How to Size, Choose, and Install the Right One

A sump pump is a mechanical system installed in a pit to remove groundwater or seepage from a basement or crawl space, preventing flooding. In Montana, that job matters most in spring, when snowmelt and a rising water table push water toward the lowest point in your foundation. Get the sizing right and the pump runs for years. Get it wrong and you’re back at the counter sooner than you’d like.

The single most useful thing to understand: bigger is not better. A pump matched to your actual water inflow beats an oversized unit that short-cycles itself to death. Most homes need less pump than they think.

Submersible vs. Pedestal, and Getting the Size Right

Two body styles cover residential work. Submersible pumps sit down in the pit. They run quieter, stay protected, and handle more water — the right choice for most homes. Pedestal pumps mount the motor up on a shaft above the pit. Louder, but the motor never gets wet, and they fit narrow or older pits where serviceability is the priority.

Now the part people get wrong. Horsepower:

1/3 HP is the standard for most homes. Move to 1/2 HP for high water tables, deep basements, or frequent cycling. Use 3/4 HP or 1 HP only for severe water intrusion or large, flood-prone areas.

Spec it by measuring, not guessing. Calculate the required capacity by measuring water inflow during a heavy rain and selecting a pump rated for 1.5x to 2x that volume at 10 feet of head pressure. That last phrase is the catch. Read the flow rate at 10 feet of lift — not the advertised maximum, which is measured at zero head and means nothing for a real basement.

The stock list here runs the practical range. A 1/3 HP stainless unit covers the typical home. There’s a 1/4 HP for light duty, a 1/2 HP for the harder cases, and a 3/4 HP for serious intrusion. Match the number to your measured inflow, not your worst-case anxiety.

The pit dictates what fits. A pre-plumbed Flotec unit lists a minimum sump size of 10” in diameter and 10” deep. Bigger is much better. For a brand-new install, size up. Zoeller’s preassembled 900-Series, for reference, ships in an 18” x 22” basin with a 4” inlet. A roomier pit means the pump cycles less and lasts longer — and leaves room for a backup alongside the primary.

The Accessories That Keep It Running

A pump rarely works alone. The supporting parts are what stop backflow, silent failure, and a flooded basement during the storm that knocks out your power.

Check valve. A check valve, also known as a non-return or one-way valve, is used to prevent the backflow of water from the discharge pipe back into the sump pit. Its primary function is to ensure water flows in one direction, from the pump to the outlet, while preventing reverse flow. Without it, water in the discharge line drains right back down every time the pump shuts off — making it cycle again. Common types include 1-1/2” threaded and silent check valves. The stock list carries check valves, a check valve kit, and a discharge hose kit.

Float switch. This is the brain. The float switch controls the pump’s operation automatically. It consists of a buoyant float attached to a lever arm. As the water level rises, the float rises, triggering the switch to activate the pump. When the water drops, the float descends, turning off the pump. The float switch ensures efficient water level management and protects against dry running, preventing motor damage. For tight pits, the vertical float switch is designed for use in limited working spaces and lower water levels — which is why pits under 15 inches steer you toward vertical floats only.

Battery backup. In Montana this isn’t optional thinking. The storms that flood basements are the same ones that drop the grid. A backup keeps the pump running when the power’s out. Pentair’s lineup, for example, includes a sump pump battery backup as a companion product.

Alarms and monitoring. A high-water alarm tells you the pump fell behind before the water tells you. Smarter controllers go further — Pentair’s sump controller operates your sump pump even when the float switch fails, helping to minimize flooding, with a high water alarm through a secondary float switch and pump condition detection that alerts you to abnormal conditions.

Basins and covers. A sealed, bolted cover matters in radon country, which covers most of western Montana. Zoeller’s Deluxe configuration uses a radon-approved basin and cover for radon prevention, while the Standard model uses a polyethylene basin and cover. Basins, covers, grommets, cord kits, and hose kits round out a complete system.

Installation: Replacement vs. New Pit

Know which job you’re facing before you start.

Replacing an existing pump is straightforward. Pull the old one, drop in the new, reconnect the discharge, swap the check valve. Pre-plumbed kits make it nearly toolless — the Flotec Easy Sump normally requires only a screwdriver and hacksaw to get installed. No power tools or specialty tools are required. Since it plugs directly into a standard 115v outlet, in most cases there is no electrical work required. The basic sequence: remove your old pump, drop in the new unit making sure the vertical float switch can operate freely, run the cords through the cover, and connect the check valve to the existing discharge pipe.

Electrical comes first. Plug the pump directly into a grounded outlet that is serviced by its own circuit breaker. The unit runs on a standard household 15-amp outlet, and the circuit should be dedicated to the sump pump exclusively. GFCI protection is required — a properly grounded receptacle of grounding type shall be installed and protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter in accordance with National Electrical Code and local codes.

Skip the extension cord. The manufacturer is blunt: they strongly recommend you do not. Plug the pump directly into a grounded outlet on its own breaker. If you don’t have a good outlet close enough to the pit, have a qualified electrician install one.

Discharge routing. Run the line well away from the foundation so the water you just pumped out doesn’t seep right back in. For a fresh install you’ll also need enough PVC pipe to reach from the pump’s discharge up to the wall, an elbow, and enough pipe or hose to run outside to the discharge point — plus the tools to create and seal a hole through the wall if one doesn’t exist. And consult your local building codes to verify how they require a sump discharge to be set up.

A brand-new pit is a different animal. Cutting through a concrete floor and routing fresh discharge is contractor-level work, not a Saturday afternoon. If you’re starting from scratch, plan accordingly.
