A Buyer's Guide to Grades, Sizes, and Where It Works
Building MaterialsHemlock is a softwood. Despite getting filed under hardwoods in some catalogs, it’s commonly used in framing, millwork, trim, and general construction. The single most important thing to understand before buying: it’s not rot-resistant, so keep it indoors where its clean, uniform look can shine in trim and molding. Get that right, and hemlock earns its keep as an affordable, stable, paint-friendly wood for interior work.
Two varieties dominate the commercial market. The two primary species harvested for lumber in North America are Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla). Eastern hemlock is found primarily in the eastern United States and Canada, while Western hemlock dominates the Pacific Northwest. A third type, Mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana), sees far less harvest. For Montana builders, Western hemlock is the regionally familiar one — it grows the moist coastal ranges and climbs into the interior mountains.
Which one to buy comes down to the job. Choose Western hemlock for high-quality millwork, as it is generally harder, stronger, and more readily available in clear, knot-free grades. Use Eastern hemlock for utility or structural framing.
Western hemlock wins on strength and hardness. The gap isn’t huge, but it matters for visible work and load-bearing framing.

Both varieties share the same look and the same weakness. Heartwood is light reddish brown. Sapwood may be slightly lighter in color but usually isn’t distinguished from the heartwood. The light color typically ranges from creamy white to light brown, often with subtle reddish or purplish streaks. The grain is generally straight and even. Unlike some other softwoods, hemlock lacks prominent resin canals, resulting in a cleaner, less sticky surface. That resin-free character is the secret to its finishing behavior. It’s pitch and resin free, which eliminates blotching and bleeding through finished surfaces.
You’ll often see it stamped under a species group rather than by name. Western hemlock is commonly grouped together with other species of fir and hemlock and sold under the more generic label “HEM-FIR.” The Hem-Fir group also includes California red fir, grand fir, noble fir, Pacific silver fir, and white fir.
Hemlock is graded like all lumber. The grade reflects the quality of the wood and the presence of defects like knots, wane, and splits. Common grades include Select — the highest grade, with minimal defects and a clean appearance, ideal for projects where aesthetics are important; #1 Common, which contains some knots and minor defects but is still suitable for a wide range of applications; #2 Common, which contains more significant defects and is typically used for utility purposes; and Stud Grade, specifically intended for framing and structural applications.

Beyond clear trim stock, hemlock shows up as dimensional lumber. Hemlock is a strong, straight-grained softwood that’s often used for utility lumber and framing. It’s prone to “ring shake” (the grain separating), so inspect your boards carefully before you start a project. That’s the big one at the yard. Sold as dimensional lumber, studs, and trim stock — look for straight, dry boards with minimal knots, and watch out for twist, knots, and splintery edges.
Moisture content depends on what you’re buying. For construction lumber applications, hemlock can be dried quite rapidly, and the moisture content is left relatively high, in the low 20 percent range. For appearance applications, such as furniture or cabinets, hemlock needs to be dried slower, longer, and be conditioned as well. For visible work, insist on kiln-dried, clear boards. Skip twisted studs unless the job is purely structural.
The sweet spot is interior, structural and finish both.
Interior framing. Hemlock is a popular choice for interior framing due to its affordability, workability, and stability. It’s well-suited for studs, joists, and rafters in residential construction. In a climate with big seasonal swings, that stability matters — it’s a very stable wood with less twisting and shrinkage, and it typically does 80% of its checking in the first year.
Sheathing and subfloor. Hemlock can also be used for sheathing and subflooring, providing a solid base for siding and flooring materials. It provides a smooth surface and good nail holding for siding and flooring substrates.
Trim and millwork. Hemlock’s light color and even grain make it a good choice for interior trim and molding. It can be easily painted or stained to match any décor. Properties that make Western hemlock a popular choice include the wood’s light color, lack of pitch, and its ability to take a varnish finish well. It also handles doors, windows, paneling, staircases, and spindles, and is growing in popularity for architectural millwork.
Saunas. The resin-free, heat-stable nature pays off here — a real benefit for cold-climate Montana homes wanting an indoor amenity. It’s growing in popularity for saunas.
On price, hemlock competes well. It is priced less than Northern White Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. It’s generally less expensive than many other softwoods, making it a budget-friendly option for large projects.
The no-go zone is anything wet or exposed. Hemlock is not naturally decay-resistant and is susceptible to insect attack. It’s not a good choice for outdoor projects or areas exposed to moisture unless properly treated. In Montana’s freeze-thaw climate, that’s non-negotiable — keep it indoors or get it preservative-treated before it goes near ground contact. And don’t over-ask it structurally: hemlock is not as strong as Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine, so it’s not suitable for heavy-duty structural applications.
It cuts and fastens cleanly when you respect a few habits. Hemlock is relatively easy to cut, shape, and fasten. It takes nails and screws well and can be glued without difficulty. The main thing to manage is splintering. Hemlock can be prone to splintering, especially when working with dry lumber. Western hemlock works well with both machine and hand tools, and experts recommend the use of sharp tools for clean, smooth finishes. Pre-drill near edges and keep your passes light on cross-grain cuts.
Finishing has one quirk worth knowing. Because of the disparity between the soft earlywood and the hard latewood, sanding can create dips and uneven surfaces. It glues, stains, and finishes well. Blotch risk runs medium, so a pre-stain conditioner or sanding sealer evens out the tone before color goes on. For surface prep, work through 120-150-180 grit; for paint-grade trim, taking it to 180–220 leaves it ready.
