thicknesses running 5/16, 3/8, 15/32, 1/2, 19/32, 5/8, 23/32, 3/4, 7/8, 1, and 1-1/8. The AC Radiata that Western Building Center stocks covers 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4 in 4x8, plus a 1/4 4x4 — and there’s a 1-1/8 4x8 tongue-and-groove (2-4-1) for heavy floor work.
One labeling note that trips people up. Compliance with Weights and Measures standards led to the designation of Performance Category in place of nominal thickness — a panel formerly called 3/8-inch is now Performance Category 3/8. The change has no impact on design values, use recommendations, or manufacturing requirements. Same panel. New name on the stamp.
On install — use plywood, not MDF, for load-bearing spans, or you’ll be looking at sag down the road. Plywood takes edge screws fine; MDF needs pilot holes or it splits. And seal your edges. Like all plywood, raw edges absorb moisture quickly, so seal exposed edges. A few finishing habits worth keeping: prime before painting, use fine-tooth blades to reduce tear-out, sand the thin face veneer lightly, and store panels flat to prevent bowing.
What’s the real difference between plywood and MDF? Plywood is cross-laminated wood veneer built for strength, stiffness, and screw-holding. MDF is compressed fiber and resin pressed into a flat, grain-free panel that takes paint beautifully and routs clean. Use plywood where loads and fasteners matter — flooring, shelving. Use MDF for painted doors and intricate profiles. MDF swells permanently if it gets wet, so seal it and keep it dry.
Is CDX the same as exterior plywood? No, and it’s a common and costly mistake. CDX is made with a C grade veneer on the face and a D grade veneer on the back, and D grade veneers are not suitable for Exterior applications. For sheathing exposed long-term to weather, specify APA Rated Sheathing Exterior — C-C Exterior plywood under PS 1.
Which panel paints best? AC Radiata. Radiata tends to be the best surface for painting — it evenly soaks up paint and leaves a flat and even finish. The boat patches on AC grades disappear under paint, though when stained the difference in grain can be seen.
Will I see knots on a sanded face? Depends on the grade. With BC Yellow Pine you may see a few small pencil-sized knots; with AC Fir and Radiata, any knots are removed and repaired with a boat patch.
What does Exposure 1 actually protect against? Construction moisture, not permanent weather. Exposure 1 panels are suitable for uses not permanently exposed to weather, intended to resist moisture effects from construction delays or similar conditions. For anything seeing repeated wetting and redrying — soffits, porch ceilings — go Exterior-rated instead.
Why are panel thicknesses now labeled “Category”? A Weights and Measures compliance push led to Performance Category replacing nominal thickness — a 3/8-inch panel is now Performance Category 3/8 — with no change to design values, use recommendations, or manufacturing requirements.
