The heaviest lock on the rack isn’t automatically the right one. A padlock that looks heavy is not always a padlock that performs well. The real question is not just how strong the lock is — it is how well that lock matches the opening, exposure, attack risk, and day-to-day use of what you’re trying to secure. Then match the lock to the hasp it’s hanging on, and pick a finish that survives a wet, freeze-thaw winter. Get those three things right and you’ve done better than most.

Know the Parts and the Shackle Styles

Every padlock comes down to three pieces. The body is the main part that contains the locking mechanism. The shackle is commonly the U-shaped part — though some designs use straight shackles — and it’s the part released using a key or numeric combination. The lock mechanism sits inside the body and can be a pin tumbler, lever tumbler, or disc tumbler.

Shackle style is where most buyers go wrong. There are five distinctive types: open shackle, long shackle, closed shackle, straight shackle, and shrouded shackle. The difference is how much metal a thief can get a tool around. When your padlock is clicked into the hasp, the more of that curved bar that’s exposed, the easier it is to attack with bolt croppers. A closed shackle padlock solves this neatly — the bar sits recessed into the padlock body, so there’s very little to grip.

Discus locks do the same thing a different way. For storage units and outdoor sheds, you want a discus lock or a lock with a hidden shackle. These designs make it almost impossible for someone to use bolt cutters. Heavy locks often have shrouded shackles, meaning the body of the lock grows up around the metal loop. It leaves very little of the shackle showing. If a thief can’t see the shackle, they can’t cut it.

Then there’s how you open it. Padlocks come in keyed-alike and keyed-to-differ options, and there’s also the combination padlock that doesn’t require a key. Combination padlocks use a sequence of numbers or letters, eliminating the need for keys, and are favored for environments like school lockers, athletic bags, and shared access locations where managing keys can be problematic. For bikes and bundled gear, cable locks combine a flexible cable with a locking mechanism, suitable for securing bicycles, sporting goods, and other items needing extended reach.

Material, Thickness, and Weather — What Actually Lasts Here

Material tells you two things at once: how it handles a cutting attack, and how it handles November. Hardened steel shackles are much tougher to cut than regular steel. That toughness comes from heat treatments that make the outside hard but leave the inside flexible, so the shackle won’t snap if it’s hit. Boron shackles stand up to bolt cutters even better than hardened steel, which is why security experts often recommend them for outdoor areas where someone might try to cut through.

Bodies break down by job. Brass bodies resist rust and corrosion on their own, so they don’t need a coating that might wear away. But brass is softer than steel, so it’s not the best choice if someone might try to force the lock open — though for damp, humid settings it offers dependable performance. Laminated steel bodies are built by stacking layers of steel plates, creating a lock that shrugs off drilling, cutting, and heavy hits. Solid steel bodies typically offer strong resistance to physical attack.

Don’t go thin on the shackle. Shackles should be at least 10mm thick; 12mm to 16mm is preferred for high-risk sites.

Now the part that matters most for a lock living on a gate or shed out here. Outdoor locks need either a weather-resistant coating or a corrosion-resistant body material. Some manufacturers add rubber bumpers or protective covers to keep moisture out of the keyway, reducing the risk of internal corrosion that can freeze a lock cylinder and render it unusable. That freeze-up is the real enemy through a Montana winter — a lock can be strong on paper and still become a problem if it seizes up every winter. Rain, snow, and dirt can ruin a cheap lock in just a few weeks. These better locks often have covers over the keyhole to keep water out.

For gates and outbuildings exposed to the weather, look for stainless steel or brass — these metals don’t rust as fast as regular steel. Some padlocks are wrapped in a rubber shell, which protects the body and stops it from scratching the paint on your gate. Trailers and mobile equipment get their own consideration: for vans, trailers, and mobile equipment, corrosion resistance and vibration tolerance are essential. Road exposure is hard on hardware, and a padlock that performs consistently in wet and dirty conditions may be a better choice than a heavier lock that’s more vulnerable to sticking.

Match the Lock to the Hasp — The Whole System Counts

This is the mistake that wastes money. A great lock bolted to a flimsy hasp isn’t secure — if the gate hardware is weak, the lock alone will not solve the problem. A strong padlock on a thin, poorly mounted latch only shifts the attack point. If your latch screws can be backed out, or the chain is lighter than the lock, the system is only as strong as its weakest part.

And before you buy, measure. The diameter of the chain link, anchor, or staple the padlock attaches to should be measured, and you must ensure the padlock dimensions will work. The dimensions to consider are shackle diameter, horizontal shackle clearance, vertical shackle clearance, and body width.

Fit the hasp right or none of it counts. For sheds and garages, look for a hasp that hides its fixing screws when closed. Exposed screws are an open invitation — they can be removed in minutes with the right tool — and a hasp that covers them when locked is a much tougher proposition. Go for hardened or solid steel, and if the frame is timber, use coach bolts that pass right through the door rather than standard screws. A bolt secured with a nut on the inside is very hard to remove from the outside.

Different jobs, different locks. Most lockers work best with a medium-sized lock with a shackle diameter of about 1/4 inch. Drawer latches are often thin and fragile, so a slim shackle lock is the right tool — these have a thin loop that slides through small holes with ease. For storage units, a cylinder lock or heavy disc lock is usually the best choice. These are thick and made of hardened steel.

Security Ratings and Keying Plans

If you want a number to compare against, the testing standards give you one. In the USA, padlock security is commonly measured using ASTM or UL standards. UL 437 is a widely recognized standard that tests padlocks for resistance to picking, drilling, and other forms of forced entry, and choosing padlocks that meet or exceed UL 437 or relevant ASTM standards ensures a higher level of security. Standards from organizations like ANSI/BHMA also set minimum performance benchmarks, and a lock rated at a higher grade has passed tests a lower-rated product hasn’t.

If you’re running more than one lock, plan the keying before you buy. If one person uses one padlock on one gate, keyed different may be perfectly fine. If you’re managing several locks around a property, keyed alike makes life much easier. For businesses, rekeyable padlocks often make more sense because staff changes are a fact of life. Master keying systems let a single key open multiple locks while each lock still uses its own individual key. That last point gets overlooked until it bites: high security is also about maintaining control over who has access over time. A cheaper lock can become expensive quickly if replacing it is your only option every time a key goes missing.

What’s the single most common padlock mistake? Buying for size alone. One common mistake is buying for maximum size without checking clearances. If the shackle is too thick or the body interferes with the hasp, the lock will not seat properly.
