How to Pick the Right One
Building MaterialsCorrugated S&D fittings are the adapters, caps, and couplings that tie flexible single-wall corrugated pipe into rigid sewer-and-drain pipe in gravity drainage. They’re not pipe. They’re the transition pieces. Corrugated fittings include adapters, caps, and couplings. They connect to single-wall corrugated pipe, are made of high-density polyethylene treated with UV inhibitors, meet applicable ASTM standards, and are used in non-pressurized sewer and drain applications.
Here’s the thing every contractor and serious DIY builder needs to hear first: the fitting is the easy part. The decision that actually determines whether your drainage run lasts ten years or fifty is which pipe you run it with. More on that below. But for the joints themselves, the rules are simple.
Three pieces do all the work. The corrugated adapter connects two different pipe types, available in 3, 4, and 6 in. sizes, and connects to equivalent size sewer & drain pipe or slotted pipe in the EZflow French drain. Corrugated caps seal the end of single-wall corrugated pipe to stop the flow of water, available in 3, 4, and 6 in. sizes. Corrugated couplings connect two lengths of single-wall corrugated pipe and also connect to slotted pipe in the EZflow French drain.
What keeps the joint tight isn’t glue. The adapter connects single-wall corrugated pipe to sewer and drain pipe or fitting in non-pressurized drainage and sewer piping systems, with internal tabs that lock the corrugated drain pipe into place. That mechanical lock is the whole game here. Push it in, the tabs grab, done.
Two ways to get this wrong: pick the wrong diameter, or try to use these in an application they were never built for. The second one bites people.
These are gravity-flow only. For use in non-pressurized underground sewer and drainage applications, with a maximum working pressure of 5 PSI. Not for use in pressurized water systems. If your application isn’t true gravity drainage, these aren’t your fitting. For spring runoff diversion around a foundation, confirm you’re moving water downhill, not pushing it.
The other trap is pipe compatibility. The corrugated adapter is molded of polyethylene and fits SDR-35, SDR-26, triple wall, and ASTM D-2729 pipe, plus single-wall corrugated pipe, using a spigot-to-hub connection — but it does not fit Schedule 40 pipe. That last point matters. If you’re transitioning off DWV or Schedule 40, you need a different adapter entirely. NDS makes a separate DWV/SCH40 to S&D adapter line for that transition — parts like the 2P41 bushing, the 3P15 adapter, and the 3P16 adapter — made of PVC with UV inhibitors.

Adapter dimensions for spec’ing your hub fit: the 351 has a hub inside diameter of 3.75 in., the 451 a hub inside diameter of 4.82 in., and the 651 a hub inside diameter of 7.10 in.
Western Building Center carries the 4-inch corrugated drainage components most jobs actually use — a corrugated pipe cap (435782), a slip coupling (405626), a tee (405635), a 90-degree elbow (405519), and downspout adapters that step 4-inch corrugated down to 2x3 and 3x4 downspouts (405724 and 418706).
This is the question people wrestle with at the counter, and it’s the right one to wrestle with. The fitting bolts either pipe together. The pipe choice decides longevity.
Corrugated HDPE works for low-stakes, short-run drainage or landscaping where cost-efficiency is the priority. Flexible, bends around obstacles, cheap. Fine for downspout tie-ins and yard drainage.
But for anything you’re going to backfill and forget — a foundation perimeter drain in particular — think hard. For critical infrastructure such as foundation perimeter drains, smooth-wall PVC is preferred for its longevity and resistance to sediment buildup. The ribs that make corrugated pipe flexible also catch sediment and slow flow over time. In Montana’s wet spring melt, with saturated clay soils and seasonal high water tables, that’s exactly the condition where a clogged or crushed line backs up against your foundation.
The pipe design types are worth knowing. Corrugated HDPE is categorized by design: Type C is corrugated inside and out for general drainage, while Type S and Type D feature smooth inner liners for improved flow. A smooth inner liner moves water faster and holds less sediment than fully corrugated pipe.
Whatever you run, match your fittings to it. Always use fittings and gaskets compatible with the pipe to ensure system integrity.
A fitting only performs if the bed and slope underneath it are right. Get these wrong and the best joint in the world won’t save the run.
Slope first. The standard is a minimum 1 percent grade — an inch of drop per eight feet. Cut that and you cut your capacity, letting sediment settle where you don’t want it.
Bedding next. Bedding requires at least 6 inches of granular material below the pipe, with backfill extending 50 percent up the pipe’s vertical diameter. That granular base keeps the pipe supported and drains the bedding zone itself.
Installation should follow ASTM D2321. For smaller pipe under 18 inches, hand-moving is possible, but larger pipe requires equipment with slings to prevent deformation. Corrugated pipe deforms easier than you’d think when it’s being dragged or dropped — handle it like it matters.
Can I use these fittings on a pressurized line? No. These are not for use in pressurized water systems — the maximum is 5 PSI, for non-pressurized underground sewer and drainage only. They’re built for gravity flow.
Will a corrugated adapter fit Schedule 40 pipe? No. The corrugated adapter fits SDR-35, SDR-26, triple wall, ASTM D-2729, and single-wall corrugated pipe — it does not fit Schedule 40. For a DWV or Schedule 40 transition, you need the separate PVC DWV/SCH40-to-S&D adapter line.
What holds the corrugated pipe in the fitting? Internal tabs. The fitting uses internal tabs that lock the corrugated drain pipe into place. It’s a mechanical connection, not solvent-welded.
What sizes do corrugated fittings come in? Adapters, caps, and couplings all come in 3, 4, and 6 in. sizes. Four-inch is the workhorse for most residential drainage.
Are these fittings any good for a foundation drain? They’ll connect the pipe fine. The better question is the pipe. For critical infrastructure like foundation perimeter drains, smooth-wall PVC is preferred for longevity and resistance to sediment buildup. Save the corrugated for shorter, lower-stakes runs.
