Building MaterialsA nut is an internally threaded fastener that runs onto a bolt or threaded rod to clamp two or more parts together. A hex nut is a six-sided internally threaded fastener used with a bolt, screw, or stud to create clamp load in a bolted joint, and the correct one gets selected by thread standard, pitch, property class, material, coating, corrosion environment, preload requirement, and bolt compatibility. Here’s the part too many people skip: the nut doesn’t hold the joint by itself. It works with the bolt to stretch the bolt slightly and generate preload, and that preload clamps the parts together. If the nut grade, thread pitch, bearing surface, coating, or lubrication condition is wrong, the joint may loosen, strip, seize, crack, or fail under vibration. So the buying decision comes down to three things — match the bolt, match the load, match the environment.
The single most expensive mistake on a job site: grabbing a nut that’s under-spec for the bolt it’s going on. Mismatching bolt and nut grades is a classic error — a Grade 8 bolt with a Grade 2 nut will fail at the nut. Always match grades. The nut has to meet or exceed the strength of the bolt, or it becomes the weak link in an otherwise good connection.
Three dimensions have to line up: diameter, thread pitch, and strength grade. A hex nut must support the intended bolt preload without thread stripping, proof load failure, or permanent deformation — a nut selected only by diameter can fit the bolt and still be mechanically wrong.
On the imperial side, Western Building Center stocks hex nuts in two grades worth knowing. Grade 2 hex nuts cover general assembly from 1/4-20 up through 1-8 coarse thread. Grade 8 hex nuts — the higher-strength option — run from 1/4-20 through 3/4-10. Pull a Grade 8 nut when the bolt is Grade 8 and the load is real.
For structural work, the relevant standard is specific. ASTM A563/A563M covers chemical and mechanical requirements for carbon and alloy steel nuts used on bolts, studs, and other externally threaded parts for structural and mechanical applications, including hardness, proof load, chemistry, and mechanical properties. For high-strength structural bolts, go with heavy hex nuts — they provide better bearing surfaces and improved load distribution.
Working in metric? Match the bolt diameter, thread pitch, and strength grade. Property classes run Class 5 and 6 for lighter work, Class 8 to pair with 8.8 bolts, and Class 10 to pair with 10.9 bolts.
And the final word on grade selection for permitted work: a structural engineer specifies fastener grades on permitted work. Follow the spec sheet, not the bin.

This is where a lot of joints quietly fail over a few winters. Coating isn’t a preference — it’s a longevity and code issue.

The rule that matters most on a deck or fence here: standard zinc-plated fasteners corrode rapidly in contact with modern pressure-treated (ACQ/CA) lumber. Always use hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel for deck framing, fence posts, and any structural connection to treated wood — both a longevity and building-code requirement in most jurisdictions. Montana decks already eat fasteners through freeze-thaw cycling. Pair that with treated lumber and a zinc nut, and you’ve built in a failure point.
One install note on galvanized nuts: when hot-dip galvanizing is required, the nut may need oversize tapping to allow proper thread fit after zinc coating — this directly affects whether the nut can run freely on the mating bolt at the job site. If an HDG nut binds halfway down, that’s why.
Standard hex nuts back off over time anywhere there’s movement or repeated temperature swing. A standard hex nut can loosen over time when subjected to vibration, thermal cycling, or dynamic loading. Montana’s wide temperature range is exactly that kind of cycling on outdoor connections.
